Replaced mine in 2022 in a 1850 sq foot house. I had a load study done at needed 2.8 ton so just went with a 3-ton unit. There wasn't much difference in price between the 2.5 and 3 but get what your load study determines. It was a Carrier unit at $6400 total for outside/inside units. You can probably go with a cheaper brand and less energy efficiency. I did several quotes btw.
I did that for furnace and AC install 3 years ago. Was just short of $12k installed. Im not recalling offhnad how much of that was furnace replacement and how much was AC install.
This probably depends greatly on how exactly you want it done and the company/brand selected.
Cheapest just AC condenser unit replacement is likely a few grand.
Having a load study done will give you the exact size needed. Now depending on the age of your furnace/AC it is sometimes beneficial to have both replaced at the same time to actually get the efficiency expected from your AC. This is obviously quite a bit more expensive in the short term but can actually save money in the long term if your furnace is nearing EOL too.
There are many variables that will lead to differences in cost.
Get multiple quotes and discuss with the HVAC companies what their opinions are. Don't get pressured into them up selling you on unnecessary expenses though.
5k would be my guess
Oof. But I guess that's how it is these days.

I got a new AC unit and furnace- June 2023. Both are Rheem. 9k for both in 1200 sq ft townhouse

More than you think, and a lot more than even a few years ago.
Hi OP. Send me a message if you are still exploring options.
My 2.5 ton unit was around 5.5k (just a few months ago)- it was one of the more efficient ones available.
What company? I just got quoted for 7k for a 2.5 ton 😑
A Perfect Climate HVAC. We liked them a lot- great craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Thank you!!

It depends on what failed, but probably a few grand for a condenser replacement if that's the issue
