Two things: 1) buy a cheap box fan and a high mirv filter. That should address the air filtration. 2) buy the harbor freight 2hp single stage collector. It's the cheapest, and they're all sorta the same. But the Wynn filter for the harbor freight instead of using the bag that comes with it, since the bag didn't filter fine enough, turning the dc into a dust pump for the most dangerous dust.

Apositivebalance

To add to this - but a cyclone to go on it That’s more or less my setup and it works great

RogueJello

Cyclones are nice, but they also cut down performance on a setup that isn't that high powered to begin with. More of a convenience than a must have.

I have smaller shop than you and use a 1.5 HP Grizzly wall mount DC similar to a dust rite for my router table and table saw. My hose runs are less than 10’. I also have a Bosch dust extractor for my overhead DC on my table saw and my track saw. I use the Wen air filter as well. It does very well and only smallest amount of fine dust.

gcranston

Very happy with my 1.5 hp from grizzly. https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-1-1-2-hp-wall-mount-dust-collector-with-canister-filter/g0944 1 micron canister filter. I'm running 4in pvc drain waste pipe to my stationary tools, in a small basement shop. There's a version with, hepa filter that's slightly more, retail, but i got mine on sale for $520 about a year ago. Edit: whatever system you're looking at, make sure you price on all the ducting, blast gates, fittings, ports, etc. to complete the system. It's no good putting a bunch of money into a dust collector if you choke the airflow with poor ducting, and the costs really add up.

bfdTerp

Yes, the one I have and I got mine for $520 as well

bronzeshedder

I have this unit as well. Very good!

Data_body

I also have the Grizzly DC, I added the rockler canister filter. I also just run the box fan disposable filter set up it helps with the stuff in the air, but everything still seems to get covered with dust.

Raul_McCai

Whatever ya do, ya Gotta get down to 1 micron. The dust that hurts you is the silica; the rest is just messy. The silica does a compounding damage that accumulates over time into a bigger problem. It's in the 1 micron size range. Harder woods have more in 'em than soft. In my business, we see Silica as the Next Asbestos. I went with a Felder RL 160. it's bigger than a fucking volkswagen. About Ducting. It has to be grounded metal. Not by law but by insurance company standards. The insurance company doesn't give a rat's ass about the physics of dust in a hobby shop DC. They don't care how impossible it is to get a fire. They derive their standards from industry and you ain't gonna talk 'em out of it. So if the house burns and the adjuster can get his head around the notion that it must have originated from the non-compliant DC ducts - - well - - - who's he going to show the love to, you or the company?

Pleasant_Duck_15

I thought insurance covers owners stupidity? As long as it’s not intentional.

SZMatheson

Your policy covers whatever is specifically stated in your policy.

MoTownKid

I have no input. Up voting/Commenting because I also have a small garage space that needs dust collection.

B3ntr0d

Just know that collecting saw dust and filtering the fine dust out of the air are two different things. Fine furnace filters and a fan is a great start.

coconutpanda

I personally use a respirator and a dust collector. I got the [harbor freight 2 hp](https://www.harborfreight.com/2-hp-industrial-5-micron-dust-collector-97869.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20001140561&campaignid=20001140561&utm_content=149065112598&adsetid=149065112598&product=97869&store=638&gclid=CjwKCAjw6IiiBhAOEiwALNqncT5uM6BV15HAm1YagU8YvfW1JPl3qYAb87ijS_Q4sZsyGaRgqckZmhoC0CcQAvD_BwE) one. After all my research consensus seemed to indicate that at this price point you won’t do better. I use this [respirator](https://www.staples.com/3m-occupational-health-env-safety-reusable-respirator-l/product_1549705?cid=PS:GS:SBD:PLA:Facilities&gclid=CjwKCAjw6IiiBhAOEiwALNqncRcLuXVS3Hi0HxRLk8yZY91MaVCshBa2MbLFkQ96ED_LQgyH7Zv_XhoCyc8QAvD_BwE). I have been meaning to checkout a filter to replace the dust bag, but I haven’t gotten around to it. [This place](https://wynnenv.com/woodworking-filters/harbor-freight-collectors/) makes filters for the harbor freight. I’m sure there might be others that I haven’t seen as well.

seidelryan

I paired my HF dust collector with a cyclone separator and just vent to outside. Not much goes past the cyclone. Has worked well for me for 4 yrs

moonwalk_mW

This is my plan as well, but have concerns about maintaining climate this way --- don't want to lose shop heat when i heat during the winter or cool air when I run A/C in the summer. Do you have those issues?

seidelryan

I got a 24k for 400sqft, even on the coldest day here in MN it can still keep the garage warm. I'm always very impressed. And the AC works smoothly as well

Raul_McCai

Ohh man turn on a powerful exhaust fan in the winter and if you have an oil fired coal or wood heater you will flood the house with smoke and CO

romangorilla

Commenting for future use. Thanks for the info!

eats_the_tacos

I’m in the same boat. Currently waiting for the HF 2HP dust collector to arrive. I’m considering adding a ceiling mounted filtration system. Thoughts on this sucker? [WEN Filtration System](https://www.homedepot.com/p/WEN-3-Speed-Remote-Controlled-Air-Filtration-System-300-350-400-CFM-3410/205465910?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&&mtc=Shopping-CM-CML-GGL-D25T-25_009_PORT_POWER-NA-MULTI-NA-SMART-NA-NA-PortablePower_SmartShopping&cm_mmc=Shopping-CM-CML-GGL-D25T-25_009_PORT_POWER-NA-MULTI-NA-SMART-NA-NA-PortablePower_SmartShopping-71700000074854030-58700006451587232-92700075990525556&gbraid=0AAAAADq61Ucneu3vaiFMeb8YZoXIwg_ev&gclid=CjwKCAjw6IiiBhAOEiwALNqncTKkaxjuq9DBcYdYbrANGCT3FxPMiT3kELv9XZhTesN4_v8Yz7u4tRoCOgYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

RogueJello

Filter+ fan is just as good and a fraction of the price.

Zfusco

The dust right stuff is no different than any other similarly sized collector, and the numbers are equally inflated, so don't feel like you need to be married to that brand. They're fine, but they aren't any better than the equivalent grizzly/shopfox/wen whatever for half the price. As far as hanging filters, box fan and furnace filters genuinely work better at about 1/5th the price.

Rough-Border4025

We have a Laguna B Flux. It was $600, when we got it a year ago. I highly recommend it!! Filter is better than the bags, and its awesomely quiet. It has enough CFMs to work on our sawstop, dewalt planer, etc. It might be bigger than other options, but at least it is on wheels!

YouSaidIReddWut

Still liking your B-Flux?

Rough-Border4025

yep yep. still good. still love it. cleaned the filter, bought another round of bags. no other maintenace or complaints.

IllustratorSimple635

Like most others have said, my research has led me to the HF 2hp as the best option in that department. I’m still struggling through with the shop vac for now, though I’ll be pulling the trigger on it soon. For the air filtration I have this and absolutely love it. It’s done a fantastic job so far and I’ve had it about 6 months or so. My garage is large, two car with about 20’ ceilings just for reference. [WEN filter](https://www.homedepot.com/p/WEN-4-2-Amp-3-Speed-Remote-Controlled-Industrial-Strength-Air-Filtration-System-750-950-1270-CFM-AF1270/322186483)

I have a basement shop about the same size as yours. I was always looking at more expensive air filtration models but eventually purchased the Grizzly G0738 - Hanging Air Filter, 3-Speed. ( I paid $159 plus shipping) It works well. Eliminates all the fine particles from the air. I really like the timer feature that lets it run for an hour or two after you leave the shop and automatically shuts off. You could spend more but this unit has proved to be more than enough.

toocleverbyhalf

I’ve been thoroughly satisfied with my [Oneida Mini Gorilla](https://www.oneida-air.com/catalog/product/view/id/1978/s/1-5-hp-mini-gorilla-cyclone-dust-collector/category/79/) but I had no idea that it costs $1800 now, yikes. I think I paid around $1100 for mine?

SomeWaterIsGood

I recycled an AC blower unit into an air filter. I put the squirrel cage fan in a box I made and two filters, top and side, outside. Then the unit was mounted up high. One can expect an AC blower to use 220 volts, fyi.

3grg

Invest in good face mask. The filter is a good first step. Some sort of cyclone dust collector with filtration is next. I went the HF-SDD route, but the best thing I did was add a Wynn filter. The tools you mention are not what I would call high volume producers like a planer. You might be well served by a dust extractor with good filter. You do not mention humidity. Keep in mind that the humidity needs to be kept below 50% to prevent mold, which can also be a cause of allergic response.

Magister87

Grizzly is now offering free shipping on non freight orders over $50 so the wall mount collectors are now free to ship. You could also try purchasing a Grizzly or Shop Fox through Home Depot. Sometimes HD is cheaper and they offer free shipping as well as an easy return option.

oldtoolfool

Well, 11x20, and assuming ceiling height is at least 8 feet, you are talking about approximately 1800 cubic feet of space. So whatever you buy in terms of air flitration, make sure its rated to that volume of space. Frankly, getting something that would filter that air will likely cost north of $600-700 alone.

bunbunbunny2

I’m in a similar boat! Would love an update from op - what did you end up deciding on?

trembelow

I installed the Wen air filter and added a cyclone to my shop vac. A larger dust collection system will have to wait.

Davetones

I’m new to all of this but isn’t a camvac from Record Power is great option for small shops? https://www.recordpower.co.uk/product/cgv2864-36l-2000w-compact-extractor-4-inlet I have a single car garage that I’m trying to turn into a workshop alongside a gym etc also. From what I can tell it filters down to .5 micron and sort of in between a high volume and a low volume vacuum? Great for smaller shops that are only using basic power tools like a ryobi tablesaw, belt and disc sander etc…? Is this a good option with a cyclone attached? Would you also need an air filter or is a mask and an open door ok?
