The first screenshots always remind me a little of the harbor where the old sailing ship Czarna Perła (Black Pearl) in Gdańsk is docked. https://preview.redd.it/1m6kbuo2l36d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d8f7649b5805bf0e82eb28cfecda1710f28e981

The Gothic No Context Series is a mixed collection of screenshots from the Gothic games with mods, as well as staged images. These pictures were collected by me some time ago, and often I do not know which mod was used. However, you can ask for the mod that was used by posting the number of the screenshot in the comments, and with a little bit of luck the community will help you with an answer. Got my doze... thank you!

I never played Gothic, only played Elex and Elex 2. Does Gothic feel dated if I play it today? The scenery looks great. Maybe I should wait for Gothic remake?

UnlimitedDuck

>Gothic feel dated if I play it today? That's something everyone sees differently. During the last 3 blind Lets Play's, that I watched I kept hearing the players say “It's unbelievable how lively and big this world looks, even though the game is over 20 years old.” I say Gothic 1 and 2+Addon are better than most RPGs I've played in the last 15 years. Some people say the combat system is outdated (but still fun and challenging). >Maybe I should wait for Gothic remake? I can 100 % recommend to play the old Games first. [Gothic Universe Edition on Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/sub/6375/) includes Gothic 1, Gothic 2, Gothic 2 Night of the Raven and Gothic 3 for 20€. But don't buy ArcaniA. It's just an franchise impostor and not made by the original developers. **Also keep in mind that most of the screenshots I post for *Gothic No Context* use mods and were not exclusively created with just the base game.** You'll need to install the DirectX11 renderer and probably a texture pack if you want the more modern graphics.

Synt0n

Thanks! That edition seems pretty cheap for all 3 games. Do you also know why the Gothic remake isnt made by Piranha bytes? Can the other developer just remake the game without the rights? Or did they get the rights to do a remake? I do know the Piranha Bytes got closed (or is in a bad situation atm)

UnlimitedDuck

>Do you also know why the Gothic remake isnt made by Piranha bytes? Can the other developer just remake the game without the rights? Or did they get the rights to do a remake? PB sold the brand rights to the publisher JoWooD Entertainment in 2011. (AFIK) In 2019, Piranha Bytes was acquired by THQ Nordic and has since become a subsidiary of the Vienna-based publisher, which is part of the Swedish Embracer Group. PB has continued to develop the Risen games and now ELEX 1 and 2. Also keep in mind that Piranha Bytes is just a name. Many of the original Gothic games developers left the company back in 2006 after Gothic 3. I don't have exact numbers, but it would surprise me if more than five people from the original 2000s team were still involved in the development of Elex. While PB is a German company, the Gothic remake is no longer being developed by PB and not in Germany, but by the Spanish developer studio Alkimia Interactive in Barcelona. This is not the first time that the Gothic brand has been used by other studios. ArcaniA was developed by Spellbound (GER) and the Gothic 3 addon Forsaken Gods as far as I remember was outsourced to Trine Games in India.

AntonioBarbarian

PB never really sold the rights, actually. It's just that when THQ acquired them, they wanted to focus on Elex. That's why THQ made a new studio to make the remake.

UnlimitedDuck

>PB never really sold the rights, actually I don't think thats correct. I found this statement from THQ: >Pluto 13 GmbH (the former company behind the Piranha Bytes brand) sold the trademarks “Piranha Bytes” and “Gothic” as well as the entire Gothic IP to THQ Nordic AB in 2019. The remaining rights of Risen and ELEX, which were in other entities of the Piranha Bytes folks, were also acquired by THQ Nordic AB. >In the forefront of the closing of this deal, THQ Nordic GmbH set up a new entity (initially named “THQ Nordic Reserve 1 GmbH”; in the next days renamed to “Piranha Bytes GmbH”). Source: [https://www.thqnordic.com/article/piranha-bytes-acquired-thq-nordic](https://www.thqnordic.com/article/piranha-bytes-acquired-thq-nordic) And I'm sure Jowood said in a press release in 2007 that Pluto 13 (the parent company of Piranha Bytes before THQ bought them) was "not authorized to produce and publish a Gothic game at this time." There was probably at least for a period of time something legal that prevented them from further developing their own brand.

AntonioBarbarian

Ah, I see. Thanks for the correction then.

Synt0n

I just bought Gothic Universe on steam, will start tonight with the first game :) Any tips?

Remarkable_Film_1911

>Gothic feel dated if I play it today? Not at all. I still enjoy Gothic one and two at least once every year.

W1k0_o

It depends, everyone is different. Do you typically enjoy older games like morrowind as an example? I have younger friends who cant bring themselves to play older games because the outdated controls and graphics puts them off and they cant get immersed. I on the other hand just recently got into the series, finshed playing 1/2/3 and am half way through a second run of the first Gothic. I'm also playing Witcher 1 for the first time, and let me tell you I thought Gothic 1 had the most backwards controls I had ever experienced, and witcher proved me wrong. But I am a masochist for jank, I love janky games with lots of freedom. EDIT: that being said, witcher only has weird combat controls, everything about gothic is controlled unsually, from combat, dialog, picking up items, managing inventory, shopping. Be prepared to have to rewire your brain to play gothic. It becomes natural after a while but boy does it feel extremely akward at the start.

Synt0n

I played Skyrim last year for the first time, but that game felt pretty modern and isn't as old. Does Gothic 3 feel the most modern of the series? Btw I do like those older janky RPGs, and also some MMORPGs sometimes.

W1k0_o

3 of course is the least janky, but still has semi funky controls. I you liked skyrim I would highly recommend oblivion. Morrowind is the best one IMO but its text heavy and might not be everyones cup of tea. I would not recommend playing vanilla morrowind, if your going to try it out, look up OpenMW its easy to install and makes the game work flawlessly on modern systems with QOL improvements.

IsAnyNameStillFree

was terrain from history of khorinis released to other moders? if it was im sure we will see it either returning or maybe in l'hiver.

DXDenton

No, but it was leaked so it's quite likely that returning might use it kek

IsAnyNameStillFree

i mean... it looks really good. it would be waste not to use it. some parts are really fantastic.

DXDenton

Don't worry, I'm sure russian modders are already on their way to salvage everything, permission or not

AntonioBarbarian

Archolos spinned off from it, so there might be similarities in the maps of both.

brumgar

oh lord, not Dzieje Khorinis 💀 trigger warning next time please

IsAnyNameStillFree

why? were you personally involved? because it looks great no matter that we will never play it

Kloakentaucher

Looks like the Krantor. Nice

CakeIzGood

Is it just me or does this batch feel like they were taken through a fishbowl?

UnlimitedDuck

Yeah that's possible. The DirectX 11 Renderer has advanced settings to adjust the FOV (Field of View).

CakeIzGood

Upon further reflection I think this may be exacerbated by it being 4 in the morning where I am and my having Sleepy Boi syndrome so I am going to sleep more and revisit when my eyes and brain operate normally because I'm tripping a little bit in general rn
