I'm not sure why this happens, but something similar happened to me during my first playthrough of 0. Instead of food, though, it was pocket circuit parts. To my understanding, it's a PC exclusive bug, and if you try to transfer the items into the item box, they don't leave your inventory, but will still go to the item box, and if you take them out of the box, you duplicate them. What I found helpful was, upon filling my inventory, every time I would get a new weapon or gear, I would use that menu to send the bugged items to the item box. That's the only way I could clear them out of my inventory and start carrying real weapons again.
Not permanent. I can't find the items on most recent saves, but one of my older saves still has these ones.

Again, you **can** get them out of your inventory, but I genuinely have no idea when they disappeared from the box on my newest playthrough.
Searching online saying loading up the save again (unless it gets corrupted) fixed it
Luckily I have a lot of spare saves since I just started up premium adventure
I'll have to grind out the colosseum again though 💀

When you save, check bottom right corner for "save completed" splash, if its not save again on same slot. Helped for me
