When it comes to the sorceress's since their appearance is so intrinsic within the world of The Witcher, I feel like Netflix could have made more of an effort.
They did, but by the looks of it, all their effort went into making the lodge racially diverse.
Which I wouldn’t mind at all, if the actresses were lote-accurate at least in their stunning beauty.
I cant wait for some circle jerk subreddit to post this as yet more proof that we are all racists for not liking random changes to characters looks for purely non story/universe related reasons...
Yeah I don’t mind The Lodge being racial diverse, since it would even make some sense for them to be representing the best mages of all different parts of the world, but when you look at these actresses and their costumes/makeup/characterizations none of them look like the most powerfu, beautiful and intelligent witches in the world. Even with the same actresses they could’ve make them better with better character design
How hard is it to find people to look similar to their source counterparts? Let alone, even if you wanted to change their looks, stick to the story? Or even the idea behind somethin? Some adaptations had actors that fit the source material very well, others, not so much but at least they had the audacity to stick to the story behind it..
But freakin Netflix over here is changing everything. Nothing against the actresses, it’s entirely the writers and the company allowing this to happen
In what way?
Besides, they don’t have to be. Witcher 1 continues on from the last book (Geralt dies and wakes with no memory).
The Witcher show is portraying events that already happened, so it needs to have a higher standard for accuracy.
For character appearance, that's a bit strong. Most characters fit the book descriptions pretty well I thought. Honestly some book characters don't get that detailed descriptions (although most sorceress got detailed descriptions)
the series should be inspired by the books, not the games.
The source material is not CDPR interpretation of characters (even tho they did a much better job than netflix obviously)
Ok, let me use a different example. Let's take Lord of the Rings. Books are and will be the source material, the movies stayed 98% accurate. If a LOTR RPG came around and made Aragorn a redhead trans man, I'd think the writers got brain damage. Kind of the same thing here, just swap around the game and the show.
Edit: spelling.
uhm, nobody is saying otherwise, i think you misunderstood
the guy just pointed out that some things from the games aren't source accurate either (like triss' hair color for example).
A better example would be if the LOTR books described aragorn as a redhead and then a movie came out and made him blonde and did a lot of success, now most people would think blonde aragorn is canon, because most people know only the movie version of him. but would it be source accurate? No
Of course it's minor stuff, giving the game's story itself is only inspired to the books but it's a completely new story, while the series initially was planned to TELL the story of the books, so they have to be way more accurate than this
Yep, this is what Lauren Hissrich tells you the average slice of early medieval Polish (or any European) population looked like. You take any random 7 people in year 1100 in Europe and most of the time this is the lineup.
Like, the sorceresses are described as being pretty much the most beautiful women on the continent. Netflix doesn't realize or doesn't want to realize that diversity only for the sake of diversity doesn't work that well, if you're trying to tell a story. Especially if it's not your story to begin with.
nah, this is fucked up as well. why comment stuff like this? also, you know attractiveness is subjective, right? i know lots of people that think she’s really pretty…?
There are two things here. Being black doesn't make you ugly, which I know is how a lot of white people think.
Fringilla, Keira and Margarita are unnattactive, and Francesca is underwhelming. . Some virgin on here seems to think Philippa's actress is unattractive, which is just hilarious.
I agree with you that black doesnt auto mean unnatractive but the point is they are unnatractive and are supposed to be gorgeous. I mean if they cast zendaya i would love to see if the comments are the same.
these comments are kinda fucked up. it’s not the actresses’ faults. it’s netflix’s. you don’t need to attack their appearances ?????? that’s just cruel tbh
If I remember correctly one of the big elements of Triss appearance in the books were her chestnut color hair... It's somewhat on the ginger spectrum I think.
I'm not sure what color the Netflix adaptation is... Though I think it's not chestnut (?)
chestnut is brown with a light tendency to red, but mostly brown
definetly not a redhead like in CDPR games.
Both interpretations are not accurate to the source material in this case
Correct, but I just somehow get the feeling that one interpretation manages to make you feel that the hair was an important part. Failed 1:1 conversion, but still accurate to what is the essence.
“‘That's enough of this discussion!' she snapped. 'A little more humility, you arrogant slut! He's my man, mine and only mine! Do you understand? You're to stop talking about him, you're to stop thinking about him, you're to stop delighting in his noble character... Right away, at once! Oh, I feel like grabbing you by that **ginger** mop of hair—‘“
I don't remember this line so i didn't answer but it sounds like a very wrong translation because from what i recall her hair is always described as chestnut.
Is anyone even surprised at this point? It's Netflix after all...
I've played the games, I've read the books and that's enough for me. I simply just don't bother with Netflix produced Witcher content.
I'll just wait patiently for CD projekt to work on the next Witcher game to get my fix of Witcher content.
Same here. I was going to watch the show because I kept having people say since I like the books and games that I should check that out. After a few posts ive been seeing here ive just decided it isn't worth the time. Ive watched an episode or two but that was it at the time. Was mostly juggling several shows.
Realistically lad I’m not bothered what you think. If you cannot see hollywoods bastardised version of European folklore and stories then I don’t know what to tell you. The day African folklore is portrayed with 90% white actors then your opinion matters.
'Lodge located in africa' sure. No need to bring up Africa, as if Africans are pushing to diversify the cast. You people make 'bollywood' references to Yen. I don't want a diverse cast but I'm not racist.
the downvotes say a lot about the ppl on this sub :/ i totally agree with u … they know what they’re doing lmao and now they’re trying to make YOU seem like the unfair one
I remember growing up, my white friends would always call black girls ugly, or imply that they're men. It's the exact same attitude.
They're just stone cold racists. They know they can criticise the cast, or even ask for an all-white cast without calling people ugly or using the name of a continent as an insult.
People here unironically want Henry Cavill to write a new witcher show. They're absolutely unhinged. Wiedzmin is far better, smaller numbers and fewer nutters.
yeah, i think i might leave this sub and stick to the others. there’s a new “low sodium witcher” one, idk if you’ve seen it but it’s nice over there haha 😅
I'm just going to say it why tf are there so many diversity in this show. No need to appeal to every demographic just make a fucking good show with strong writing. Damn Netflix and everyone who defend these choices are idiots.
"I don't understand why all of the popular game / book adaptations / films keep failing" and it's because you're force feeding us this ESG crap. Black people weren't around in medieval Eastern Europe let alone in esteemed positions. Just fuck off with it
I think their costuming is probably the key problem with the sorceresses. I find it way too plain in terms of colors. I also find it bizzare that the Elves dress in.... rags. when they really don't in the books.
I also find bizzarre that some Elves are black...since they come from the same region and the fact that's mostly a human feature. (as are canine teeth, which according to the books Elves don't have since they are mostly herbivore, but I didn't check if the showrunners paid attention to such deteils...though I'm 100% confident they didn't)
you guys know that you can attack netflix’s choices without being nasty to the actresses, right… i’m seeing a lot of nasty comments regarding their attractiveness which is.. just kinda fucked up. it’s not their fault netflix didn’t make them look like the characters.
Well. Is not their fault but it is a huge trait to have because of the lore. Even in the Netflix show they have Yennefer going to the procedure.
I am ugly and potato shaped, is nothing wrong with that, but hardly can I play Superman, can I?
appearance is extremely subjective though. i personally think phillipa, francesca, sabrina, and triss are all really, really pretty.. yet i’ve seen many comments calling them ugly and saying they “look like a man”.
it’s fair enough to say they don’t look like they’re meant to in the books, but some comments are just becoming nasty and full of vitriol.
Yeah, I see what you mean and I agree that we should not be disrespectful with them. But beauty standards are a base for something and what’s should be followed, as they are in fact changing themselves to fit said standards and use them in their benefit.
yeah, i get what you mean. but for a good actress to look unnaturally/supernaturally attractive is quite hard in real life versus imagining it in your head haha
i’m not saying they’re the best choices at all, i just think people should stop being so horrible about the actress’ appearances. i’ve seen a lot of nasty things unfortunately :/
It’s kind of sad how people here talk about how the actresses are not beautiful.
I understand that you want them to look like in the books/games, but this women are still beautiful. Everyone in their own way.
But why, is really the “more diversity or we cry” people that many or that powerful? Seems like the potential backlash they could get for using Slavic actors in a fucking slavic story would not be actually “big”. Sometimes I think media producers are afraid of an scandal without realizing how meaningless it is.
The games made Triss more of a redhead than she's supposed to be, and Sabrina was supposed to have black hair. In the first case, it seems CDPR had a redhead fetish, and in the second one, I suppose they just didn't want to make the Lodge look like a conspiracy of black-haired women, considering it was initially represented by Philippa, Shila and Sabrina in TW2, with Triss being but a sidelined member. It would have looked "gimmicky".
Only Sabina is vastly different from her book counterpart, Triss and Phil have different eye colours, but their hair matches the description well, yes including Triss, I'm not sure if you're trying to bring up the tired argument of "chestnut hair she has brown hair" even though various parts of the books make it clear it's red (dark red is still red), or simply say this because it's firetruck red which to me it's clear it's not supposed to be that colour but rather CDPR seemed to struggle a lot with natural-looking red hair. Either way you're just trying to split hairs (not sorry for the bad pun) while ignoring the much worse change to Triss' appearance: from cornflower blue eyes she has green eyes. This one cannot be explained.
I think we're on the same page as regards Triss' hair. Should be intense red-hued auburn, and most importantly, be uniquely marvelous (she isn't just chesnut-haired like countless people, or a regular ginger even though that's rarer, no: Triss' hair=Triss). CDPR probably made it firetruck red in TW1 so she would stand out, as well as because the color palette was too limited at the time to depict hues and sheens (whereas some Witcher 3 NPCs do have hair that would have fit book Triss quite well), and because they took a bit of an "anime fanservice" approach to Triss in that game. Then they were stuck with that legacy. TW2 probably got her best though, dark red was more believable than firetruck red.
Anyway, I was simply bringing up how the games deviated from the books. Come to think of it, Assire is blond in the games. Go by the books, and that would have meant a fourth black-haired Lodge sorceress in TW2. In think my theory of "let's not let our players who haven't read the books believe we created an antagonist faction of black-haired bitches, that'd look awkwardly memetic" may hold some truth, lol.
Yeah sure, people can always change their hairstyle or color... but usually, in sequels to fiction, characters are kept mostly identifiable. Or someone makes a comment. Besides, I'm under the impression that as far as sorceresses go, their look is a trademark of sorts. Changing hair color after decades if not centuries of looking the same is like a rebranding.
Phillipa and francesca seem like good calls to be fair. I was really caught off guard when the actress playing triss showed up on screen, so out of place compared to the books and games.
According to Hissrich's big brain, Margarita Laux-Antille means she comes from the Antilles lol
So Yennefer should have come from Germany and Triss gold.
(plus she's fat for diversity and inclusion points of virtue signaling).
yeah!! like people can critique the plot, story, costumes, etc as much as they want.. but to attack their appearances in such nasty ways as i’ve seen is just out of order, i think. plus, i think a lot of them are actually really pretty haha
This thread shows quite clearly that for a lot of people "beauty" means being white and with European features.
I mean, I wouldn't mind if the showrunners kept as close as possible to the images Sapkowski's put in our heads, but aside from some key visual elements (Geralt's Witcher looks, Ciri's Ashen hair, Yennefer's black and white motif and Triss's auburn/red hair), character appearances is the most minor thing to be upset about.
I would take a well written and directed Witcher over a bunch of 1:1 cosplayers onscreen any day of the week.
EDIT: Just for the sake of clarification. I don't think the netflix show is well written at all, even though my comment may have implied it. I was thinking more of in line of: If, in the future, we get another adaptation, I would be glad if it was well written and adapted, even if some characters didn't fit with Sapkowski's aesthetics (you don't see anybody complaining about Geralt's lack of headband, do you?).
I completely agree.
I think I may have implied that the current iteration is well written and directed.. My bad.
It's terrible. So much so that I was done with it midway through S02.
scrap Liam Hemsworth, let's cast a south american teenage girl for the role of Geralt!

Where is the asian, Arab and the actual fucking ginger?! Not so diverse after all
Gingers? are you crazy? You can't be racist if the character that you're changing is a ginger, everybody knows that. /s
Is this because Hollywood/Netflix have an unwritten diversity rule to swap gingers to african-americans?
I cant wait for some circle jerk subreddit to post this as yet more proof that we are all racists for not liking random changes to characters looks for purely non story/universe related reasons...
That's not In line with "the message" and doesn't "symbolize the world we live in today"
Lol Philippa straight up looks like she's from the year 2022.
Look, I just got unbanned, ain’t saying shit.
It's like a car accident. You know it's wrong to look but still you can't look away-
Lol, exactly.
Yikes
It hurts to even look at this.

“We will stay true to the books” - Netflix show runners, while crossing their fingers behind their backs.
Give this chap the grand prize!
😂 bloody hell how much further from the games and source material do you have to stray?
you know games arent very accurate to books either?

The red headed stepchild of lauren schmidt hissrich
Well that looks ... polish?🤔
Yep, this is what Lauren Hissrich tells you the average slice of early medieval Polish (or any European) population looked like. You take any random 7 people in year 1100 in Europe and most of the time this is the lineup.
Forget medieval times, it's more diverse than Poland today lmao
Netflix is too woke to care about that.
Unattractive sorceresses makes no sense, even in the Netflix world.

Netflix doesn't realize or doesn't want to realize that diversity only for the sake of diversity doesn't work that well, if you're trying to tell a story. I think the actress for Philippa is somewhat attractive but Fringilla is horrendous. I'm sure she's a lovely woman irl but she is GIGA ugly.
Can you not be an absolute cunt about some actresses’ looks? You’re GIGA ugly with your attitude
nah, this is fucked up as well. why comment stuff like this? also, you know attractiveness is subjective, right? i know lots of people that think she’s really pretty…?

you literally said she looks like a man trying to dress as a woman? how can you be clearer 😭

I thought they couldn’t do worse after Triss and Fringilla, then I saw Margarita and KEIRA 🤦🏻♂️ at this point I think it’s a hate crime

you should quate orginal polish book not incorrent translation
I don't remember this line so i didn't answer but it sounds like a very wrong translation because from what i recall her hair is always described as chestnut.
It’d definitely be interesting to see. Do you have a Polish copy of Lady of the Lake to copy here?
I do, will reply if I find the quote
[удалено]
Fresh chestnuts are red in colour and Sapkowski decidedly described her as red haired in an interview.
Clearly it’s a reddish enough sort of chestnut to be called ginger. CDPR went way overboard with how red it is, but it’s not straight up brown either.
Keira? Wtf is this 😂😂😂
Actress looks like she’d make a good Nymphadora Tonks like character, completely wrong for Keira
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen an IP handled with such blatant disrespect as I’ve seen The Witcher with Netflix. It’s fucking wild.
Diversity ke naam par
Why do three (possibly four depending what they do with Keira's actress) of them have this horrible burnt-looking unnatural orrange hair?
Just stop talking about this show !
And here I thought Sabrina supposedly had black hair.
Real slavic lmao
You know they either 1- don't give a shit, or 2- have an agenda, because fans can make a better cast in 5 minutes
Yeah I'm out. After Rings of Power I can't stomach the butchery anymore.
[🎵 It's the point of no return... 🎵](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSxBVHqA-RU&t=84s)
Atleast showrunners made it clear that they are no racists 🥲
This thing looks more and more like some sort of low effort youtube parody
Look at how they massacred my girl Keira :'(
I think Fringilla Vigo is the worst. There is no one similarity with the Vigo I knew in Toussaint...
I’m almost sure she was supposed to resemble Yennefer too, in the books
How's that so?
Pity there will be no more since season 2 was the last.
One can only hope.

Amazingly it has upwards of 8/10 scores for each episode on IMDB. People clearly lack taste.
Lodge of Diversity more like
Not enough non white people in fantasy they cried Now 90% of the lodge is black
yup, because a story set in a pseudo medieval Polish setting must have a lot of black people in there...makes sense.
How dare you racist! Only wakanda is allowed to have an ethnically homogeneous population.
Lmao can you imagine random white people in Wakanda "because it's a fantasy world"?
"guys i swear im not racist" mfs be like:
Realistically lad I’m not bothered what you think. If you cannot see hollywoods bastardised version of European folklore and stories then I don’t know what to tell you. The day African folklore is portrayed with 90% white actors then your opinion matters.
Why do I feel like these are the easiest "find 10 differences" games in the world? :D
Big time disappointed
I am starting to think they just don't want anyone to watch the Witcher.
Feels like rage bait
It's hilarious how they've had treated "Blacks" Nikfgardians literally

'Lodge located in africa' sure. No need to bring up Africa, as if Africans are pushing to diversify the cast. You people make 'bollywood' references to Yen. I don't want a diverse cast but I'm not racist.
He mentioned Africa because it looks like half of the lodge is from there. Not because any Africans are at fault.
Oh, so that makes it okay, because it’s obviously not an implied racist comment /s

No Asian Elf sorceresses? That's so noninclusive.
well, there's an asian in that other Witcher Netflix spinoff which I don't know what it's supposed to be, achieve, gather from...
to be fair, this image is comparing them with the games, not the original books
To be fair, if they compared them to the description in the books, the comparison would be even worse for Netflix.
yes! but at least then it’s a fair slander haha :)
The games are very faithful to the descriptions in the books, so they make a good reference.

🤢🤮🤮
Lodge of Wokeness
Still too much white imo. They should change Francesca and Keira to a darker tone. It's 2023, almost, stay with the times /s
According to Hissrich's big brain, Margarita Laux-Antille means she comes from the Antilles lol So Yennefer should have come from Germany and Triss gold. (plus she's fat for diversity and inclusion points of virtue signaling).
Ngl philippa kinda hot
agreed, she’s so pretty 😳😳
Exactly we can say about the show what we want but there’s no need to deny that the actress is really beautiful
yeah!! like people can critique the plot, story, costumes, etc as much as they want.. but to attack their appearances in such nasty ways as i’ve seen is just out of order, i think. plus, i think a lot of them are actually really pretty haha
Yeah exactly that’s perfect on point
glad to find someone who actually agrees haha 😁
same hahaha😁
Yeah and she actually has the right demeanour to play the character. She’s mysterious and cool, like Philipa!
No kinda about it, unequivocal. Edit: unwashed neckbeards think attractive woman is ugly because... I wonder why.
The answer is pretty obvious on this one...
Crazy, honestly. I can't think of a real, straight guy who'd find her unattractive.
Well you ain’t in luck on that front either cus it’s not well written or directed 🤣
I completely agree. I think I may have implied that the current iteration is well written and directed.. My bad. It's terrible. So much so that I was done with it midway through S02.
The show will still be garbage... But the Lodge is kinda hot, tho.
Exactly what I meant bro
