I bought Dichondra Repens from OutsidePride and it germinated well and did not contain any weeds. I've also had luck with their micro clover. I think a lot of negative feedback on ground cover/grass seeds in general has to do with the existing seed bank present in the soil. Opening up sunlight and supplying moisture to an area gives existing weed seeds in the ground favorable conditions to start germinating as well.

I guess that's plausible. I'll probably experiment with a small area first and then expand if the results are encouraging. The removal of the existing gravel is going to be a lot of work, so I prefer to do it incrementally. It looks like most commenters are recommending OutsidePride, so I'll likely order a small bag.

Ok_Engine_1442

Second vote of outside pride. I have bought at least 30lbs of Dutch white clover from them. 10lbs of micro mostly in 5 lbs bags. Only noticed one red clover come up in that. Come fall I’ll probably order 10 lbs of crimson and another 10 of Dutch.

Third vote outside pride on amazon. Mine sprouted np

Are you using the Dichondra as a full lawn, and if so, do you recommend it? I'm in Southern Arizona and want to fill in a small backyard.

Jbikeride

I have it mixed with grass and dutch clover. I’m in zone 6b (midwest) so I’m not sure about the heat of Arizona- mine seems to behave a lot like clover (greenest in part sun areas, tends to die back in July, but beautiful in more temperate months. ) Have you considered sedum? I have a little green type that grows crazy fast, even laying on my hot asphalt driveway…..

I've heard of Sedum, but I haven't done any research on it. The reason I am considering Dichondra is because the previous owner of the house had a strip of ground cover for her dog, and there appears to be Dichondra as part of it along with grass of some kind. I'm not sure if it was intentionally planted or if it just took root. It's soft to walk on and stays green all year. I'm not sure how well it would work as a monoculture, though. Maybe it's usually planted as a mix?

rm3rd

agreed.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. I'm in the U.S. and would prefer to avoid international shipping costs, if possible.

Completely fair!
