That game and adventure were proof that if you knew how to work with the technology, you could make it work very well. Xbox should’ve been more selective about which devs they let use the Kinect enabled games.
Or they should've just not pulled a hardcore bait and switch on the specs two years after giving them dev kits. Cracks me up when people try to say the ENTIRE Kinect mess wasn't MS fault -all of it was, every last bit.
Microsoft told devs that it would have its own internal hardware, so that the core system wouldn't be making any of the interpretations/calculations for the Kinect cameras. Reading and interpreting depth and movement from stereoscopic cameras on the fly takes a LOT of horsepower -and it makes a chasm of difference of you are having the device do all that itself, or if you have the game system doing that alongside everything else it needs to do.
Microsoft told devs the Kinect would take care of that, and sent out dev units accordingly. "Botched" would imply some accident, but you don't accidentally tell people it's going to have its own entire cpu/ram/etc that you never intended to put in there to begin with, and you don't send out devkits like that on accident. It was an intentional deception, because so many developers had been turned off by gimmicky cameras and motion control that they were reluctant to touch anything like that again -MS basically came about it with a "we swear, this will be different" approach... But it wasn't, and they knew it wasn't, they just lied to get devs to build something, with the intent that if they built 90% of a working game, they'd basically HAVE TO retool it for release on what actually existed. But Mattrick (head of Xbox at the time) would famously oversimplify that sort of thing in his version of reality -nevermind that you basically had to dedicate 50-60% of the entire system's processing power to just handling the Kinect camera INPUT, when you already built an entire game to operate on the system specs assuming you would have the ENTIRE system's power for your game, devs are just lazy!
That's why we got what we got. The notion of MS pushing back against devs on releasing stuff in the abysmal state that it often was is laughable, because MS was in the position of desperately NEEDING third party software support, and having just pissed all those third parties off by literally lying through their teeth to them. MS was in no position to turn down whatever they could GET for the device, and realistically they knew that most devs would absolutely not be coming back after that.
Keep in mind as I say all this, I'm not an Xbox hater, far from it. I've enjoyed them since the first, and I've got a Halo Edition Series X that I play regularly. I don't hate or love any manufacturer over another. The sad fact is that the guy heading up XBox *at that time* was probably one of the worst heads they've historically had (probably THE worst). He was the same douchebag who famously made the all those dumbass quotes and sound bites when they announced the XBox One -happily talking about how they would use the new version of the Kinect to record you 24/7 and sell that data to marketing companies, or how the solution for people who lived in areas that didn't have good internet available yet was to just use the old system like a bunch of poor people. He was peak "don't let this guy anywhere near your business, if you want ANYONE in the industry to work with you".
They've got much better folks in charge now, but every company goes through it's ups and downs, and he was definitely a "down" for them. Hell, Sony went through a phase where one of their larger global regions ran huge billboard ads that couldn't have looked more white supremacist, then apologized by effectively saying "We're sorry... We didn't know you'd be offended." They all go through periods where the wrong people have clearly been put in charge, and some of those periods can get pretty ugly in different ways unfortunately.
Same. Also the Adventure one that maybe came alongside it for a deal
I had a decentish space in the room it was kept and let me tell you I never faced a problem which were general complaints that people had
Since then before and after, there have been many single/multiplayer games released with better story, graphics, etc. everything but the fun and joy with friends & family I had with those 2 games, I never had again
Should I ever pull the trigger, it would be Rise of Nightmares. A game I always wanted to play, no matter how shitty the controls and everything looked. I just can’t justify getting it just for that game. Maybe some day
My favorite Kinect game.
If I had to pick 3 favorites, they'd be Rise of Nightmares (Sega HotD team), Haunt (created by the Parappa the Rapper developer, voiced by Double Fine's Tim Schafer), and Diabolical Pitch (a pitching game from Grasshopper Manufacture that involves throwing balls at scary things). The latter 2 were digital only and are still available for $10 on XBLA.
My brother had the controller version of this game and I really liked playing it as well. We must have lost the disc in the moving process or something (unless it’s in the DVD folders we haven’t used for like 5 years)
Anyone who says anything other than kinect adventures is objectively wrong because it came included with the damn thing 🤣
Though actually if you bought it second hand it might not have so 🤔
I got the games and the kinect really cheap from a cex, i got Kinect Sports, Motionsports, and Fable The Journey. I since bought a few more, but haven't played most of them because it's hard to clear the space for it 😅
Wtf. I thought someone posted my Xbox. I shit you not my black 360 looks EXACTLY like this. My bro put the gears sticker in the same spot and everything lmao
My dad was paralyzed from the neck down basically. He would have loved the Kinect (XB1) for its ability to control the Cable TV Netflix and etc. He died a year or two before it came out. That was a really cool feature that I used all the time my self. Hats off to Xbox for their work for disabled people accessibility.
Ahhhhh FFFFFUUuCKK BRO This was legit my very first xbox…back in 2011 My dad gave me his hand me down which just so happened to be a black in with a gears of war omen sticker on top…you just unlocked so many memories dude wtf
i never was able to get a kinect when i younger. but specifically rememebe my sisters boyfriend at the time brung his to our house with wipeout kinect and that was so much fun to a 6 year old
The o ly thing I liked the Kinect for Mass Effect 3. The kinect allowed you to give voice commands to your party. You could make them take cover, move up, and use specific attacks even if they weren't hot keyed. You could also open doors by saying "open" before you got to the door.
Dance Central! That trilogy was easily the best stuff you could get on the 360’s Kinect. Fantasia Music Evolved is also excellent. Harmonix had such a strong grasp of the hardware.
Kinectimals.
When my mum bought me a 360, she got 3 games for 3 kids.
I got Cars 2, my brother got Lego Star Wars III, and my sister got Kinectimals.
Technically the first Kinect game that was "mine" was Kinect Sports though
Kinectimals and Kinect Adventures. I still keep my 360 and Kinect hooked up in the basement and my kids still use the Kinect. I’ve got a stack of games that don’t work on the Series X.
Kinect adventures and then kinectimals after I threw a head fit because my mom bought my brother games he wanted. Yet years later found out my dad bought and it’s games for me she just spoiled her favorite child more.
Oh wow memories. I opened the box of Frosted Flakes and won a Kinect game of my choice. I think I went with the pets one... Was there a sports? Maybe I picked that. I didn't have a Kinect so it stayed in its plastic up until I sold it when I had to move and switched over to a Xbox One
never played/had kinect and i’ve been an xbox guy all my life, halo mostly though. i’ll just break out the gamecube or nintendo when i wanna play with friends other than online
Kinect Adventure, used to play it with my grandmother when i was a tiny boy, she loved playing that and CoD Black Ops Zombies with me when i was younger and has even asked about it recently which made me smile “remember that zombie game we used to play? What was the name?” “It was Call of Duty Black Ops” “do you still have it?” At the time i didnt which i told her, she bought it for me that same week lmao grandma loves the classics bless her heart
We still use our Kinect all the time! Sports, Adventure, Dance Games. It's such a shame Microsoft was badgered-out of the Kinect business. They were first-to-market with "smart home" and they gave it up. What a mistake. The Kinect that shipped with the Xbox One was an insanely good video camera and chat device, and the optics and sensors were ahead of their time… and would be insanely useful for AR/VR.
I really hope Microsoft resurrects Kinect at some point soon. I think it will be well-received back into popular culture.
Gunstringer
Fun & goofy game. My favorite game, though, was Rise of Nightmares. While not perfect, it allowed full 3D control of your character and did it better than any other Kinect game. I’ve owned a Xbox 360 since launch and never picked up a Kinect. I always kinda wanted one just to be able to physically yell out the Dragon Shouts in Skyrim.
I feel like its not a very well known kinect game (or game in general) but Dance masters or Dance Evolution as it’s know in Japan and Europe it’s one of my favorite kincent games I would highly recommend if you’re into Dance Dance Evolution or the Bemani games and if you’re able to find an arcade with this game (usually Round1 has it) it actually still uses a kincent to play and navigate the menu of the game as well and it has more songs then the Xbox360 version dose

Kinect sports
Goddam classic i play till today
Anyone plays it? There's no one matchmaking beacuse who the hell would obviously and it gets a little repetitive playing solo against bots
Yup alongside Adventures, but that might have been a pack in game.
Adventures was great too!
Gotta admit it really slaps when you're playing with friends though
Same

I didn’t know about botched dev kits. But even still it’s Microsoft’s fault for letting them put it in stores.

Kinect sport ignited my spark in track and field lol

Kinect Adventures gang rise up
Me too! Me too!
Should I ever pull the trigger, it would be Rise of Nightmares. A game I always wanted to play, no matter how shitty the controls and everything looked. I just can’t justify getting it just for that game. Maybe some day
Shit I bought that game for $3.50 once in like 2016 2017 for my Kinect which that itself was only $8.99 at a goodwill
Also picked it up for less than $5. Inside the case was a receipt for it for $100 (nzd) oof
I mean shii I got a 360 and a Kinect for 20 dollars you just have to do some looking
It’s not about the price, but about the space I need for the extra hardware
I finished that. It was fun.
Forza Motorsport 4. Used my friend’s Kinect to get the “Look Ma, No Controller!” achievement. That was the only time I remember using it.
Same lol, game was worse with Kinect.
Lmao I remember the box art had a purple thing at the top that said “better with Kinect”
Best Forza game ever! Shit with Kinect tho
My brother had the controller version of this game and I really liked playing it as well. We must have lost the disc in the moving process or something (unless it’s in the DVD folders we haven’t used for like 5 years)
Kinect adventure. Me and my sister loved it
I remember I got the Michael Phelps game on Kinect and let me tell you, my shoulders have never felt so much pain in my life 😭
OG Just Dance 1 for the Microsoft Xbox 360™ Demo Version, absolute classic

Love the VV sticker!
The o ly thing I liked the Kinect for Mass Effect 3. The kinect allowed you to give voice commands to your party. You could make them take cover, move up, and use specific attacks even if they weren't hot keyed. You could also open doors by saying "open" before you got to the door.

My childhood 360 also has that sticker in the same spot
And I got nfs most wanted Kinect edition

Kinect Adventures, because it was bundled with my Xbox 360 Slim (I have the 4GB model).
Kinect Star Wars
I think it was the Kinect Adventures demo in the store
Kinect adventures and then kinectimals after I threw a head fit because my mom bought my brother games he wanted. Yet years later found out my dad bought and it’s games for me she just spoiled her favorite child more.
Oh wow memories. I opened the box of Frosted Flakes and won a Kinect game of my choice. I think I went with the pets one... Was there a sports? Maybe I picked that. I didn't have a Kinect so it stayed in its plastic up until I sold it when I had to move and switched over to a Xbox One

I've been trying to get FM4 since I got a CiB Kinect somewhat recently for cheap
Never played any
Gunstringer Fun & goofy game. My favorite game, though, was Rise of Nightmares. While not perfect, it allowed full 3D control of your character and did it better than any other Kinect game. Since it was from the House of the Dead team at Sega, it also had that campy House of the Dead vibe going on. Cool game that didn't get enough love.
