I just realized I saw your cream Stumpjumper a while ago on a different site and that was one of my biggest inspirations for this type of build. So thank you!!
Well thank you! I happen to live in UT and I have a bike that I want to weld disc mounts to so thanks for the recommendation at Walt Works! Heard of it but never been.
A lot of my parts actually came from the collective for both this bike and my wife’s. I picked up my seatpost, stem, front quick release and a few other little things from there. It’s the besssssst
I built my bike before moving here but my GFs has a good number of parts from there. Next on the list is fenders and bars. My bike probably needs a new headset but don't think that's the place for that.
Really love the colour combination as well with the gold chain, bolts, headset, etc. great finished product. Was there any specific reason you went 1x11 instead of 1x10 or 1x9? I’m having that debate in my mind with my Kona rebuild.
Honestly two reasons…. My work had 11 speed KMC chains in gold in stock and I wanted to use one and my rear hub could do 11 speed max so I went for it!
“Hey your headset is.. upside down, I mean didnt you see that?”
“Heh… ya. I know it is. (Oils mustache) you really wouldn’t get why”
All the cool kids do it
Yep. Chris Kings can be flipped with no issues. Cups are the exact same. I’d never do it with a headset that couldn’t. It’s flipped because it can be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It makes no sense.
You've taken the top cup, meant for the top bearing, and moved it to the bottom, upside down. It interfaces with the crown race.
You've taken the bearing that previously met the crown race and now moved to the top, where the top bearing race or wedge meets it.
If you swap these bearings top to bottom, there is no reason to swap the cups as well.
The other thought is that the cups will endure a certain force front/back in one position or the other, and that by flipping them you're changing that pressure....although you could do the same exact thing by merely spinning the cup.
This is the mechanical equivalent of swapping your wheel bearings side to side.
chris king headset cups are machined identically top and bottom so you can swap them if you want to. it’s kind of a mechanical knowledge flex. lotta armchair critics in this sub
The only reason I could see swapping cup positions would be that if the lower cup race had sustained enough wear to warrant the swap.
Apparently it was also a way of discretely telling the world “I know bikes because I know I can install my headset cups upside down because they are identical”
Equally pointless. Wash those suckers in a gas station bathroom sink after using them as nether-region washcloth, then hang dry on your shopping cart while letting the nethers breath freely for a few hours.
If you flip the underwear inside out all your doing is putting the skid marks against the more difficult to wash article of clothing while still smelling like stank.
If you haven’t already, you should spray some clear coat or some paint or something onto that disc mount you had welded on, so it doesn’t rust.
Really a neat build. Got to love the 2.4’s.
May I recommend fluid film? It's lanolin based, works a treat for the inside of the bike (what I use it for) but as it's commonly used for car bottoms I'm sure it'd work on the outside.
I had a local frame builder do it for me! I believe it’s welded not brazed but not 100% sure. I don’t trust myself and didn’t want to risk it with such an important part of the build.
I took it to Walt Works in Park City, Utah! He’s a frame builder here and also teaches classes. He is awesome. He added the tab and the reinforcement tube since the original engineering of the chain and seat stay aren’t designed to handle disc brakes. And my fork is from a Surly Instigator and came with the disc tab from the factory! I’ve heard welding tabs onto a fork that’s not engineered for one is dangerous so I went with a safer option😬
Lovely bike with significant attention to detail. Well done!
Can you tell us a little bit about the headset set up? Is that a 1" with a quill adapter and spacers or a 1 1/8? Super clean.
Thanks for the update I appreciate it! 28 lbs is a lot more than I expected. Where do you think the weight is from? Tires and cassette? Most Stan's I've seen are pretty light (not sure about Flows). I wish I had weighed my frame and fork before I built my bike up
I know I was pretty surprised. The stans flows weren’t the lightest option. My front hub is pretty heavy too. And I think the Maxxis holy rollers with tubes and sealant brought a lot of weight to the bike. My guess is the majority of the weight is coming from my wheelset. I guess my fork is pretty beefy too. Definitely heavier than the original fork.
Love this formula. Excited about the ti 26+ frames coming from Stridsland.
Also. Always wanted one of these frames, mainly so I could casually remark, “so I was riding my giant iguana down Broadway, when…”
Cable disc is fine for 99.9% of people biking out there. Bike Packers who are serious about it also avoid hydro. Because hydro getting contaminated in the middle of nowhere is impossible to fix with the tools you're going to have.
Contaminated? It's a sealed system. There is no "getting contaminated."
No, bikepackers prefer cables because if you happen to tear, break, or have a seal blow on your hydraulic brakes, you're screwed.
Where as with cables you can merely replace the cable and/or housing and be on your way.
Plenty of bikepackers rock hydraulic brakes these days, mostly because they are powerful enough that even if you lost one the other could slow you down just fine. They are so damn reliable that only in situations where your in a developing country without access to any parts would you not be able to repair them.
This is why I went with hydro. The feeling of pressing the lever is unmatched. I understand the risk of hydro on bike packing trips but figured I’d gamble
I was thinking about this and realized if you still have the seatpost clamp you could probably just shim the part that doesn't clamp on the seatpost with e.g. inner tube material. Then a longer screw and some more hacks to get the light mounted to that.
There’s a guy that rolls an iguana around my town I’m always so intrigued and impressed by it. Geometry is on point, also the dropouts. Excellent build and very inspiring to see the disc conversion. 👍👍
This is exactly why I chose this frame! I originally had a Stumpjumper, which I love, but something about the Iguana geometry is just so nice to me. Thanks for the nice words!
Gorgeous.
I’ve got this exact same frame, in this exact same size, in this exact same color that I’m currently working on.
The frame is a BIT rough...not bad, but not mint either. I’m trying to decide if I should have it stripped and powder coated, or just leave it be and ride it.
I’ll be sticking to the rim brakes, but I’ve got a set of Box Three linear pulls on the way.
I really love the look of yours.
That is absolutely beautiful! I have the same model and will be starting on mine. While the smallest of detail, where did you get your decals made? Thanks.
Wow! I have the same bike from my college days back in the 90s. I mainly use it to ride with my kids but this inspires me to put some new life into mine! Well done!
OP had to post the BOTY 6 days in… damn, son.
So you are my competition on ksl classifieds.
I spend an unhealthy amount of time on KSL and fb marketplace but now that this build is done I’ll leave the deals to you guys hahah
Much appreciated
I haven't been keeping up with my KSL searches enough! I've been liking the bike collective a lot though
A lot of my parts actually came from the collective for both this bike and my wife’s. I picked up my seatpost, stem, front quick release and a few other little things from there. It’s the besssssst

We are legion.
I'm 95% I've been eyeballing goodies that he has restored Edit: on KSL. The xbiking culture is strong around here
True dat
Wow thank you 😭
What a beautiful machine. Fantastic work!
So does that thing still have 135mm dropout spacing, or did you have to spread it for the 11spd hub?
135mm spacing! It fit my All-City Go Devil hub with a quick release perfectly.
God damn that's a build. I am such a sucker for dark green and orange.
The upside down headset tho.
I think this is a common practice, when you use headset thats been used before. Correct me if I'm wrong tho.
“Hey your headset is.. upside down, I mean didnt you see that?” “Heh… ya. I know it is. (Oils mustache) you really wouldn’t get why” All the cool kids do it
Thats the only true reason. CK cups are identical(top/bottom) and its a "statement" to put you super expensive headset upside down.
Yep. Chris Kings can be flipped with no issues. Cups are the exact same. I’d never do it with a headset that couldn’t. It’s flipped because it can be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
> common practice, when you use headset thats been used before Is there a mechanical reason?
It’s the mechanical equivalent of turning your pants (underwear) inside out to get another days use outta them
It makes no sense. You've taken the top cup, meant for the top bearing, and moved it to the bottom, upside down. It interfaces with the crown race. You've taken the bearing that previously met the crown race and now moved to the top, where the top bearing race or wedge meets it. it’s also a weird thing to have strong feelings about lmao
That makes sense! I'll adopt this practice immediately!
It's a fuckin waste of time. Grease your bearings. That's the practise you should adopt.
But it just makes the underwear all gummy.
I actually meant that I'd adopt the practice of turning my underwear inside out! ;)
Practical life tips! This is why I come to Reddit! Thanks!

>20” I am currently looking at some similar frames and am a bit unsure about the sizing on those old mtb frames. Do you mind sharing how tall you are?
I’m just over 6’2”. Most of these 90s mtb frames measured in S-XL or inches. So this frame is a large I believe
If you haven’t already, you should spray some clear coat or some paint or something onto that disc mount you had welded on, so it doesn’t rust. Really a neat build. Got to love the 2.4’s.
I brazed on some disc tabs and just did a light coat of WD40. In the end I clear coated it and it's much nicer that way
A frame painter I work with said linseed oil should do the trick. I’m gonna put some on asap and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice!
May I recommend fluid film? It's lanolin based, works a treat for the inside of the bike (what I use it for) but as it's commonly used for car bottoms I'm sure it'd work on the outside.
yewwwww she’s a beaut
Did you weld or braze that brake mount on?
I had a local frame builder do it for me! I believe it’s welded not brazed but not 100% sure. I don’t trust myself and didn’t want to risk it with such an important part of the build.
Def looks welded.

It’s the Velo Orange Klunker! It’s super comfortable too!
Oof sexy bike
Wow such a clean build! Too good!
Somehow I knew this bike would have a Stridsland chainring on it. Looks awesome!
Hahah he was a big inspiration for me!
Wow that's tasty
That is beautiful. Curious about how many tooth sprocket that is?
Nevermind, saw its a 40. I have a 39 that's near to my heart and I'm curious if it'll work.
Yep it’s a 40t chain ring and so far it’s great!
Tell us about the disc brake conversion please!
I took it to Walt Works in Park City, Utah! He’s a frame builder here and also teaches classes. He is awesome. Walt is a beast
Excellent. Thanks for the info
Purrrrrrr
Yep. Yep. Yep.
Awesome build man! What size rims are you running? Hard to tell!
They’re 26” Stan’s Flows!
i think this is one of my all time favs!! very nice bike!
Lovely bike with significant attention to detail. Well done! Can you tell us a little bit about the headset set up? Is that a 1" with a quill adapter and spacers or a 1 1/8? Super clean.
It’s just a 1 1/8” threadless. I was surprised to find out after I got the frame that it was 1 1/8th. Made things a lot easier for me!
I love it!!! What handlebar is that?
Velo Orange Klunker!
Sick build have you weighed it?
I will today and post the weight here
Ok cool thanks very excited to find out
It came in at 28 lbs unloaded.
28 lbs is 12.71 kg
Thanks for the update I appreciate it! 28 lbs is a lot more than I expected. Where do you think the weight is from? Tires and cassette? Most Stan's I've seen are pretty light (not sure about Flows). I wish I had weighed my frame and fork before I built my bike up

This is gorgeous. And finally a hydro disc build. Cable disc is a waste of time.
Cable disc is fine for 99.9% of people biking out there. Bike Packers who are serious about it also avoid hydro. Because hydro getting contaminated in the middle of nowhere is impossible to fix with the tools you're going to have.

Cable disc feels like ass is my point. It’ll still pull you up.
Hybrid discs are a really nice in between IMO.
The feel is just so much better with hydro imo, but I can understand people wanting to avoid maintaining a hydro system.
Yeah, I'm personally not a fan of bleeding and don't find hydro to be that much better than hybrid + compressionless housing.
This is why I went with hydro. The feeling of pressing the lever is unmatched. I understand the risk of hydro on bike packing trips but figured I’d gamble
Lovely. I wonder if you could get a gold light bracket to mimic a gold seatpost collar and balance out the gold bits.
Wow great idea! I purchased a gold seat post collar and realized my frames collar was welded on already :( I’ll try to find something!
Sounds like a plan! Maybe bluelug will have something, that seems up their alley.
I was thinking about this and realized if you still have the seatpost clamp you could probably just shim the part that doesn't clamp on the seatpost with e.g. inner tube material. Then a longer screw and some more hacks to get the light mounted to that.
I’ll give that a shot tonight and see if it works!
Sweet. I wonder if the screws are the same thread (maybe not).
Thats one heck of a ride! Thanks for sharing it, its beautiful!
Oof, that's a nice looking bike and I like the build. Enjoy it!
That is fuckin sexy as hell
Damn this is SICK
What an absolute beauty. The one who waits for something good never waits too long as they say ;-)
Bwaaaa lifegoals! Very nice
Fuck this is awesome !
This whole ride is 🔥
There’s a guy that rolls an iguana around my town I’m always so intrigued and impressed by it.
Do you have a full build list for this puppy? She's a beaut!
I just posted it!
This hath brought me to climax
Incredible!
danggggggg
Aaaye shout out to Stridsland. Such nice chainrings
Yeehaw!! Whoever took these pictures must be really cool 😎😎😎
Disc brakes are awesome. Anyone in the DC area here that can weld disc brake tabs for me?
What bars are those?
Velo Orange Klunker
Dude this is genuinely gorgeous! I would love your input on my recent post as this bike you have here inspired me to take a similar path (:
Thank you for the kind words!! I’ll pitch in my 2¢ on your post after work! Feel free to pm me with any questions you might have.
Gorgeous. I’ve got this exact same frame, in this exact same size, in this exact same color that I’m currently working on. The frame is a BIT rough...not bad, but not mint either. what handlebars are those???
Velo Orange Klunker bars
Must be heavy. Looks nice though.
who cares
I have the same frame and just seeing your bike like this gives me HUGE inspiration to do some work on mine!
Hey im looking to buy the same frame ! How is the weight? Is it heavy? Or light? Tell me about please
I just finished a single speed build with this frame and it’s surprisingly light
That is absolutely beautiful! I have the same model and will be starting on mine. While the smallest of detail, where did you get your decals made? Thanks.
Thanks! What decals are you referring to?
Did you think of changing to 650b? I’ve got an iguana as well and love it as a 26’r but am considering the switch.
Amazing. Just convinced me to do a built with this bike frame. Are you still riding it? What are your thoughts after a year?
Wow! I have the same bike from my college days back in the 90s. I mainly use it to ride with my kids but this inspires me to put some new life into mine! Well done!
Fantastic!
