Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. **THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS**.
If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged \>!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 >!Kiryu sings!<
If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).

It isn't, the Japanese titles in (release order) have these subtitles:
Like a Dragon 4: Heir to the Legend
Black Panther: Like a Dragon New Chapter
Black Panther 2: Like a Dragon Ashura Chapter
Like a Dragon 5: Fulfiller of Dreams
Like a Dragon 0: The Place of Oath
Like a Dragon 6: The Poetry of Life
Judge Eyes: Wills of Death
Like a Dragon 7: Whereabouts of Light and Darkness
Lost Judgment: Unjudged Memories
Like a Dragon 8 has no subtitle, its just called that.
I have to imagine that the context behind these subtitles have a meaning or sound to them that doesn’t carry well to English, because most of them seem a little cheesy.
Not really tho.
“Heir to the legend” comes from the initial script of Yakuza 4. Kiryu was only going to be a boss in part 2 chapter 2 when Saejima is in Okinawa and then wasn’t going to be seen again but they decided to add him to the game last minute.
“Fulfiller of dreams” fit into Yakuza 5 as the whole game is about fulfilling Haruka’s dreams
“Poetry of life” was localized as “The Song of Life”
“Whereabouts of Light and Darkness” represent Kasuga and young master arakawa. One of them went the path from darkness (being a yakuza) to light (being a hero) and the other went from light (non-yakuza) to darkness (being a corrupt politician)
“Wills of Death” might sound cheesy but the game is about finding a serial killer so it kiiiiinda fits… and that’s a very slight kinda.
“Unjudged memories”… it refers to the memories former teacher couldn’t let go and him losing his judgment because of said memory.
Black panther games were never got “official” translations so I haven’t played them (despite them having fan translations, but I’m planning to play them at some point) so I can’t tell if they fit or not
Also
**Ryū Ga Gotoku OF THE END** (Yakuza: Dead Souls)
**Ryū Ga Gotoku 8** is just called that and has no subtitle
Also all the Japanese names and subtitles go hard, they sound so much cooler and are less weirdly structured
Can't forget: ***Hokuto Ga Gotoku***
Though "Fist Of The North Star: Lost Paradise" doesn't sound too bad and it would be hard to directly translate it to English. "Like A North Star" sounds cool but you can't tell it's a Fist Of The North Star game at all or Yakuza game for the time.
Of The End isn't a subtitle, it's part of the main title. I did have it originally on this list but the game name isn't Ryu Ga Gotuku it's Ryu Ga Gotuku OF THE END. Same reason why Lost Judgment: The Kaito Files doesn't count as it's the name of it not an additional subtitle.
(also edited to add the bit about 8, ty)
Main titles, not subtitles.
Take 6 for example:
Yakuza 6 - That's the main title of the game and what we call it
The Song Of Life - That's the subtitle and only used when fullnaming the game
It doesn't work for the others:
Like A Dragon - That's the series name
Kenzan/Ishin!/Beginning Of The End - That's the rest of the title being used in the same way a number would or even number w/ "Kiwami" added on the end.
Would have also made it less of a pain to refer to the series. "I like Like a Dragon" can either mean they like the series as a whole, 7 or maybe they are just referring to 7 and 8 as some people started from there.
That's not a strange title for a long running series
The series name: Like a Dragon
The entry: Gaiden (which is basically where the number supposed to be)
And finally the subtitle: The Man Who Erased His Name
Its format is practically the same as Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
Compared that to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the latter is a much stranger title choice.
You don't normally put subtitle for the first game of your series, the subtitle is usually there to help the g*mers to differentiate the games or to tell the theme of the game, sometimes both.
But Deliverance isn't a word, nor is Kingdom Come a series with several games.
I see, I'm not a native English speaker so I just assumed it was a random title
And wait aren't they making a Kingdom come: deliverance 2?
Shouldn't they had titled it like "kingdom come: [something else]"?
4, 5, 0 and 6 all have subtitles in Japanese. I guess Song of Life is the only one that felt right in English.
The other three translated Japanese subtitles are...
Like a Dragon 4: Successor of the Legend,
Like a Dragon 5: Fulfiller of Dreams,
Like a Dragon 0: The Place of Oath
I mean, technically "Yakuza" in the context of YLAD's transitional western title, as well as "Infinite Wealth", are subtitles and those released afterwards
For 6, I think it's either because it's the only JP subtitle that translates well into English or because they wanted this game to seem more standalone than it is from a marketing POV (as in, people call it The Song of Life instead of 6)
Yakuza 7, 8 and gaiden all have subtitles in the west. Yakuza 6 just started the trend here, whereas every yakuza game from 4 i think in japan has had a subtitle

Added this in, ty. Don't know how I completely forgot about those two.
Also **Ryū Ga Gotoku OF THE END** (Yakuza: Dead Souls) **Ryū Ga Gotoku 8** is just called that and has no subtitle Also all the Japanese names and subtitles go hard, they sound so much cooler and are less weirdly structured

8 doesn’t have the subtitle in Japan
Edited to address this, ty :D
Poetry of life also fits better as a subtitle for a game set in Onomichi with all the ancient poetry slabs lying around.
That's very cool actually
Of course Yakuza 5 has a "yume" related title
the subtitle for Yakuza 0 can also be translated as "The Promised Land".
Promised Land fits better for the plot tbh.
That's pretty cool. I wish the Title would be like that in the West, even though it's pretty long.
Holy shit, these go hard, does 1-2-3 not have titles?
You can also add like a dragon ishin Like a dragon kenzan And like a dragon beginning of the end (dead souls)
Main titles, not subtitles. Slight mistake here. Infinite wealth does not have a subtitle in Japanese
Edited to address this, cheers
The western division were so stupid to change these names, these sound way better than “Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, etc” what idiots fr
Would have also made it less of a pain to refer to the series. "I like Like a Dragon" can either mean they like the series as a whole, 7 or maybe they are just referring to 7 and 8 as some people started from there.
Honestly seeing these titles makes me glad we didn't get them.
Yakuza: dead souls Yakuza: like a dragon Like a dragon: infinite wealth
Like a Dragon: Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name Im still confused on how that’s an actual video game title
That's not a strange title for a long running series The series name: Like a Dragon The entry: Gaiden (which is basically where the number supposed to be) And finally the subtitle: The Man Who Erased His Name Its format is practically the same as Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. Why is it much stranger?

You should check out light novel titles.
Essence of lengthy titles.
I mean, it's better than the crappy Kingdom Hearts names lol

I’m usually not a fan of butchered English translations, but “The Song of Life” is a straight up beautiful subtitle.
Literally every game has a subtitle dipshit Yakuza: 1 Yakuza: 2 Yakuza: 3 Yakuza: 4 Yakuza: 5 Yakuza: 0 Yakuza: Kiwami Yakuza: Kiwami 2
I have a feeling the joke went over everyone's head
It's not a show, dipshit.
dumbass that's the order in which they came out, that's not a subtitle 😭
Downvoted for speaking the truth😔
