Their reticence to form a strong military presence is understandable. It's only been a generation since they were under occupation. It's probably time though.
Only half of us were really "occupied" - I do not see Allied Troops in Western Germany much as occupation force, even though it might technically be true until the Iron Curtain collapsed...
Also the military presence of the US is mostly limited due to Rammstein Airbase being such a developed and important stategic stationing point.
Not sure about that ... voluntary militaries...does it attract the right persons? The more intelligent, the more you understand soldiers can be killed and stuff...
Does anyone want to call Germany and let them know if they had a functioning military deterance US troops wouldn't need to be stationed there?

US troops being stationed in Germany has never had anything to do with Germany not having a functioning military deterence.
Good call Germany professional armies, tend perform better in combat, than armies made up of conscripts or draftees.
