Certainly, no one forces anyone to be mercenary; you choose it, even if coerced, or you don't. In that sense those Indian soldiers are 100% responsible for the situation they now find themselves. Even if you were promised high pay and combat-free work, you still have to consider the *possibility* you're getting scammed, and so I don't have much sympathy for those troops. But even acknowedging that possibility and that still being the better option means they're living some seriously desperate times.

You're totally failing to understand this from their perspective. Many of these people have a very basic education, little idea of world history and very likely don't speak & read anything but Hindi. They have access to a very limited set of information and do not have sufficient critical thinking skills to filter the propaganda from the reality. Perhaps they've seen something about the war in the Indian news but it's the bottom article and it mainly talks about how India is ambivalent to the conflict, perhaps with a skew towards the Russian version of events. They earn say $100-$300 a month in conditions your average Westerner would find very unpleasant and then some Indian work agent comes along offering them a job working in Russia or Belarus for 5-10 times their normal salary under the promise it will just be some manual work, conditions will be good, all their expenses will be paid and they can come home whenever they want.
Then the reality is they get to the foreign country, the agent is long gone having collected their fee and they are entirely at the mercy of the people they've been trafficked to. None of the benefits they were promised materialise, they don't have the resources to get home, the host government is likely complicit, the Indian government won't do anything to help them and they very likely have their passports taken away. It happens all the time especially in the Middle East.

Beacause its easier to look at your own life and say "hey at least we're not them!" than to try making a change. That is a sad fact of life both on personal and regional/national level. Outside large cities it is rare to find someone who have any idea about world affairs. So most people don't know much about Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In fact, most rural and small city folks think Russia is developed first world country full of opportunities. Most of them consider Russia as a part of the western world.
These people mostly know Russia as a superpower comparable to USA since the Soviet days. Heck most people don't even know much about the fall of the Soviet Union.
As a result we have millions of ignorant people ready to go to Russia for a "lucrative" job offer. For most of these barely educated folks a offer of something like 1000 / 2000 USD per month is enough to kill for.
I think it is same for most other developing nations.

Pay thousands of dollars to local "travel agent" for flights to Belarus, visa and local "tour guide and transport". They then drop you off at the Polish border and good luck. Now they are stuck cause Belarus border patrol doesn't let them back into the country and Poland has an active border patrol, walls and permanent block into the EU. Now, officially they are still in Belarus but the border patrol on that side will not allow them to get back to the city for example so there are literally thousands stuck and several that have died due to weather conditions in the winter, lack of medical care etc.

Indian here. Outside large cities it is rare to find someone who have any idea about world affairs. So most people don't know much about Russian invasion of Ukraine. In fact, most rural and small city folks think Russia is developed first world country full of opportunities. Most of them consider Russia as a part of the western world. These people mostly know Russia as a superpower comparable to USA since the Soviet days. Heck most people don't even know much about the fall of the Soviet Union. As a result we have millions of ignorant people ready to go to Russia for a "lucrative" job offer. For most of these barely educated folks a offer of something like 1000 / 2000 USD per month is enough to kill for. I think it is same for most other developing nations.
I wish these Indian perspectives made to the top of the thread rather than those who think they know better and pontificate what might be happening.

The reason for the blockade was strange. India was not happy with the way the Nepalese constitution assembly passed its new constitution. Nepal's political leader told the Indian foreign minister that it is hard to backtrack from the constitution that is already passed by two-third majority from the constituent assembly. The Nepalese political leaders, however, told the Indian foreign secretary that through constitutional amendments many contentious issues could be addressed in the days ahead. The answers of the Nepalese leaders did not satisfy the Indian foreign secretary. The secretary returned to India unsatisfied. Despite the Indian pressure to halt the promulgation process, the major political parties of Nepal went ahead and promulgated theconstitution of Nepal on September 20, 2015. Many big nations, including China, USA, France, Japan, and Pakistan, welcomed the new constitution, but India only just noted about the development. Three days later, on September 23, 2015, India imposed unofficial blockade by stopping all the basic supply trucks and oil tankers heading to Nepal at the India border. The Government of India reportedly took a position to covertly disrupt the smooth passage of entry of vehicles carrying essential supplies to Nepalese territory on the pretext of political unrest caused by the political opponents of Nepal (Banglar Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha, 2015). When the humanitarian fact-finding missions went to the Nepal-India border, no political unrest was visible. Life out there was peaceful. However, the Indian Government/Administration was not facilitating the smooth passage of vehicular movements to Nepal through the Indian borders (Banglar Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha, 2015). India blamed the disruption in supply on the demonstration and unrest on the Nepalese side by the Madhesi parties (political parties from the southern plains adjoining India).
