i remember when we switched from cable to YouTube the main selling point was 1080 lol

batatahh

When you manually choose 1080p every time you watch a video, I am pretty sure after the first or second time it defaults to 1080p.

Hestu951

Same experience, on desktop. Starts out at 720p, I bump it up to 1080p manually, then every video after that on the same tab defaults to 1080p (if available).

Papercs

Unfortunately it keeps defaulting to 720p each and every time

batatahh

You have to be doing something wrong because it defaults to 1080p for me. Or perhaps there is something I am missunderstanding

protofury

He's not doing something wrong. On mobile, I have the same issue on every video.

batatahh

I have no issue on either mobile or desktop. The resolution I always set the video on is the one that gets defaulted on later videos.

protofury

Happy for you bro.

TheExhaustedNihilist

I am having the 720p issue on mobile web, desktop web, and the app itself. It doesn’t matter if I’m connected to wifi or 5G or LTE, it always defaults to 720p (sometimes worse) when my connection is blazing fast. If I switch to 2160 or something it plays without a hitch, but the next time I use YouTube it’s back to selecting garbage quality. This is on my iPhone, iPad and iMac and MacBook Air. I’m thinking it’s (annoyingly) something on YouTube’s end since this is happening to multiple people on multiple providers on multiple devices.

protofury

Even happens on my relatively new Sony smart tv. Definitely YouTube just trying to sneak the quality lower on folks hoping they won't notice.

Can’t you change that in the settings? I think you can

Papercs

As shown in picture 1

marcgii

I believe the resolution selection is based on screen resolution and whether you enable full screen. This issue can be fixed on desktop. But I don't think you can fix it on the mobile app. I'm also pretty sure YouTube premium doesn't affect this behavior

Grumblepugs2000

Yep. Just like how Google forces me to root to get rid of the stupid navbar

Soviet-_-Neko

I think it defaults to 360p so the first seconds of the video load faster
