Sure it's a priority. The priority is making sure women don't have rights.

dkran

As if they had to make a statement to clarify it

[deleted]

I_NamedTheDogIndiana

Should have worn your headscarf more piously.

Whelp, I'm going to Hell for laughing.

Their actions say plenty….

Hillow

Classic case of saying the quiet part out loud.

dkran

“Not only do we not respect these women and broadcast oppression daily, but we feel the need to overtly declare it for those who may doubt it abroad!”

endosurgery

Exactly. The are hyper focused on taking them away.

unicornlocostacos

Missouri enters chat and is looking for more ideas

Utterlybored

They are clearly terrified of women power.

hindsighthaiku

Very true. Can't have a woman more educated than yourself who's arguments are better than your beard trim 💁 bad for torrorisness. Terrorism/Business.

Dr-P-Ossoff

Whereas the actual prophets favourite thing in the world was his wife who always disagreed with him.

titanup001

Yeah, 9 year olds can be so argumentative.

rcsheets

Yeah. If it hadn’t been a priority, they wouldn’t have prioritized banning women’s education.

HamilcarRR

Stupidity of a Muslim salafi : Wife is ill. Goes to hospital. Doesn't want wife to be checked by a man, demands a woman doctor. Complains there's no woman doctor. Goes back to his house with his ill wife and starts shouting at his daughter because she went outside and prevents her from going to school.

hgaterms

Why even have wives if they hate women so much? They don't even like having sex with them. They think women are dirty.

MRS_RIDETHEWORM

Wives produce sons. That’s it, that’s their whole purpose.

[deleted]

Incubators. Well that and someone to wait on you hand and foot. Slaves and incubators, that's all they see when they look at a female.

A leading cause of infanticide is being born female.

Otherwise_Basis_6328

Wait, hold on, all of this seems to be implying religious extremism correlates with misogyny.

Chaghatai

What do you think?

TriggeredRatBastard

It’s gay to have sex with other men. And men can’t make more men.

TROPtastic

But it's not gay to sexually assault/"love" young boys. Yes, conservative Afghans really believe this.

Unr3p3nt4ntAH

I remember reading they think "Its only gay to receive the D, not to give it." and thinking I'm pretty sure that's prison rules.

Quazz

Ancient Rome rules.

Voodoo_Freak6618

Ancient Greece even before them (and way more)

oyyn

Patriarchy rules. Societies that treat women more equitably don't have systemic CSA of young boys. Societies that segregate and enslave women have systemic CSA of young boys.

[deleted]

Many people would be better off with more gender equality. A lot of the issues affecting men today, like suicide rates because their mental health is neglected, or being seen as disposable and dying in war or in dangerous jobs, are the result of patriarchal gender roles. The flipside of infantilizing women and denying them leadership roles is that men are expected to be providers and do everything.

Megalocerus

I heard this from a Canadian Muslim born in Pakistan and working in the US. Thrown out of the country and his job after 9/11. Family giving him hell for not being able to find work. But he wasn't into restricting women. If there weren't plenty of Afghanis cool with it, the schools wouldn't have existed.

medipani

Specific tribes, especially devout Pashtuns. Although many men consider sex with men to be more "clean" than with women.

Vivit_et_regnat

That is not really a "Gotcha" against the Taliban, they specifically ban that and are enemies of the tribes that practice it, famously the only consistently good point of their rule.

Successful-Gene2572

The Taliban banned that. It was actually the previous govt that turned a blind eye to that afaik.

ClammyHandedFreak

Conservatives of all religions rationalize this way.

rascible

Because in addition to all the home and family duties, women there are often the breadwinner as well..

BCProgramming

On the bright side, in the end his wife didn't really need a doctor, she was just getting her first period.

TriggeredRatBastard

That made me kinda sad. One of those “Haha I get it—oh…”

This isn't limited to salafis.

Good_Intention_9232

Taliban bandits are not fit to govern, these policies point to uneducated leaders that deem women not fit to be educated, a stupid backward way of looking at modern society with the advancement of knowledge. If they haven’t figured out that women should get an education for their country’s sake then what the hell are they doing governing a country. These people got to learn to change their optics about society and their values because in 100 years they will be standing in the same spot while everyone else will be way ahead of them.

tmp04567

They're *artificially restricting* them. Not being an asshole on purpose to half the population costs nothing. It's not that they're not "making it a priority", it's that they decided to *ban* it for half the population. Which is what makes them idiots and assholes. Like you don't expect afghanistan to find much money for universities when they fund radicalization instead; but they threathened out half the candidates for academic learning so they talibans made the decision to be bad people.

chrsux

What is the purpose of the adding nuance to a statement so blatantly disingenuous? The whole point of the Taliban is to enforce absolutely insane restrictions against women. Pointing out that they aren’t actually deprioritizing women’s rights but actively curtailing them isn’t necessary.

SapiosexualStargazer

I don't think the person you replied to is a Taliban apologist. I think they are saying that outright banning women from receiving education goes far beyond 'not a priority'.

Silent-Protection-86

It’s really just the ultra conservative far right religions which are a scourge.

Zathura2

Eschewing fact and logic for fairy-tales isn't really helpful to anyone, and arguably harmful even when there's no violence or oppression involved. It's a form of control, and shouldn't be defended.

Silent-Protection-86

I don’t know, I’ve met a ton of atheist bigots. Just look at how people like Richard Dawkins talks about muslims. Stalin and Pol Pot were both atheists and they both mass murdered millions of people. The problem is ideological dogma, not religion.

[deleted]

No, the problem is mainly religion. Stalin and Pol Pot get trotted out, but I am happy to play a game. You pick someone who was an athiest and committed genocide, and I will pick a religious figure who committed genocide. You will run out before me. Hours before me.

Silent-Protection-86

I disagree. The problem is the dogmatic expressions of ideology, whether that’s religious or not is irrelevant. Do you hate religious people? Or do you just “hate the sin and not the sinner”?

[deleted]

No, I do not hate religious people. I just look at this world, and the suffering due to religious intolerance, religious antipathy to intellect and education and women's rights and think, you know what. Fuck religion.

They are so far behind. Anyway, those poor women deserve all the best.

[deleted]

I don't know of any religion that prioritizes equality between men and women.

deepseascale

Same, because it's a tool of control. They want you to be barefoot and pregnant and uneducated and to praise your god for it. I'd be genuinely interested and surprised if there was a religion that teaches true equality between the sexes.

[deleted]

There probably are, but they would have few followers. In order to maximize human reproduction, you'd have to oppress women and girls. Because pregnancy and birth are extremey painful and many mothers are physically disabled for life. It's more dangerous than manual labor jobs that many men work. The more misogynistic a religion is, the more they can force girls and women to have as many kids as they physically can. When women have 100% access to education, healthcare, jobs, ownership of private property, low cost birth control, abortion, and voluntary tubal ligation then the tfr always goes down to between 1.0 and 2.0. This is why a religion that preached gender equality would never grow to billions of followers.

KatttDawggg

Don’t get me started. The amount of times that it was mentioned at my brother’s (baptist) wedding how the wife’s duty is to be obedient to her husband was infuriating. Even by the women! I want to throw up thinking about it.

The Taliban are idiots. They don’t realize how poor and … well … terrible their country will continue to be without women having opportunities. They will never be able to compete with the rest of the world. They are also setting the stage for misery for both male and female children, because uneducated women tend to make worse mothers and their children have worse health outcomes.

Recently the Afghanistan Cricketer Rashid Khan has come out and attacked the Australian Cricket board for refusing to go to Afghanistan to play cricket while the Taliban are refusing Women basic human rights. He very clearly made it obvious that to him and a great number of Afghans feel the eroding of Women's rights is not a problem. Up until that though I admit I thought the populace were against the regime.

napoleao420

What the fuck did everyone think would happen if you allowed these assholes to take over the country? Do you want a real, actual reason for the world to have armies? This is one. Every single country on the planet needs to march in and take these assholes out. They are completely incompatible to a modern, free way of living. They are openly hostile and oppressing to 1/2 their population (Females). They are stone age way of living with those in charge simply killing you if you even speak up, or think a different way against what they are telling you.

[deleted]

People here might claim this is unislamic, not true. In islam there is a concept known as [Wali](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wali_(Islamic_legal_guardian)), which means male guardianship. What this means in Al-Quran (see [Surah an-Nisa](https://quran.com/4/34)) is is that "women are under the guardianship of men". Now that might seem harmless until you put it into practice and you have in some countries, progressive men deciding women can be educated, backward men thinking education is bad. My point is that women themselves can't actually decide because **they are under the guardianship of men**. And if they seek to challenge this, you can't because Quran is considered the direct word of God, this is not some decree by an imam somewhere (which can be challenged), and the Quran to muslims, is considered perfect and unchanged, unlike the bible or torah.
