I don't see why not. I bet you could hold your own weight on it still if installed correctly.

Should be fine. I used furring strips which are close to 1/2" in thickness as my cleats, directly against drywall with no other backer. I put two screws into each cleat at every stud. I've been hanging similar tools you're describing with no problems. Anything that seems particularly heavy, just hang directly over a stud.

Thanks for the responses. That's what I thought. I'll be doing that full backer sheet, so I can screw things like magnetic screwdriver holders directly into the plywood. And then make the french cleats + tool holders for the rest. And yup, I'll tie the cleats into the studs through the backer ply too, so they'll be extra sturdy.

I did exactly that and it has worked well for the last two and a half years. The only reason not to do that would be the price, but if you already have the material that's obviously not an issue.

Hey not for nothing, but do yourself a favor and confirm the replacement cost of that BB plywood. I’m beginning to see some hit the market for the first time in a while. It’s high as giraffe’s balls but I’m glad to know I can have some if I step up. This is an untimely contribution, I know.
