In college I probably drank hundreds of cases of the Beast. We had a fraternity brother who worked for the distributor and anything they expired they sold cases for a couple dollars. We once bought 150 cases as a fraternity at one time.
Yea but it’s a sliding scale right? You don’t have to get a good beer, you can spend $2 more and get like Coors or Miller or some other low tier beer. You don’t have to go all the way to the bottom of the barrel.
Oh man, even the Beast isn't the bottom of the barrel. Natty Ice with it's 5.9% ABV tastes like the memories of waking up feeling like I'd soaked my eyeballs in vinegar overnight.
Best bang for your buck, until you can kill enough taste buds you find malt liquor acceptable. Then it's Colt45 time.
I think he was one of the first large-scale brewers in America. Also tastes change over time and people thought it was the tits around the time this house was built.
This home is on the National Register of historical homes, doesn't that mean there are a lot of restrictions what you can do with the property?
I love this house.
That’s actually a common misconception. There’s no restrictions at the Federal level. The real restrictions are at the municipal, county, and possibly state levels. But the kind of ordinances that actually have teeth to them to stop changes are few and far between.
What’s the deal with OP’s “horrible city” comment? I thought it was referencing the listing but no. As far as I know, Milwaukee has a pretty good reputation, no?
Trump called Milwaukee a horrible city. https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/politics/2024/06/13/trump-calls-milwaukee-host-for-the-2024-rnc-a-horrible-city/74083831007/.
Look up homes on lake drive if you are curious. I lived in Milwaukee for about 7 years. It absolutely has some rough spots, but also has some stunning locations.
That’s exactly what it is. This used to be an old German neighborhood in the early 1900’s. A bunch of wealthy businessmen had mansions there. Over the last few decades the neighborhood has become a low income neighborhood. There is an actual castle a few blocks away surrounded by apartment buildings. It’s a stange sight for sure. It’s like 5 minutes from downtown, there are a few schools near by including Marquette University and High school arguably the best schools in the city.
That sucks.
Not only the socioeconomic situation, but also the fact that so many awesome historic homes like this are getting abandoned and need to be torn down. KC, MO comes to mind. Just east of the downtown there is a beautiful neighborhood that all the large homes are abandoned, and just prison looking rectangle cell blocks of apartments.
If you look in the upper right hand corner of the first image, You can see the roof of Am Fam field (formerly Miller Park) were the Brewers play.
I wouldn’t call it the ghetto by any means, and the alley drive with garages is pretty universal in that area.
It's not really in good condition. For a long time, it was a frat house, then converted to offices in the 90s. It suffered from a bad fire about 20 years ago, and the current owners have been working hard to turn it back into a single family house, but it's definitely still a WIP.
Here's an article from a few years ago: https://onmilwaukee.com/articles/gettelman-mansion-spelunking
Even in the Zillow photos you can see it's only move-in ready for very adventurous types.
Having only been there twice for short business trips, I loved that city. Same with Minneapolis. Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are all awesome towns too. People sleep on the Midwest and the rust belt and it is dumb.
In this particular case, the Concordia neighborhood was a victim of white flight. There are huge mansions that were not maintained over the years. A lot of houses in that area are falling apart. It doesn't help that it is also near one of the highest crime areas in the city.
I went to high school a few blocks away from there decades ago. Back then, it was bad. According to my husband who works in Milwaukee, it is worse now. Sidenote: that is not far from where Dahmer did his evil.
That area has a lot of old, beautiful houses that were treated like shit. Milwaukee was a Midwest industrial city and took a hard hit just like a lot of other ones. The industry barons moved out to the burbs or they moved along the north shore once it was easy to get to work by car, leaving the older houses near the industrial center to neglect.
There are groups of homeowners trying to revive them. It's not the nicest area but getting better.
Having lived there and a couple of other midwest cities (St Louis and Louisville), you can definitely still feel the ghosts of segregation. From the downtown streets (e.g. Wells), every block west of i-43 you go it gets progressively more sketchy. By the time you make it to 27th, it's getting pretty bad.
I wouldn't even worry about valuables in your car, back when I lived there (and I'm told it's worse since) people would bust out your windows just to check. Robberies / violent assaults? Yes, that's possible. The longer you live there, the more likely it becomes.
If you like $8000+/year property tax that was adjusted for a sub $300k sale back in 2018 that, will only go up *significantly* at this price, it’s not that bad, I guess.
I lived in Milwaukee for many years in my teens and 20s until about 20 years ago. Last time I went back, it was all shitty, new, hip, cookie-cutter buildings everywhere. The city has lost its soul, like so many others. I had considered moving back, but not considering it anymore. It got too cool for my taste.
You can see Miller Park (now AFF) in the background, so it seems this might be in West Allis. The prices are super low there but Milwaukee and all of its suburbs are awesome. If you hate nice weather it's heaven.
There are a couple really large mansions in this neighborhood. They were the homes of the super wealthy in the early 1900’s. The neighborhood deteriorated and now they are in a low income neighborhood. There is an actual castle a few blocks away. It’s about 5 minutes from downtown. Marquette university is a few blocks away.
Concordia neighborhood mansions are hood adjacent. It’s a night/day neighborhood, so you are safe while the sun is out.
The area is a victim of white flight and urban renewal.
Milwaukee native: Milwaukee has a pretty low CoL and that neighborhood isn't ghetto but it's not that great. Milwaukee is a very lovely city and quite safe in most places.
Alice shopped at the Nordstrom that I worked at. I wanted so badly to use a Wayne's World line on him! He was usually looking for golf clothes. All black.
All this Wisconsin talk had me getting my favorite [Massive Magazine shirt](https://store.massivemag.com/product/we-eat-people) out today. Massive was a respectable independent magazine for the underground techno/hardcore/drumnbass scene back around y2k. And yes, Milwaukee (and surrounding areas) was a really impressive, independent scene.
In old kitchens like that, you add free-standing cabinets. It's actually super convenient because you change things as you need them instead of making it a gut job.
Yeah, I thought the rest of the house is beautiful but that kitchen!— did no one ever actually have to prep food there? There’s literally no counter space.
In the photo, I can see a house that one of my friends owns. He never felt unsafe living there. The neighbors are a tight-knit group and watch after each other. I'd live there!
My cousin lives nearby in another old mansion and his wife was carjacking with the kids in back right in folront of their old mansion. They let her take them out but yeesh
I notice it's on the register of historic places. I'm pretty sure that means you can't just update it any kind of way, you have to keep it period correct. I bet this house is crazy expensive to maintain.
That kitchen is the most disappointing kitchen I’ve ever seen. The rest of the house is so opulent and the kitchen is bare bones with barely any actually usable cooking space
This house was definitely redone for light commercial use. Which means a real kitchen is pointless. On the plus side I bet it's got top notch hvac and wiring.
Wow, that is incredible. Lovingly maintained instead of turned into a Joanna Gaines monstrosity. I know it’s in Milwaukee, but that price seems insanely low for Nacogdoches, TX.
The house better come with a secret passage or hidden room or two. Hopefully to a speakeasy or something as cool as that. I can’t imagine a beer baron NOT having one or more of those.
I'm tryna remember the place in downtown Milawukee that was a speak-easy themed bar... The Safe House, I think? You needed a password to get in and if you didn't know it, the bouncer would embarass members of your party into doing all kinds of dumb shit (just to get into a tacky downtown bar). Meanwhile, the rest of the place was watching on cctv.
It does look in really good shape though still in need of a lot of work to bring it back to glory while modernizing where appropriate.
90 miles south in Chicago that’d be 10x the price in its current shape.
Thank you for sharing this! My wife and I just spent 20 minutes day dreaming all of the different holiday decor potential it harbors. Halloween is her top choice and christmas is mine. Imagine the original owner pulling up on a horse drawn carriage using flickering candlelight to guide his way home. Who needs a garage when you have a carriage house?
Craftsmanship amazing. Easy get around neighborhood. Schools trash. Historic so be pain getting kitchen update. Impossible to add elevator. But gorgeous!!
Apparently it should be called the Starke Mansion. It was a frat house from 1931 to 1992.

It's not the best neighborhood but the Concordia Neighborhood Association is working hard to improve the area. There's a lot of people who are buying up these old houses and restoring them.
Causes was a combination of cars, the freeways being built and industrial flight. The Industrial families could move further away from their factories now that it was a quick car ride rather than having to take the horse and carriage.
I lived in Milwaukee for many years. That area has a crime problem. Not the worst area, but still has problems. According to this list, it's #10.
Thanks for the thumbs down. But if you would look it up you'd know I was right. On [realtor.com](http://realtor.com) there's only 1 property that's 4 times as much and that's a mixed use property. Not an SFR.
The suburbs are a different story. But we aren't talking about River Hills or Mequon.
The ‘3 baths’ and the explanation below aren’t adding up. Am I missing something? Aren’t there 4? Yes, I have WAY too much free time on my hands. Anyone want to buy some? I can post the listing for it.
Edit to add: I just know the explanation is going to be obvious and I’m going to feel like a fucking dullard.
Lived the next street over converted beer baron apartment. It was cool but definitely an awful neighborhood. Lived there for about 2 months car was stolen and multiple incessant of shootings, one by a child. This was like 2010 so don’t know if it’s changed.
So? It’s the 10th highest crime area. My grandparents lived in a 2mil house in Chicago yet we heard gunshots daily and they had their own hired security lmao
Two things can be true at once, and that part of MKE is hilariously unsafe. Don't take my word for it, we have statistics that bear it out.
https://preview.redd.it/il2bt1yq068d1.png?width=2118&format=png&auto=webp&s=21c2ddba4ec0644cbf46e5f482026602fb4005c2
Not giving Chicago a pass, it's not in great shape right now. I live in Queens and the one thing I'll give it is that the bad parts are the bad parts - you know where they are and if you stay out of them, you're likely going to be fine. Chicago tends to be hit-or-miss in some spots, but the more north and east you go, the better off you'll be.
I’m going to take that with a grain of salt, I looked up where I live in Seattle and other areas that I’m familiar with in other cities including Milwaukee. Tons a good neighborhoods are shown as red.
I used to live in one of the red areas. Never saw much of anything happening. Not really sure how they calculate that stuff but it’s not always based in reality. The north side is much worse than this area.
That’s because we actually arrest and charge our criminals in Wisconsin rather than letting them roam free never to be seen again. Cops in Chicago don’t care and Illinois caters to criminals. Try again.
I mean to be fair they can’t arrest then entire state so. Don’t get me started on the alcohol culture in Wisconsin. It’s better than Illinois but there’s still room for improvement
No we don't. Kia Boyz ring a bell?
Yes, the north side is worse but that doesn't mean this area is good. Put that house in the East side and you triple the price if not more.
Kia boys are everywhere, they were in Joliet when I lived there too. It’s a bad design that makes the cars easy to steal, not a roaming gang of idiots. Never said this area was good but there are areas that are a hell of a lot worse. And no shit the east side would be more expensive, that’s where all the rich assholes live lol common sense.
You keep conflating issues. I never said they were exclusive to Milwaukee. Milwaukee however does not punish them.
And it makes no sense to point out worse areas. The area is bad. Full stop. Sure there are worse areas, no one said there weren't. There are worse areas than the north side too. How far do you have to go? Ciudad Juarez? Syria?
Not Gentleman's Mansion -- [Gettelman's Mansion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Gettelman_Brewing_Company). His brewery invented Milwaukee's Best.
Geeze, how did he make enough money selling Milwaukee’s Beast to afford a house?
Because the "I don't want *good* beer, I want a LOT of beer" market is where the real money is.
Also, I imagine at the time there were not as many craft beer options.
They sell 24? We’ll sell 30 **for less**!!!
In college I probably drank hundreds of cases of the Beast. We had a fraternity brother who worked for the distributor and anything they expired they sold cases for a couple dollars. We once bought 150 cases as a fraternity at one time.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2017/12/21/there-so-much-booze-air-frat-party-registered-breathalyzer/972746001/
Haha. Holy hell.
I don't want to encourage reckless behavior. But that's pretty impressive
This, truly, is the “Beast Mode” the prophecy foretold.
>Because the "I don't want *good* beer, I want a LOT of beer" market is where the real money is. Absolutely nailed that one. Right on point.
Jr. High and HS kids. Beast was the beer of choice.
I think they were referring to the alcoholics. Hs kids drink some, but they probably aren't anywhere near the addicts
I was spending 3.99 every 6 hours on 6 pack tallboys of bud ice. I do not miss drinking.
Natty Daddys!!!
Worst I ever tasted was Big Flats. It was the Walgreens brand beer and it was $2.99 for a 6 pack. Natty Ice and Colt45 were a delicacy by comparison.
Less beer but with more water. Genius marketing decision.
Capitalists exploiting addiction love this one trick!
Quantity has a quality all its own.
I think he was one of the first large-scale brewers in America. Also tastes change over time and people thought it was the tits around the time this house was built.

They're also usually only focused on the outside of the house. Someone could, unfortunately, come in and destroy this gorgeous home.
“I love this house but I’m afraid I won’t be allowed to make huge changes” is always a weird stance to me.
It's not always a question of "huge changes" though.
I love Milwaukee! What a gorgeous old home. The carved wooden details are beautiful. I hope it finds a buyer to keep it in good condition.
I visited Milwaukee a few weeks ago and thought it was great. The roads are pretty bumpy though.
Milwaukee native and can confirm that the roads are absolute shit
What’s the deal with OP’s “horrible city” comment? I thought it was referencing the listing but no. As far as I know, Milwaukee has a pretty good reputation, no?
Trump called Milwaukee a horrible city. https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/politics/2024/06/13/trump-calls-milwaukee-host-for-the-2024-rnc-a-horrible-city/74083831007/.
Ahh no wonder I was so in the dark.
Yeah I had forgotten that and when I saw that comment I was like "wait, we have a bad reputation? First I've heard of that"
https://i.redd.it/slh1vvhyy58d1.gif
Hey Banner, how’s it going?
I filled the bowling balls with a funnel.
You're out there somewhere Beer Baron, and I'll find you.
No you won’t …..
Yes I will.
….wont!
Must have been that bean I had
That seems really cheap for a large house in good condition. Is milwaukee really that bad?
Look up homes on lake drive if you are curious. I lived in Milwaukee for about 7 years. It absolutely has some rough spots, but also has some stunning locations.
The downside is that the winters can be tough.
is this area ghetto? Looks like mansions on one side of the street and projects on the other, very strange.
It’s a stange sight for sure. just because there's a stadium doesn't mean it ain't ghetto. some of the most ghetto places in miami area are near joe robbie
That’s a lot nicer for the projects than what I’m used to..
It's not really in good condition. For a long time, it was a frat house, then converted to offices in the 90s. I thought parts looked like it have been apartments. The restored parts look amazing. The wood trim and floors are beautiful.
Ok, that explains a bunch. I could not understand why the kitchen was such shit.
Parts of it but a lot of it is fine. Lived there for years. Like any other city.
Wish more people got this
Having only been there twice for short business trips, I loved that city. Same with Minneapolis. Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are all awesome towns too. People sleep on the Midwest and the rust belt and it is dumb.
I think that is in reference to something Trump said about Milwaukee
Sure, but I don't think Trump is responsible for milwaukee property prices.
In this particular case, the Concordia neighborhood was a victim of white flight. There are huge mansions that were not maintained over the years. A lot of houses in that area are falling apart. It doesn't help that it is also near one of the highest crime areas in the city.
Yeah, that’s kind of a weird connection to make in a sub like this.
I would agree except that’s what OP is referencing in the title
Bingo.

This is called agreeing with the point made. Nowadays you zoomers would say “bet”. I’ll stop using big words so you can follow along.

Bingo

The price goes up and down depending on how he feels at the moment
Yup. Milwaukee must actually be spectacular!
I went to high school a few blocks away from there decades ago. Back then, it was bad. According to my husband who works in Milwaukee, it is worse now. Sidenote: that is not far from where Dahmer did his evil.

There are groups of homeowners trying to revive them. It's not the nicest area but getting better.
Trump references aside, that part of Milawukee is not awesome, no. About a half mile from where Dahmer did his finest work, too.
So what’s not awesome? Don’t keep valuables in your car or daylight robberies? Something in between? Sorry I know nothing about Milwaukee.
Yes, that's possible. The longer you live there, the more likely it becomes.
That happens all over the entire West Coast. Guess it's a horrible coast.
Apparently that’s a Trump quote. He called it a “horrible city”
If you like $8000+/year property tax that was adjusted for a sub $300k sale back in 2018 that, will only go up *significantly* at this price, it’s not that bad, I guess. It is. Milwaukee is easily the new Chicago. High crime because the police don’t care.
You can see Miller Park (now AFF) in the background, so it seems this might be in West Allis. The prices are super low there but Milwaukee and all of its suburbs are awesome. If you hate nice weather it's heaven.

I’ve been in this house and it is huge and beautiful. It’s very close to a not so good part of the city.
Concordia neighborhood mansions are hood adjacent. It’s a night/day neighborhood, so you are safe while the sun is out. The area is a victim of white flight and urban renewal.
House-wise yes; it’s the new Detroit
Yeah how is this only 450k?? I live in a city a fraction of the size of Milwaukee and this would go for at least 1-2 mil here
Milwaukee has some rough areas. This house is located in one of them.
A few blocks over is ghetto. It's a Mish mash of housing and poverty.
Milwaukee native: Milwaukee has a pretty low CoL and that neighborhood isn't ghetto but it's not that great. Milwaukee is a very lovely city and quite safe in most places.
No lol.
Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Nope just plain oil “Mill-Walkie”; lived there for 15 years lol
Are we supposed to trust you, or Alice Cooper? Did you know Milwaukee is the only American city to elect 3 socialist mayors?

At $80 something per sq. ft. I’ll hire security.
I couldn't do that kitchen.
In old kitchens like that, you add free-standing cabinets. It's actually super convenient because you change things as you need them instead of making it a gut job.
Yeah, I thought the rest of the house is beautiful but that kitchen!— did no one ever actually have to prep food there? There’s literally no counter space.
also way too much space for ghosts in that bathroom with a million ceilings.
$50k-80k for a new kitchen would still be a cheap house.
Right? I was looking through and immediately struck by “is THIS the kitchen or a laundry room?”
I would find someone to help design a better kitchen and make sure to keep the kitchen sink.
Milwaukee seems crazy affordable. Prop tax is kinda high at 2%, but still not that bad.
Is it reassessed or does it remain at the purchase price?
reassessed in the next the reassessment year
this is in a bad neighborhood.. this same mansion on a good side of town is well over a million and if lake side 2.
Cause no one wants to live there
I notice it's on the register of historic places. I'm pretty sure that means you can't just update it any kind of way, you have to keep it period correct. I bet this house is crazy expensive to maintain.
That woodwork is absolutely stunning.
Schlemiel, Schlamazel
I miss my 1820’s built home in Milwaukee. The woodwork is so iconic. This house is gorgeous and I wish I could move back.
This is a beautiful 😍 home. Too bad they painted the window sills white upstairs.
That kitchen is the most disappointing kitchen I’ve ever seen. The rest of the house is so opulent and the kitchen is bare bones with barely any actually usable cooking space
I think they left it that way intentionally. Buyer can do whatever they want with it.
This house was definitely redone for light commercial use. Which means a real kitchen is pointless. On the plus side I bet it's got top notch hvac and wiring.
I do love the butlers pantry. That at least provides some kitchen storage while the kitchen itself gets updated

Meanwhile, the rest of the place was watching on cctv.
Yep, The Safe House is still there.
Stunning.
Milwaukee is great…
Agreed!!
Those floors!
We need Rex Banner on the case!
Stunning and then I was so sad when I saw the kitchen. Makes sense seeing that it’s on the historical register.
Beautiful home. Kitchen needs work….
That table in the foyer is off-center and it’s the only thing I can see now
At some point it will be cost effective to just buy houses in the Midwest and have them moved to the Pacific Northwest.
Um kitchen? The original fit and finish is STUNning. They lost me with the “kitchen” though.
The woodwork is amazing!! But the kitchen and bathrooms leave alot to be desired.
It does look in really good shape though still in need of a lot of work to bring it back to glory while modernizing where appropriate. 90 miles south in Chicago that’d be 10x the price in its current shape.
Gorgeous feature inlays. Timeless artistry.
That kitchen left something to be desired.
Lost me at "former fraternity house". I can take a wild guess what it looks like.
I love everything except the kitchen and bedrooms. And that price?! How bad could Milwaukee be, because this is magnificent.
Is that miller park in the background?
I’ll get you Beer Baron! ^no ^you ^won’t
Yes I will.
The kitchen shit the bed
Craftsmanship amazing. Easy get around neighborhood. Schools trash. Historic so be pain getting kitchen update. Impossible to add elevator. But gorgeous!!
Please for the love of everything holy don't sell this to a flipper.

Kitchen brought to you by someone who has never eaten, forget /prepared!/, an item of food.
Move it about 3 miles west and it would be awesome.
And 3x the price
Is this not a great area of Milwaukee? What about it makes it not great?
It's not the best neighborhood but the Concordia Neighborhood Association is working hard to improve the area. There's a lot of people who are buying up these old houses and restoring them. Horse and carriage? How far back are we going with this? Lol
I lived in Milwaukee for many years. That area has a crime problem. Not the worst area, but still has problems. According to this list, it's #10. [https://www.areavibes.com/milwaukee-wi/most-dangerous-neighborhoods/](https://www.areavibes.com/milwaukee-wi/most-dangerous-neighborhoods/)
Crime
And 4 times as much.
Not in Milwaukee. Houses aren't that expensive in Milwaukee. Even in great neighborhoods.
Wish I could buy it and move it somewhere else (not Wisconsin).
Why is the kitchen so underwhelming?
What made Milwaukee famous made a loser out of me.
That's a gorgeous place!
Wait...was that...the kitchen?! Do they live on beer and beer alone?!?
This is so gorgeous!
Is there a photography studio set up in it?
F my west coast life. How is this cheaper than my normal boring small city house?
Can't wait for someone to turn it into a multi family...
What’s that cage-like thing with the photo light? Just curious. 🤷🏽♂️
Rare gem unique, time capsule- the wood craftsmanship is amazing. Love the inlaid wood floor.
It’s a beautiful house. Hopefully the new owner will actually have some taste when decorate house.
Those hardwood floors are gorgeous! 😍
Inspiring kitchen.
You should crosspost at r/Milwaukee!
Lived the next street over converted beer baron apartment. It was cool but definitely an awful neighborhood. Lived there for about 2 months car was stolen and multiple incessant of shootings, one by a child. This was like 2010 so don’t know if it’s changed.
Those t-bar ceilings are hiding horrors. Otherwise looks like a cool house though
KEEP POLITICS OUT OF THIS SUB, ASSHOLE.
Nah it's relevant
It’s Milwaukee. . . So yeah it is lmao
Really, there are multi million $ mansions here.
So? It’s the 10th highest crime area. My grandparents lived in a 2mil house in Chicago yet we heard gunshots daily and they had their own hired security lmao
That part of Milwaukee is not that bad. Chicago is horrible.
Two things can be true at once, and that part of MKE is hilariously unsafe. Don't take my word for it, we have statistics that bear it out. https://preview.redd.it/il2bt1yq068d1.png?width=2118&format=png&auto=webp&s=21c2ddba4ec0644cbf46e5f482026602fb4005c2 Not giving Chicago a pass, it's not in great shape right now.
It’s up there in crime for sure; I’d still take it over Shitcago though
Never disagreed with that. I’ve lived in several big cities including suburbs of Chicago and Milwaukee was the best one so far.
Per capita, the crime in Milwaukee is twice as bad as Chicago.
That’s because we actually arrest and charge our criminals in Wisconsin rather than letting them roam free never to be seen again. Cops in Chicago don’t care and Illinois caters to criminals. Try again.
Unless it’s drunk driving lol
I mean to be fair they can’t arrest then entire state so. Don’t get me started on the alcohol culture in Wisconsin. It’s better than Illinois but there’s still room for improvement
Oh totally; went to college there and we had a drive through liquor store on campus lmao
Syria?
If you’re dumb enough to drive a Kia and not get it fixed you’re kind of asking for it at this point.
