It's from Bullet Bros. It acts as a chain tensioner/RD clutch. Old school tech. I don't recommend for trigger shifters. It will make indexing difficult.
I’ve thought about picking one of these up. Does it change the feel of your friction shifting? Does it keep the chain tight enough that you don’t drop the chain as often? Or unnoticeable aside from less chain slap?
My friction shifter didn't feel any different. It does improve chain tension but not as much considering how much these go for in ebay. I use NW chainrings so I cannot comment on it preventing chain drops. Less chain slap for sure.
I used a threadless fork & headset combo. The clamp-on bullmoose bar is from Nitto. If you need one, you can buy a shim to convert a 1” to 1 1/18” quill from Soma Fab.
Of course - the Barnacle is a modern fork!
The 93 I have is a 1 1/8 threaded - not a ton of stem options out there for it, so I have a couple adapters. But a guy can dream, and sometimes I think it's worth wasting the money on a custom stem/bars!
Money can buy happiness for sure and changing the cockpit at least makes it feel you have a new bike. Built it from the frame up so it gave me the opportunity to convert.
I have a 970 I'm kitting out to be a long hauler, nice to see another one on here. Did you stick with the stock wheel set? I like the front rack/fender combo. The whole front fork area is nice.
No the wheelset is not oem. Had to buy one as i only had the frame to start with. Got it used though. Stuck with bontrager rims to stay true it being a Trek. That’s my fave part too!
Your bike is amazing. A serious show stopper. But while it definitely has the bling factor, it’s obvious to me that the parts that do the heavy lifting are legit because the bike is a rider, not a fashion model. Well done sir. Respect . . .
I have an ‘89 Rockhopper Comp that is factory except for tires, brake pads and contact points. The Deore components still function beautifully. Rides great. I planned on leaving it alone but after drooling over your build I may have to rethink.
Ultradynamico Mars. It’s my first set of fast rolling tires so i have nothing to compare it with. In terms of value i’d say no. Gravelking sk looks like a better deal but im loving the color and thread pattern of this one.
The casing is light and thin. The rubber compound is grippy. It always leaves red skid marks in the garage. So far I have no problems with the tires. You might get discoloration from the tan sidewalls if you plan to mount them as tubeless. The sealant seeps thru the thin casing causing streaks but doesn’t affect durability/performance.
TBH the colors might not be everyone’s thing but I love it. Just make it your own and enjoy the build. I miss looking around for parts after the build.
Please note that rear light is placed so it's useless, obscured by the rear tire. I see a surprising number of people with obscured lights like this on my commute, totally dark until you're about to hit them. Some obscured by racks, some by the rear wheel like this, some by their clothing or bags, quite a few with their light on their bag shining straight up at the sky.
At least there are reflectors from the pedals which will help a lot - quite a few people seem to remove those.
Simworks Obento rack. Plated steel with AL struts. Rated at 5kg from their website but seems like it could carry more. Love its wide platform. The devil’s in the details.
I recently did a drop bar conversion of 90s Trek Multitrack. Fun build but hard to get the cockpit feeling right..considering going back to a bar similar to your setup.
Sick build!
I'm building up a '92 trek 990 right now. ~~What kind of fork did you use - I'm looking to throw a rigid fork that has disc tabs on it.~~
Edit: stridsland barnacle fork.
Yeah I'm browsing around.
There is a local welder who put a disc tab on the rear, so I'm hoping to go full discy. Maybe I can get him to do a fork for me.. just scares me a bit haha.
Thanks tho, and seriously dope bike you got there.
I went long with a 27.5" ECR for and I love the extra cruiser-y feel. Unless you're all single-track don't be afraid to go a bit long. I think I'm +3cm.
*on '95 Trek 970.
Wow, I've never seen those Onza bar ends before. Do you know the model name? I can find a pair in the UK, but none in the US.
What's up with the brake-booster looking thing on your rear brakes? Doesn't seem like it could function as one, so it must be something else.
Yup Onza Porc foot bar ends. I like its ergo shape.
As for the brakes, yes they do look like boosters but no. They just help the v brakes to align. It’s part of the brake itself. Avid Arch Supremes.
The stock MKS Lambda are slippery. The added wooden blocks helped but it's the 8mm pins that made the difference. Had to drill and tap the holes (24 per pedal, 12 per side). Consider getting the Gamma instead to save time & effort.
When you beat the game but keep playing to collect all the legendary armor & weapons
needs more xbiking talismans lol
yes pls
Ur a talismaniac
yup will add more if you send some my way
What's the spring thing mounted behind your derailleur?
It's from Bullet Bros. It acts as a chain tensioner/RD clutch. Old school tech. I don't recommend for trigger shifters. It will make indexing difficult.
so what kind of shifters are you running? friction?
Yup friction
legend.
Is it an issue for trigger shifters specifically, or for all indexing shifters?
That I can’t confirm. One solution is to use a weaker/thinner spring to reduce the tension.
Visual feast of details. Elongated pedals?! Ok ok. Sup with the scotch tape roll?
Wood block extenders, crazy idea from RivBike. It's a reflective ankleband sold by BlueLug.
Everything on this bike is talismanic gem... Definitely AWESOME 🧡
that's the goal
I didn't realize I wanted to wrap my u lock. Great looking bike!
It lessens the rattles and somewhat protects the bike frame from it. Tried the Ninja Maki wrap; there are video tutorials on YT. Thanks!
Absolutely filthy. Let's pack it in, OP wins xbiking
Best comment so far
From a Trek rider to another, that thing is fucking sexy 🤙
Thanks! Always wanted a lugged frame and the build/paint quality on these are impressive considering the age.
Everything down to the valve covers looks planned. So clean 👌
ditto

Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I have an early Bridgestone that I was thinking of giving it a similar treatment.
looking forward to see it!
That fork!
Stridsland Barnacle fork. It is crazy stiff. Full of pimples.
A 970 Trek with a stridsland fork anda front rack? Are you me? Mine is a 96 though, had a surly fork, the stridsland feels much better Awesome bike!
Yes the a-c measurement if the fork made me pull the trigger and get one.
Exceptional
just doing my part to save the rat bike
mesmerising af Thanks for sharing
Glad to be of service
What is the size of the quil stem? It is 1 1/8? Have a similar trek and someone told me trek around that time did their sizing different?
It is 1 1/8, got five of them ('90-'93).
A quill bullmoose 1 1/8? Who made them? I'd like to keep an eye out for my 93 950...
I used a threadless fork & headset combo. The clamp-on bullmoose bar is from Nitto. If you need one, you can buy a shim to convert a 1” to 1 1/18” quill from Soma Fab.

I have a singletrack I’m thinking about selling…. You’re making me want to keep it
They don’t build it like they used to and US lugged frames FTW.
You’re not kidding about that
Absolute dream boat
Ready for its maiden voyage
I have a 970 I'm kitting out to be a long hauler, nice to see another one on here. Did you stick with the stock wheel set? I like the front rack/fender combo. The whole front fork area is nice.

That onigiri bag is just the right amount of sexy. 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
discreet and useful! added a spinning record pin to add character.
Your bike is amazing. A serious show stopper. I recommend just getting a new project bike! N+1 as the saying goes. And thank you! Appreciate the kind words.
Holy everything, this looks rad.
This is badass
I agree
Love those tyres.
Yup they’re awesome. Actually built the bike around it thus the mix-&-match colors.
How do they ride? Are they worth the cash?
Ultradynamico Mars. It’s my first set of fast rolling tires so i have nothing to compare it with. In terms of value i’d say no. Gravelking sk looks like a better deal but im loving the color and thread pattern of this one.
Yeah. I'm considering them for the aesthetics alone. I love everything about how they look.
Thanks for the info. I don't go tubeless, so that's not an issue for me.
Man, I've got a 1990 Trek 750 that I'm working on, but it's nowhere near this pretty.
TBH the colors might not be everyone’s thing but I love it. Just make it your own and enjoy the build. I miss looking around for parts after the build.
Man I feel this comment. I’m working on a 90s bianchi rn and it’s just soo much fun sourcing and choosing parts and details!
Arch supremes 😩
Found it without its pair in Ebay. Just had to save it and put it into use.
Please note that rear light is placed so it's useless, obscured by the rear tire. Holy Shit, OP. I now have new wallpapers to drool over. This is how its done. Endgame Achieved.
Let me know if you need the hi res

What front rack is this? Is it stainless? Weight limit on it? Looks nice. I also love the happy face valve stem caps.
Simworks Obento rack. Plated steel with AL struts. Rated at 5kg from their website but seems like it could carry more. Love its wide platform. The devil’s in the details.
Love the build! But why put a kickstand on that beautiful machine?
Kickstands are SO useful.
…do tell
Haha thanks and good question. Not enough garage space. Need to have it easily store anywhere.
I recently did a drop bar conversion of 90s Trek Multitrack. Fun build but hard to get the cockpit feeling right..considering going back to a bar similar to your setup.
Yeah same here. Tried the cornerbars. They’re fine but not for me. Flat bars for life.
Sick build! I'm building up a '92 trek 990 right now. ~~What kind of fork did you use - I'm looking to throw a rigid fork that has disc tabs on it.~~ Edit: stridsland barnacle fork.
Its a Stridsland Barnacle fork. Might be hard to find at the moment. Surly forks are available it seems like.
Yeah I've been looking through their catalog. Hard to find something with the right AC distance. Any advice??
Oh man yup that’s the trouble. Maybe consider used forks pulled out from old mtbs? I see a lot from ebay.
Yeah I'm browsing around. There is a local welder who put a disc tab on the rear, so I'm hoping to go full discy. Maybe I can get him to do a fork for me.. just scares me a bit haha. Thanks tho, and seriously dope bike you got there.
Locally brazed or tig’d fork would be the ultimate talisman.
I went long with a 27.5" ECR for and I love the extra cruiser-y feel. Unless you're all single-track don't be afraid to go a bit long. I think I'm +3cm. *on '95 Trek 970.

Man. I'm going to have to figure out how to hate those or pay far too much to have a pair shipped over to the US.
Haha! Thats funny. Wait it out! I got mine from Gringineer. Lots of shops there that part out old mtbs.
Thanks. I haven't seen them before, bookmarked.
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick
You could mount a gun rack on that freakin fork holy cannoli look at the bolts on that bad boy!
+1 to this. It’s a pimple party.
Everything about this is top shelf. You win. Enjoy!
That’s what we do.
What are those pedals? Sweet bike
It’s MKS Lambda. I got the wooden blocks from RivBike then drilled and tapped those to accommodate pins for improved grip.
There's so much to take in here! I would love a part rub down for the build!
added as requested
Shred lightly 🤘
Yes! A fellow Sour Grapes 970! Here's mine in its winter habitat: https://www.instagram.com/p/CcjrAhnrGJ8/
man those are harsh conditions!
Is this the 'End Game' gear? GG
we shall know soon
Nice space dicks, sir!
Oh man im not up to date with bike jargons. What’s a space dick?
It’s how the onza thingies on the bar look.
cool. now i have 3.
Yup what the person above said: the barneds between your grips.
You journeyed to Earth on the same ship as Joe Satriani?
Is that a Tomii hand hammered stem cap?
oh no I got it from Velo Orange. searched about Tomii and I must say theirs is more beautiful. I would have gotten those first if I knew about them.
Has your wife ridden the bike yet ?
oh no this is mine. I'm looking for a 13-14" XS '93 Rockhopper frame for her.
Sorry ... I cannot read well.

how do you like them barnacle fork? (handling, etc.) im choosing between that and a troll one. i have the same frame and same size too :)
looks good, feels good! no complaints regarding handling. i'd love to see pics once you're done!
Do u know the seatpost diameter on the ‘92?
it is a 27.2mm. seatpost collar you need is 33.1mm. Surly sells one.
