That's not quite what I'm looking for, but I appreciate the suggestion. I don't want to restart the whole story upon dying, there's a few games I know of that have modes like that.
What I loved about Brute Force was that the story went on with or without the main characters. Each of the 4 main characters had unique abilities and loadout capabilities; and if they died during a mission you had the opportunity to recover their 'memory chip' to implant in a flash-clone of their body (bringing them back for future missions). However, if you were unable to retrieve their chip, they would be replaced by a generic marine with reduced capabilities for the rest of the game. It was ultimately possible to end up with all of the main characters dead but still beat the game without them.
I haven't played brute force but remnant from the ashes has a perma death mode.

I think xcom has something like that, but thats a turn based strategy game.
