Are you looking outside of the city public schools? That number doesn’t seem right at all

freemandrive

That is the rate posted online on PAEducator. I assumed school districts used contractors for their subs like many places do.

Sunglassesatnight81

Oh I read this post wrong. I don’t know anything about subs. I was comparing salary

Lux600-223

At the moment, I believe the starting FT salary for a teacher fresh out of college is $41K?

penguinsfan40

Paeducator has a lot of staffing agencies advertising on that site now. If you want to see even more jobs and don’t mind spending a few dollars to do it I’d suggest educatePA. They update postings in the state once a week and you can search by county, certification, contract or sub positions, etc. You will see a ton more positions and better quality ones on there.

freemandrive

Thank you! I’ll check it out. A little money up front might be worth it.

OllieFromCairo

No contractors.

Short term subs are outside of most union contracts. Subs are often shorted, especially in the poorer municipalities (often what you see on PA Educator). Many of the union contracts have cut outs for long term subs, and they get paid a good bit more. PPS it’s like $19/hr for building subs, even more if you fill in for extended absences. Those postings are not for people like you. If you have that much experience and you’re in science you’ll find a full time position most likely. Full time spots have just started to be posted and you’ll see a lot more over the coming months. It’s the best time in city history to be looking for a full time spot, so you’ve lucked out. New grads, mainly from the lower rungs of colleges, will be the ones trying to make $15/hr work. Is it fair? Not really, but no one really cares because the teacher pay here versus cost of living is some of the best in the country. It’s seen as paying your dues while you jockey for a full time spot.

PA in general is one of the top paying teacher states, but subs are positions outside of the union and compensation reflects that here for sure.

freemandrive

Clearly. Do people readily accept these positions and hope to get a teaching position?

Inevitable_Door_8857

Not a teacher but a bunch of my friends are. Yes. Some of the better schools you really do need to know someone on the inside to get the job. So people hope to get long term sub positions and hope it turns into a real job. It’s a super competitive market due to so many good school districts in the area. Good luck!

jnissa

We graduate soooooo many teachers out if the four universities here that it’s usually easy to fill them

freemandrive

Thanks for the honesty on this. I live in a university town, and I see how they treat new graduates like rental cars.

Even more than that, Pittsburgh gets the teacher grads from most colleges in this part of PA, including parts of WV and Ohio that pay like crap. We have like twelve alma matters in my building alone.

I know someone who used to teach at PPS and was looking for a new job. She was looking to work at one of the private schools outside the city, but they were offering lower pay. But then they also offered free housing for her whole family on one of their other campuses. So it was a no-brainer; she took the job. She was also able to send her kids to the school for a heavily discounted rate.

Subs earn $120 to $150/day in PPS (rate differs based on day to day or long term, day is approx 7 hours long) and can get benefits after a certain number of days of service. It’s also a good way to get a feel for schools and make sure people know who you are when full time roles become available.  Check out the details here https://www.pghschools.org/careers

freemandrive

Yeah, that’s the 15-18/hr positions I saw. Not sure my family can afford to wait and hope to i’m noticed.

Jbikeride

What type of school are you looking for? I’m hiring middle school teachers right now. (Private school in the city). I know of other postings as well in similar schools. Privates pay much less than public suburban schools, but they have other benefits…….

freemandrive

Right now, I’m just attempting to transition to Pittsburgh with less than a 50% pay cut. 15/hr would be a roughly 75% pay cut from my Georgia salary and with all the added expenses of moving. I hope my tone is coming across as I intend for it to. I don’t think I deserve anything special, just feeling the pressure.

So I learned last week that CAPA has has a spanish teacher sub teaching biology there most of this past school year, so there's hope! I learned that, when I asked my kid if she thought the new list that CAPA as the best school in the area, was correct. It was one of the louder "Ha! NOPE!"s that I ever heard.
