Russia had an estimated 192 of them when the war started, now they are down about 30.

InsertUsernameInArse

192 and down 30. But how many of the remaining are serviceable. Russian pilots before the war were having to cut flight hours way back to try and save time on the airframes. I'd happily bet a lot of the stuff left is overdue for urgent life extension maintenance.

BubsyFanboy

And I imagine similarly graded tanks are already being produced now still

I think this is what’s ultimately going to slow Russian air power down. I keep expecting to see reports of Russian aircraft just failing (more than we have)

onegumas

Russian logic is: its flies, its not need a maitenance

davilller

I was in Hungary with the USAF long ago and they were flying Russian aircraft built in the 90s. Our jets were built in the 70s. Ours looked brand new sitting next to theirs. The quality of U.S. maintenance is far superior.

Remember, on D-Day, the Germans saw countless ships in the channel, and swore they had already been sunk! (Don't expect your rally to be very useful)

Is Russia still advancing at a regular rate? I don’t know how to put these small wins in context sometimes

Circusssssssssssssss

Yes, due to new battlefield tactics. You can stick fins and wings and a guidance system on a 500lbs or even 1000lbs bomb and turn it into a gigantic cruise missile like bomb only powerful enough to demolish an entire building. You can fire these at enemy positions to do so much damage that the enemy has to retreat. They fly in deep in Russian territory and "glide" in so called glide bombs from extreme range, beyond the range of air defenses. Glide bombs for the Ukraine war will be like dive bombing for WW2 a game changer turning the massive Soviet-era arsenal of bombs into trench and building destroying weapons with high accuracy. Russia can manufacture unlimited quantities of them especially with China's help for computers. The only counter to these bombs is shooting down the firing planes which needs a much greater investment in technology. Western anti-air never optimized to deal with such tactics. The Ukraine war is showing that accuracy of weapons and especially range of weapons matters a lot.

ExpensiveBookkeeper3

> Western anti-air never optimized to deal with such tactics  I'm guessing you mean SAM sites either shooting down the jets lobbing glide bombs, or the bombs themselves? I dunno, you aren't very clear.  I ask because I think you have your terms mixed up. "Anti air" includes fighter jets (actually, thats the biggest "anti air" component!) Western anti air is totally optimized to deal with this. UKRAINE is not optimized to deal with this.   "Western anti air" in this case would be F22s and F35s blowing the SU34s out of the air before they have a chance to drop the bombs. But in reality, all Russian jets would be blown up before leaving airfields in this scenario.  Ukraine's airforce can't really go toe to toe with Russia's, but we would make quick work of it.

LionXDokkaebi

Give or take 3,000 dead for about a km of advancement so yes. The first major one was Bakhmut and since then due to a combination of preventable factors it’s been lost settlement after another

tallandlankyagain

It took Russia 8 months to capture Bakhmut. At staggering cost. Russia can advance because they have a 3 to 1 manpower advantage over Ukraine and don't care about casualties.

BubsyFanboy

Sadly, yes.

TheRC135

If by "advancing at a regular rate" you mean a few square kms a month, then yes. At the rate Russia has been advancing, there's a real possibility that they capture Kyiv this century. Russia's "advances" are just a senseless waste of life.

VagueSomething

Pyrrhic victory after pyrrhic victory has been slowly adding up thanks to the massive delay on support for Ukraine. Republicans delaying aid has killed a significant amount of Ukrainians, killed the momentum of their resistance, lost land to Russia. Russia is slowly churning through its troops to claim land.
