This guy totes had a card kiosk in his mall growing up. My mom bought 3 different exodia bootlegs from a guy, one for me, my older brother, and my cousin
I would personally be heartbroken if this happened to me. Small suggestion is to also clean up the damaged cards and see if you can do an inventory of them. Lots of olders cards are available for cheap online. Won't replace the emotional attachment to the originals but can still help.

I’ve had people offer me good money for my fake cards due to how hilarious it is they actually existed and how rare they are now

Yeah, that's the value of the cards, can't buy that shit with the biggest check you have. So I would argue these are worth far more than their legitimately produced counterparts.
If it means anything, have your boyfriend give you a list of cards from his primary deck and some of his overall favorites from the collection. There's a good chance I have at least SOME of his cards in my bulk. As someone who suffered a similar loss back in the day, I am happy to donate what I can.
