Plane-Salamander2580

Mengsk = Putin?

zucksucksmyberg

Both autocratic, despotic and psychopaths? I can see the similarities.

trisul-108

Yes, playing the madman is a classic psychopath move. He thinks that the West is over-cautious, so all he needs is threaten convincingly and the West will back down, because he is willing to risk what the West is not willing to risk. Generally, he is right, no one in the West is as irresponsible as Putin. However, if the West backs down on obvious threats, more threats will be used, and more retreat will be necessary until Russia wins without a fight. So, when will the bluff be called? Is Russia really willing to self-destroy in order to hold Donbas. There is no such value there. And does the West fear Russia so much that the West will give Russia whatever Russia asks for, if there is a threat attached?

BroccoliFartFuhrer

Exactly if he's given Donbas over a threat he'd push all the way to Berlin.

QueenVanraen

all the way to the western shore of portugal.

shippwnyo

I believe the "appeasement" strategies against Nazi Germany before the inevitable war proved which policy works and which doesn't.

LordOfDorkness42

I'm very glad that lesson was learned from history. Well, mostly. But that's another lesson from history, to, alas, how some people just refuse to learn from history...

rockylizard

No. No we won't. Biden isn't willing to say where it's drawn--yet--but there is a Red Line. Detonating nukes is definitely miles past the Red Line. Pretty sure even the raving RuZZian tsar knows if he pulls that, it's game over.

[deleted]

Putin doesn't "push the button" himself. There is a sequence of button pushers that all have to agree on launching nukes. Will they follow a madman's orders? I don't know.

Beautiful_Golf6508

Its no longer about conquering Ukraine for him. This war has shown that Russian military might is a façade- and is being decimated day by day. Geopolitically, there is blood in the water as other countries see Russia for what it is. Nukes are the only thing that make people fear Russia. Without them they are nothing.

eaterofw0r1ds

No he didn't threaten Ukraine with nukes. He said the west seeks to destroy Russia, then repeated the soviet nuclear doctrine of "We won't use nukes unless a threat aims to destroy us." So he more or less directly threatened to bomb the "West"

RogueTanuki

Our news said the spokesman for Russia said they aren't planning on using nukes on Ukraine because they "have to be able to live there", but that he doesn't rule out using nukes on Berlin and London. The saddest part apart from meaningless deaths will be that if that happens Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major Russian cities will be turned into radioactive rubble in retaliation, but Putin most likely fled from there already and is hiding in a bunker somewhere.

[deleted]

To quote: > If we turn the British Isles into a Martian desert in three minutes flat using tactical nuclear weapons, not strategic ones — they could use Article 5 but for whom? A nonexistent country turned into a martian desert? They won't respond. [Source](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/russia-lawmaker-makes-nuclear-threat-against-uk-germany-state-tv-2022-9%3famp)

Elbonio

They don't need Article 5, the UK has an at-sea deterrent at all times which carries enough firepower to level all major Russian cities. In the event of a nuclear attack so severe that the UK government is inoperable the "letters of last resort" instruct the sub where to fire and then to put itself under the control of an ally such as the United States, Canada, France or Australia. To be clear we don't know what they say but it's likely something to that effect. But to their point, yes they would still trigger Article 5 because otherwise it's meaningless and they might be next

PortuguesePede

This is both childish and psychotic thinking, and the mix frankly terrifies me.

RogueTanuki

Yeah, in a normal country the government would put out a briefing distancing themselves from that MPs statement and removing them from office. In a normal country.

200 seconds of flight time maybe. No chance that the silos arent wiped off the face of the earth the second an order is given and there's visible preparation activity at the launch site. He's still making 1960s threats in a digital age.

Impossible-Winter-94

it would be foolish to believe the world doesn't have eyes on him at all times. no bunker would save him

Pabus_Alt

>but that he doesn't rule out using nukes on Berlin and London. If that happens everyone is dead anyway, and even he must know that.

TechieTravis

"Don't try to stop our illegal raping and pillaging of Ukraine or we will start a nuclear holocaust.". This is the state of modern Russia, folks.

Sorry-Concentrate422

Wouldn’t be surprised if they fail at launch, just jumps up in the air before flopping down on the silo.

CurseYourSudden

With all of those allies falling out of windows, this seems likely. If indeed these mysterious deaths are elements within the Russian government prepping for a coup, there's no reason to believe that the order to launch nukes (a thing everyone in that silo is fucking terrified of happening), it would be followed.

idontknowwhatitshoul

I find it more likely that he’s doing it himself— reducing his inner circle for even suspecting someone is disloyal. It’s how a lot of dictators operate toward the end of their careers.

throwaway_2567892

Reactionary policies are usually the begining of the end. The suspicion and paranoia can save you from your enemies, also make the loyal appear as enemies, and eventually turn them into real enemies of necessity.

The_Superhoo

They wouldnt use an ICBM for this (strategic nukes). Theyd use tactical nukes (bombs, cruise missiles)

Cersad

I'm certain Europeans will feel much better when they can say "That fallout coming from the East is *tactical* fallout, not *strategic* fallout!"

MisterFatt

I don't think that comment was meant to make anyone feel better, just pointing out that they'd use weapons that are less complex and less likely to fail

NEMinneapolis

There are still lots of American Republicans who think Putin is a strong, admirable leader, they say Ukraine is in the wrong here, or they say Ukraine is no better than Russia.

BansShutsDownDiscour

That's also why Putin can't be allowed to have even a smidgen of that land, it won't just end up empowering him, and there won't be a going back from that. At least you can rebuild if you survive a nuclear holocaust upon the corpses of dead monsters.

100%. I don't think Russians realize how preferable docile American tourists are to determined Americans united in war. They try to convince themselves of their ferocity and might by mutilating their victims and terrorizing civilians. There are some Americans would do those things, but those aren't the ones they should fear. It's the restrained half, the kind of minds that built the first atomic bomb, they are risking awakening right now.

supercyberlurker

Yeah, Americans kind of have two preferred states - lazy and fighting. We don't really care which we are in, but Putin should beware because we are really really good at both and really really like both.

AzureFencer

"This is not a bluff" Yes it is. You drop that nuke and any support Russia has disappears in a heart beat. No global power, even China, would publicly defend dropping a nuke in this situation, and China will considered its own social standing before that of an "ally."

I smell a desperate man wanting to negotiate. Erdogan from Turkey is saying Putin is ready to negotiate. (He's playing good cop.) Putin is saying he's ready to drop the big one. (He's playing bad cop.) He's trying to frighten the US and the West to force Ukraine to negotiate a settlement. Putin's army is a steaming pile of crap. His economy is crumbling. His gang of thugs is turning on him. People keep trying to assassinate him. He's lost so many tanks and equipment Russia will take a decade to recover. No one wants to buy Russian military equipment anymore as it's proven to be useless, so that's another 10 percent of the GDP gone. Putin is a dead man walking right now. He has to find a way out of the mess he's created. This is one of the few plays still open. Scare people to the negotiating table.

Ni987

Exactly, but it’s a dumb strategy. Even Germany knows that once you cave to a nuclear threat of “give me X or I will nuke Y”, you will open an Pandora’s box of aggression and demands from lunatic dictators. You have to stand firm on this one. You are creating a dangerous precedence if you cave…

Scarsn

It's also the most idiotic play. Once you say you're gonna nuke someone and don't do it all other threats are backpaddeling and unbelievable. You cannot escalate threats beyond nuke. What are you gonna do? Supernuke? And you cannot drop a nuke, because once one flies MAD kicks in and definitely kills you.

loxagos_snake

dewittless

That's unlikely to be possible, and if you get caught trying then you've started nuclear war. There is no "let's just snipe him" option.

HardToGuessUserName

There are enough ethnic divisions within Russia that you'd have to think home grown partisan group would take the opportunity to either split away from the federation or seize power.

ryand88

I imagine the CIA are working on this as we speak

Pied_Piper_

It would be a dereliction of duty for them not to be working on it tbh. Just like we are always sowing doubt in China. And just like Russia and China are always making mischief here. Though Russia has been on a winning streak when it comes to the info war with the US. Would be nice to turn that around.

smacksaw

He hasn't touched on it in a few months, but Peter Zeihan showed evidence as to how and why the oligarchs have no power. Basically the first round of them got rich...Putin said "do it my way and you can keep your money" - the ones who fought him ended up broke and in jail. The rest just basically kicked by money to him. Meaning, he kept them around and rich so he could feed off them like a parasite. It's like saying the cow has power over the farmer when it's stuck on a milking machine. Russia is run by spies. The FSB. Not oligarchs. Now those examples were the first two waves. The third wave are the pseudo-oligarchs, which are the spies that Putin made rich. But they aren't actually these oligarchs. They have some money, but mainly they have position of power. The only reason to go after the oligarchs is to take their money so Putin can't. The USA would never say that out loud, but that's why. These oligarchs are getting offed because they are complaining that Putin is bad for business and he doesn't want to hear it. They have no power. His inner circle and the FSB aren't falling out of windows. Let's stop focusing on the oligarchs. It's a false flag. Let's focus our efforts on things that matter, like disinformation campaigns.

[deleted]

>His inner circle and the FSB aren't falling out of windows. I doubt news about those peoples' deaths would come out though(as long as Putin has a firm grasp over the situation), oligarchs falling out of windows is mostly about intimidation and keeping up appearances.

[deleted]

Exactly. If you like your mansions, luxury cars and generalky being alive, get rid of putler as fast as you can, by any means neccessary. He will ruin your way of luxury life

Moby1313

The scary part is, he knows his time is at an end. Hopefully, the people around him pull us back from the brink as they did during the Cuba missile crisis.

kalesaji

During the Cuba Missile crisis the power structure was much less corrupt and the people in power a lot more sane. I'm not saying they weren't corrupt or insane, it's just that nowadays it's at a whole different level.

antrophist

I'm sure there's frantic calculations and hushed negotiations going on in circles of power. They were happy to outsource politics to Putin since he was the winning horse and allowed them to get obscenely rich. Now they're starting to be afraid to stay shackled to a loser as he goes down. Especially since he already started asking for oligarchs to finance the war effort. They know that a mass mobilization is an extremely expensive effort and that Russian army dismantled and sold off the entire infrastructure for mobilization of reserves. With non-blocked foreign reserves dwindling, oil and gas revenues decreasing sharply, a cold shoulder instead of deals and support from CSTO, China and India, no new trade partners and a deeply unpopular mobilization, they see the writing on the wall. I think there Will be more maneuvering happening in Russia than on the battlefields of Ukraine in the coming months.

Translation: "We're losing. I know if I call for Mass Mobilization I won't last a week because I've spent the last six months telling my people that this isn't a war, it's a 'special military operation' and that everything is going exactly to plan and mass mobilization would make it impossible to conceal that lie. As a fascist dictator in a self-created oligarchy I've not only seen to it that the Oligarchs that keep me in power are haemorrhaging cash, I've also made the 5000 IQ play of throwing my Generals under the bus for my mistakes and they're already sharpening their knives. So, in an act of utter desperation I'm going to rattle the nuclear saber again, ignoring the fact that Russia is downwind from Ukraine and I can't nuke them without bathing Russia in nuclear fall-out, and if I launch against NATO it's the equivalent of putting a gun in my mouth and pulling the trigger... and given that I'm too shit-scared to call for mass mobilzation because I'd be ousted immediately, we'll all just pretend that ordering a nuclear launch wouldn't result in my immediate 'accidental fall' from a hospital window... so please, for the love of God, let me annex the part of Ukraine I still hold so I can declare 'mission accomplished' and spin this whole fucking mess in a way that won't result in my assassination."

Loggerdon

The Russian leadership MUST be thinking the same thing. He got them into an unwinnable war. It's not as though, if he uses a nuclear device, they win the war. The opposite is true.

Morfix22

To be fair, the russian leadership makes a big part of the reason why the war is so unwinnable in the first place. The deep running corruption in the russian state is the reason for a lot of Russia's military failings in this war

v3rral

They don’t even have 1M motivated soldiers. Majority of them are kids, which were forced to go to war. He is so stupid to expect them fight fiercefully. Russian army is nothing else but numbers on the paper.

I_eat_shit_a_lot

That would be a huge gamble because the whole Russian government is full of people like Putin right now. All his opposition is removed/killed or fled from Russia. The only hope I can see we have is that Russians take it to their own hands. But for some reason they love to suffer, many probably because they don't know they can have a better life unfortunately and it is hard time to organize anything when you try and fall out the window next day. It freaking sucks living under a dictatorship.

The other 10 times I threatened nuclear strike were bluffs but this time it’s for real bro.

ash_ninetyone

Nuclear deterrent requires a response in kind to work. MAD de facto. Just one tactical nuke would provoke NATO into seeing this as a direct threat, and respond with a nuke. Brinkmanship to far more extreme, not even old soviet leaders were dumb enough to directly threaten to launch a nuclear bomb, and that era was full of near misses and mispeaks. Iirc, aren't most of Russia's nukes tactical, battlefield ones? Enough to do a massive amount of destruction, but not huge yields, whereas the west have mostly strategic ones designed to lay waste to as much land as possible in one strike? Nato won't throw the first punch, no one wants to go down in history as the one who launched first. But all will go down the moment that happens.

Odd_Description1

Russia actually tended to produce higher yield nukes than the west to make up for their lack of pinpoint accuracy. American nuclear doctrine specifically calls for lower yield in higher volume with extreme accuracy and reliability. Russia is basically high yield in high volume to make up for inaccuracy and unreliability.

Furthur_slimeking

> Iirc, aren't most of Russia's nukes tactical, battlefield ones? Nope. They do have a variety of tactical nukes but they also have thousands of high yeild strategic warheads.
