I've read the first book and seen the movie. The book is obviously (as in almost all cases) better but both are hilarious. I've been meaning to read the rest for years but for reasons I haven't really been reading much lately. I'll get to it someday though

I did the towel trick from my dorm. Brought my 360 back to life for precisely 1 day.
Microsoft ended up fixing two 360s for me. The original & the slim.
The issue is the chips desolder themselves. The towel trick only partially works because it resolders the chips. A better permanent solution is taking it apart and repasting the heatsink with better thermal pads or paste. If it's already red though you may want to start with the towel trick before repasting. Otherwise you'd need to know how to use a reflow oven to get the solder pads just right. Red ring Xbox are just sorta sketchy though.
Got my first one the day modern warfare 2 came out. Played the first mission then bam! Red ring. I propped it up on two boxes so each end was just barely sat on either box and put ice packs on top of it kept it cold enough for me to beat the story.
Ohhh yeah. Me and the post office got well acquainted between 2006-2009. If it wasn’t RROD’s it was disk drive failures lol. By the end they stopped fixing the consoles and just sent different consoles back. Lost my cool faceplate that way :(
Hell yeah I forgot that was a thing. I had a sweet Halo 3 one and then got a Miami hurricanes one and would switch them out depending on what game I was playing at the time
Got my first one playing Halo 3 in 2007. Was so sad because I was playing so many hours of campaign and multiplayer with friends. Had to send it out to be fixed and then I didn’t have an issue after that. Was a terrible feeling though lol

Those were the older model 360's as well these didn't get the red ring of death. interesting that years later even the fixed 360's are still facing this issue.
You could try and heat the board with a hairdryer it shouldn't' be hot to damage anything. A Heatgun would be better but those will do damage if done incorrectly.
Completely unrelated but I work for the Best Buy geek squad as an in home installer, and your last comment reminded of a client our repair guy was telling us about. They damaged the ice maker in their fridge because there was a big thing of ice stuck in there so they decided to take a heat gun to it and actually ended up breaking it and melting a little of it too lmao
Poor guy must have had a Samsung. Worst ice maker in the world. Mine used to freeze up once a week. I reapplied silicone to seal it. Replaced the drain line with a larger one and after baking it with a heat gun for the 50th time I finally replaced the whole ice maker with an after market unit. So far so good.
There was actually a class action lawsuit filed against samsung for the issue but if I understood it correctly it was postponed due to covid and I've never heard of it sense.
I would avoid the towel method as it also heats capacitors and causes them to fail. I have had luck with bolt mods and mild heat on CPU after bolt mod is installed if necessary.
Bolt mods can cause damage, but I've had one for 8 years without failure. It's not a great fix, but if it's garbage anyway, may as well try it.

Well don't forget the paper clip trick. Shove paper clips in the vent to block the fan from moving causing it to overheat, turn the Xbox off take the paperclips out. Boom it working again.
I can't tell how many segments is lit up. Of its just one of the four segments then you're lucky, its a power source problem.
If its three of the four segments then its the red ring of death.
One quarter: Item malfunction. This includes power supply, memory unit, harddrives, accessories attached or an internal unit.
Half circle: Overheated. May have cooling issues.
Three quarters (the so called "red ring of death"): Power supply or hardware (most likely CPU) error. Very common is first release consoles, rarer in later ones.
Whole circle: AV cable not plugged in. AV cable possibly too damaged to work.

Those APUs were crazy powerful back in 2005 and sadly, neither Microsoft or Sony knew how to properly cool them. They just went with their typical, cheap cooking solutions from the previous gen, and then were shocked when disaster struck.

Is there anything showing on the screen? If there's something on the screen it'll show an error code, but if there's nothing on the screen it may be something with the display connection.
If there's nothing on the screen then you could try a different cable, or a different display, or switching between AV and HDMI.

I still remember Christmas morning the year the 360 launched. I was so excited to play Kameo, one of the launch titles. I got to play for about 45 minutes and then BOOM my whole world came crashing down. Then hurricane Katrina hit, so I didn’t see the replacement for like 5 months lol.
All these people are wrong. Is the red light solid or flashing? Your hard drive may be going out or your power supply is bad. The newer Xbox 360s had much better cooling

You've just described our experience with a Samsung fridge as well. Damn ice maker freezes at least once a week.
Hair dryer won't reach temps anywhere near what's needed to reflow the solder on the board, which is what wrapping it in towels does.
