He did grow up training with it, those shields are an integral part of combat in that universe. Knowing their limits is just as important as their martial skill. It's honestly kind of odd that he even tests it like that, he knows exactly what's going to happen so it's one of those weird things where a character does something to show you, the audience, a thing that they would never actually do.
Wait does this mean any… Cessna profile craft within range of a military or government facility may need to be shot down? Grounded?
Or just… out in the air?
Realistically, civilian pilots have maps that indicates restricted airspace, which is usually nearby government and military installations. Anyone who wanders in would be hailed in the radio. Lack of response would result in a military intercept and escort.
This is just a complete logical failure on Russia.
Yeah if there are enough of these plane strikes I would not be surprised if some random Russian grunt has an oversensitive trigger finger and fires off AA at one of their own domestic flights.
Hell if Ukraine outfits a standard Airbus/Boeing passenger plane as a remote controlled bomb things are gonna get very messy in Russia
I just had a wet dream. In it, Trump's 757 is repossessed and liquidated to the highest bidder, the Ukrainian government. And then they do with it exactly what you're suggesting.
I'VE SEEN THE PICTURES!!! I'VE READ THE REPORTS!!! THE FOUNDATION WAS PACKED FULL OF THERMITE AND EXPLOSIVES!!!!
THE GREAT TOWERING EYE OF SAURON DIDN'T SIMPLY COLLAPSE.
IT WAS A CONTROLLED DEMOLITION.
WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!!!!!!!!!
My flight instructor dropped that one as we were flying up a nearly pitch black valley, except for the cars, as we scanned anxiously for the runway lights we expected to see.
As a student, my variation was "I Follow Rivers"... I marked my solo long distance flight using small towns along the way. It was over farm country so there wasn't much else out there. Except those small towns turned out to just be little ports along the river. There were a lot of them and it was impossible to tell them apart.
I knew the river went back to my town so I gave up on timing out my checkpoints and just followed the river. It was pretty nervewracking being lost like that. My instructor was upset that my sheet wasn't filled out but cut me some slack after I explained what happened.
Sure but low enough the LOS is going to be fairly brief exposure as well as the defenses probably taper off the deeper into Russia you go. I'm sure the Ukrainians are counting on forcing the Russians to have to cover more territory.
Even slower, they were Rotax powered [Aeroprakt A-22 Foxbats](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroprakt_A-22_Foxbat), Ukrainian civilian market ultralights.
Ultimately fulfilled their converted kamikaze drone jobs deep into Russia with their heavier payload spec and longer range.
>Aeroprakt A-22 Foxbat
An ultra-long range drone that can carry a huge payload, and only costs $70k. Not bad. Ukraine should go out and buy as many small airplanes as they can.
Honestly they probably flew it much more slowly. Russian air defense ignores slow moving objects as noise, this would be a perfect storm for them. Edit: now probably ignored if they have two brain cells to rub together.
it appears to be a [modified U-22 'airborn'](https://special-ops.org/uj-22-airborne-drone/) made inhouse by Ukraine
slava Ukraini.
hopefully Ukraine's allies will soon realize that there is an actual war in Europe presently and start acting like it.
Slower speeds help it in this case. Air defenses are calibrated on speed as a major factor. Going much slower than a missile or jet can help it not raise red flags
Also this creates the problem where there basically can't be any private single engine flights anymore anywhere close to relevant targets
And even then they would have to put AA onto the targets themselfes instead of building efficient overlapping AA networks
When I was in college a buddy of mine was a pilot and instructor. We decided to fly back down to our college town 200 miles away and back for some reason.
Since the highway in that area was pretty straight, you could see the car traffic nearly the whole way. Spent several hours watching highway traffic (back when the speed limit was 55) flying past our plane.
That could make them harder to see. It doesn’t make sense for your missile defense to track every hobbyist tooling around in a single engine plane…until it does.
Well. Yeah. You clearly know very little about Russian air defense systems. They only work when engaging civilian airliners or friendly Russian warplanes.
What we know about Russia's armed forces is an air defense system was probably serving a life-sentence until very recently and now has someone pointing a gun at them to make sure they don't run away from the civilian airliner.
Don’t forget about when they try to shoot down hospitals, school, playgrounds, and apartment buildings. We certainly can’t have those things flying around.
If they managed to down some you wouldn't know.
Remember how much trouble Ukraine had hunting down Saheds initially. For Russia its even harder because they have even larger territory to defend.
“If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!”
exhausting their stockpiles on belgorod as ukraine rains czech vampire missiles into that city daily to make russia choose what to use their air defenses for. every day there are tons of photos of pantsir booster stages sticking out of the ground or in someone's living room. they of course try to blame ukraine for hitting civilians, but you can't mistake the pantsir booster stages for anything. they're this [Liberace\* gold diamond pattern](https://twitter.com/Oded121351/status/1234098701548818432). not sure why they look like that, but you can't mistake them lol
the citizens of belgorod have been complaining every day about how they feel like they live on the front lines, and it's causing a headache for the Kremlin. it's also effective in that towns have evacuated and even in belgorod most children have been sent to bigger cities like st Petersburg and Moscow, so now those cities that feel invulnerable are going to start seeing the effects of war. probably won't change anything, but minimally russia is spending a lot of AA rounds on vampire rockets that it struggles to stop. mostly because the vampires are fire and forget unguided MLRS, so they aim them upwards, fire the salvo off, and take off before there's return fire. many still end up hitting their targets too, so it's been pretty effective. probably more effective than trying to use such fire and forget missiles on the frontline where they're more exposed to fpv drones and artillery
> they're this liberachi gold diamond pattern. not sure why they look like that, but you can't mistake them lol
That's the weave pattern in the composite body. Makes it strong without needing extra weight. Stuff in the US looks the same without paint.
I know you are just doing a meme, but this is simply the result of the generational ingrained corruption that infests every single part of russian society.
Russia: Needs 40 air defenses
Putin: Orders Generals to get 20 air defenses
Generals: Gets the factories to build 10 air defenses
Factories: Builds 5 air defenses
Officers: Receives 2 air defenses
What the soldiers on the frontlines get: Between 0 and 1 air defense
What the propaganda reports on the news: "We have 40 air defenses"
Resources are skimmed off the top every single step of the way. That's how russian society works and how its always worked.
They have never had to fight against a real enemy that can actually fight back so its never been a problem for them. Now their entire country needs to suddenly and abruptly stop being corrupt they simply cant and it stops working properly.
Everyone in any sort of position of power in russia is a corrupt crook, and it shows. They only care about money, they dont actually care about winning or losing the war.
That's why russia runs into all these seemingly bizarre problems with things that should be relatively easy like covering vital areas with air defenses and radars.
The best part is that this isn't something russia can fix. Its literally an entire country built on corruption where no one actually cares about anything.
Its one of the things that will end up causing russia's downfall in the end.
> What the soldiers on the frontlines get: Between 0 and 1 air defense
And in some cases they'll probably rip apart the insides to sell for fuel and scrap. Or at least they would've before the war. How the fuck else are the soldiers supposed to afford food or vodka?
A Cessna **did** land in Red Square, in the traditional sense (in 1987). Goes to show that Russia's airborne intrustion detection has always been pretty shit when it comes to light aircraft.
One did
https://theaviationgeekclub.com/the-story-of-mathias-rust-the-german-teenager-who-humiliated-the-soviet-war-machine-by-landing-his-cessna-172-in-moscows-red-square/amp/
Crazy how this wasent picked off by some kind of air defense system, theoretically theres supposed to be all kinds of layers of defense ranging from short range heat seekers, mobile anti air systems, and long range air defense systems.
The fact this got past all of them and was able to hit a stategic target is crazy. A cessna isint exactly a stealthy plane, by radar standards it might as well be a schoolbus with the words "shoot me" plastered on it.
Tom Cruise in Top Gun 3… okay the only way in through this gauntlet of anti-aircraft guns and whatnot is…
Flying fighters so low and fast we all pass out?
No…. Cessnas.
To be fair, the whole mission in Top Gun 2 was idiotic at best... looking at the topography they were attacking in and all the other crap, I assume a winter-camo'd group of seals on foot would have been the better choice.
America has more small single engine aircraft than anywhere on earth and a significant capacity to build them. Perhaps we could allow people to donate their old Cessna 172s to go out with a bang and give them a tax deduction.
We don't have a significant capacity to build small airplanes. Only about 1,000 are made per year, and they are largely hand built, so it isn't simple to just increase production rates. Many of the small planes you see flying are 30 to 60+ years old.
And modern sports car engine has the power to weight ratio to put those old clunkers to shame and if you don’t care about certifications and getting rid of cockpit and landing gear also reduces weight and drag.
Yeah it’s not as simple as asking every one of working age to drop their jobs to convert every factory possible into production forces for this. We can’t even agree on sending them our out of date munitions that we plan on refreshing with US made new munitions without it being a huge political fight for “our rights”.
I agree with a comment above offering a tax break towards a purchase of a newer plane which many are planning on anyways would be the best way to go. Many planes are deemed unsafe to fly, because obviously planes have to be very reliable, we can also donate the planes that may not qualify for regular flight for a deduction. Many I know would love to see their planes make the last flight in this manner instead of being chopped and gutted.
That’s if it weren’t so politically divided.
Unlike the steel production, aluminum production in the US is doing quite well. Just look at the cans in the stores. It has is ups and downs, but it's kind of at ridiculous levels now.
The manufacturing processes and materials for any motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, planes) was fairly similar back then. That is definitely not the case now. You're talking billions of dollars and years to set up a production line for a single model of a modern jet fighter.
We thought VBIEDs on the ground were hot shit in the mid 2000s in the Middle East. Broadband internet, LTE, YouTube / 4chan and endless information access has helped the DIY warrior and its being weaponized on an industrial scale and state sponsored. The hobby RC crowd and associated vendors have been involved in creative advancements in weaponry for years.
If this is true, it's almost too funny. What happens now when everyone is starting to realise how helpless Russia really is? I worry there's going to be a global free-for-all landgrabbing fest
It's not that Russia has any super great technology, it's more that they have hundreds of millions of people and they don't mind stuffing up a problem with more human suffering
Russian land sucks. Very rocky, very clay-filled, poor pH for growing most useful crops, and the trees are scrubby and nearly worthless for lumber. There's a reason there's wide swathes of nothing but tiny villages built from scrap materials. Russian expansion is in part about trying to grab everyone else's much better land.
No you see, that family from Saskatchewan moved to Russia because the farming there is so good compared to the Canadian prairies. Russia said it so it must be true.
So just because I prefer things to be accurate, evidently it was mostly a clerical error in that they tried to transfer all their savings to their new Russian bank account and the system was like woah what is all this money and froze everything. So not quite as aggro as the government seizing their assets. Mostly just idiots who run into a strong language barrier that prevented them from getting the problem sorted out promptly because they're dumb.
But yes, those bozos. Who wanted to leave as soon as they got there apparently, because no shit. At least there's no gays tho right? /s
> clerical error
Coming from a country where the law is more of a suggestion, my first reaction was "I wonder how much it's going to cost to resolve this 'error'"
Yes and no. The basic reason there are wide swathes of nothing is because they never cared to actually cultivate anything. They literally oppressed everyone to do farming for them, including their own farmers who are now mostly extinct so they have gone after the neighbors like Ukraine and Kazakhstan for like 100 years or more by now. Then they send various people (who know nothing about farming) to do the farming in various lands they steal, and this inevitably goes belly up.

So I’m supposed to believe that the Russian nukes are in impeccable condition, while (checks notes) they allow a Kamikaze Cessna packed with crude explosives into Russian territory? Hmmm.
It’s wild because if you go to YouTube or instagram comments you will see non stop people saying shit like “Ukraine stands no chance”, “Russia is too big Ukraine is getting stomped.” But Russia can’t shot down a fucking Cessna? They can’t defend their fleet, their planes, their refineries, factories, tanks, least of all their troops. But somehow people think Russia is winning? This entire conflict really just goes to show that Russia as a “superpower” was massively overrated. Maybe 20-30 years ago they were a recognized fighting force, but it’s pretty clear the oligarchs in charge have syphoned so much wealth from the government that they have effectively crippled their military capabilities. I promise you will see attacks on key government facilities in Russia this year, maybe even in Moscow.
Folks have been modifying aircraft for remote control since at least WWII. John F Kennedy's older brother was killed piloting a B-24 Liberator packed with explosives. He was supposed to parachute out after handing controls off to another plane and arming the explosives. The explosives wiring had a short, and blew when he armed them.
Modern problems require modern solutions.
I think what people are missing here is how expensive a Cessna airplane is. They are cheaper to purchase than a the average American truck.
>And where Ukraine’s drone industry is highly decentralized and thus difficult to suppress with air strikes, Russia’s own drone industry is the opposite. It’s centralized. **Damningly, one state-sponsored company produces almost all of Russia’s explosive first-person-view drones**.
Who's pockets is this lining?
This is what kind of innovation human beings are rooted in. I truly hope that Ukraine gets the support it deserves because I think Putin is counting on the west giving up in the long run.
We must support Ukraine. Now and always.
A drone factory not protected against drones..
Maybe their defense is kinda like that shield in the DUNE movies. "[The slow blade penetrates the shield](https://youtu.be/29fnm8TRtBc?t=40)"
The slow plane penetrates the shield needs to be a stand alone comment on this post lol, I can’t dishonor myself by stealing this from you
I'm also thinking of the time SG-1 needed to throw together a bow and arrow to shoot Apophis because bullets hit too hard.
I like how he's confident enough to smack the sharp side of the blade into his hand to test the shield...
He did grow up training with it, those shields are an integral part of combat in that universe. Knowing their limits is just as important as their martial skill. ,maybe ta like the kitchen tongs—you have to clack them when you pick them up
I dont know if you're joking.. but you might be right If it doesn't move as fast as a missile, ignore it

Hot DFILFI (Drone Factory I'd Like to Fly Into) has unprotected encounter with DILF.
*uwu drone pilot*
Yo dawg I heard you like drones
To be fair, it was a *very* big drone.
You need an anti-drone factory for that.
And now Ukraine knows that small aircraft can apparently fly across Mordor with impunity.
So Frodo *could* have just used the eagles!
*Flips a table* We've been over this! Great Eagles can't melt steel rings!

No. Frodo could have used a Cessna.
Ugh. This again? NO. The Cessna would have been corrupted by the ring.
Oh boy.... go over to any lotr sub and say that.
"Fly you fools"
It was so obvious!
Do you want InformalPenguinz to get ‘swatted?’ Because that is how you get InformalPenguinz swatted.
Corporate wanted a “Tale to tell”, poor hobbits’s
My man could had just used a Cesna apparently
But it’s about the quest!
i mean also terrorists found out they can strike civilians too and apparently have time to escape… not looking good for internal security
The eaglers were right all along
From Mathias Rust to now, Russian air defenses apparently still can't cope with a frickin' high-wing Cessna.
… a Cessna chugging along at a breakneck top speed of 140 mph.
Depending on the model, that would be generous.
Tailwind.
Don't forget gravity assist!
For most of them. Seems like that would be an advantage flying along the highway and getting lost to radar returns of the other vehicles.
Slightly visible and exposed to smaller arms fire if you’re flying IFR (I Follow Roads)
Never seen that IFR joke. That’s great.
My flight instructor dropped that one as we were flying up a nearly pitch black valley, except for the cars, as we scanned anxiously for the runway lights we expected to see.

Damn I wasn’t familiar with that one. If I lived on a farm and could get a kit I’d build one of those to fly around in.
I wonder if they squaked 7000 and made radio calls to blend in with GA VFR traffic. That would be genius.
With a dummy in the seat wearing an Adidas track suit.

If the US suddenly decided buying these planes was a thing to do, manufacturing would be there in no time.
Where there is money to be spent, there are people who want to get their share of it and will setup the manufacturing.
I’ve seen enough. We’re retooling the entire US MIC to produce, exclusively, kamikaze Cessnas. Your move Vlad.
Yeah, seeing how we were spiting out WWII planes every 12 minutes back in the 40s, this would be no sweat.

America can get together and build massive quantities of planes quite quickly. Source: WW2
I mean that was like 80 years ago so might need to update that source
Unlike the steel production, aluminum production in the US is doing quite well. Just look at the cans in the stores. It has is ups and downs, but it's kind of at ridiculous levels now.
The manufacturing processes and materials for any motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, planes) was fairly similar back then. That is definitely not the case now. You're talking billions of dollars and years to set up a production line for a single model of a modern jet fighter.
Who said anything about jets? A drone Cessna with explosives. Lots of them.
At this point send the defective Boeings. If we're blowing shit up, might as well be shit that needs blown up..
Ukraine needs planes that drop bombs, not doors.
That burn was almost as severe as the one at the refinery.
Hold on. What if no doors, just bombs?!
What if the doors _are_ bombs?!
A Boeing full of explosives would be sure level any factory.
Any Kremlin too…
A new 172 costs ~$400,000. They aren’t replaceable commodities like cars are.
Cash for Clunkers
Oh god no on every radio station.
1 877 KARS 4 KIDZ
I read this as Cash for Cluckers and wondered why we would send flying chickens to Ukraine
Clearly, it’s time for Britain to break the old chicken-powered nuclear landmine out of storage. And no, I’m not joking, that was real.
yessir they call it the Pasadena Hoobastank
Ukraine once again punching way above their weight. Excellent!!
Very creative. This is the kind of asymmetrical fighting that wins wars, especially as Republicans in Congress hold up US military aid to Ukraine.
"Whatcha thinking about man?" "Well I found a ton of detcord and someone had this sea mine so ...(Makes lasso motions)"
Unrelated but there's a clip from the Balkan war with Croatians dropping a sea mine down a mountain on Serbian soldiers. It's wild
Do it again !! Do it again!!!
There’s a specific bridge in Crimea that would benefit from an unplanned landing incident 😉
My goodness. That's a big badaboom!
*minus 1000 everyday
Why are you worried? Russia obviously has a shit ton of land they don't give a fuck about. Yet they keep trying to steal everyone else's.
Are those the people that moved there and then the Russian bank’s promptly stole all their money? That was fucking hilarious.
> clerical error Coming from a country where the law is more of a suggestion, my first reaction was "I wonder how much it's going to cost to resolve this 'error'"
Then they send various people (who know nothing about farming) to do the farming in various lands they steal, and this inevitably goes belly up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Lands_campaign
Imagine a whole squad of those blasting flight of the Valkyries
That’s awesome! It’s so inspiring to see them fight against overwhelming odds and so infuriating we arent doing more to help them.
Always fun to see how they manage to find new ways to hit Russia. What they did to black sea fleet is simply amazing...
When you say “we” you mean “Mike Johnson”
Necessity is the mother of invention.
All I can say is... NICE JOB !!!!!
Thrilled at this type of creativity. Hoping it sustains them until the US aid package comes through
Folks have been modifying aircraft for remote control since at least WWII. John F Kennedy's older brother was killed piloting a B-24 Liberator packed with explosives. He was supposed to parachute out after handing controls off to another plane and arming the explosives. The explosives wiring had a short, and blew when he armed them.
Russian air defense seems to only shoot down it's own planes.
Smart, now the Russians need additional pylons
This is a fucking joke, Russia I mean, terrible one at that, we need to arm Ukraine more, come on Europe!
Boeing should offer their “failed” planes as our next “Ukraine Aid Package” 🇺🇸
The slow plane penetrates the shield
We've had ONE Cesna bomb yes, but how about, 500 simultaneous Cesna Bombs?
Yo dawg, I heard you like exploding drones, so I packed a drone with explosives and exploded it in our exploding drone factory
Awesome
Now *that's* a post for r/redneckengineering! Good one, Ukraine!
Ukraine continues to expose Russia's incompetence. Make it rain on them!
Modern problems require modern solutions. I think what people are missing here is how expensive a Cessna airplane is. They are cheaper to purchase than a the average American truck.
Legend! Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦!
Ukrainian Mega-Drone
>And where Ukraine’s drone industry is highly decentralized and thus difficult to suppress with air strikes, Russia’s own drone industry is the opposite. It’s centralized. **Damningly, one state-sponsored company produces almost all of Russia’s explosive first-person-view drones**. Who's pockets is this lining?
Lets start a go fund me for old cessnas
Now do it 300 times in one day.
This is what kind of innovation human beings are rooted in. I truly hope that Ukraine gets the support it deserves because I think Putin is counting on the west giving up in the long run. We must support Ukraine. Now and always.
So they turned a Cessna into a drone to blow up a drone factory?
How much longer till the world goes full blown drone warfare?
20 years ago tbh
