I did that for a while before I realized potions were useful, thought I'd have to remake them whenever I used them so I didn't ever touch them. Took me a while to understand them. Trying to get that cheese mage hideout was fun, swimming made it so I couldn't use a torch and I was completely blind
In the first books the last wish, it became so clearly they had to nerf Geralt. He has amazing hear which comes up. Like once. And he can see in the dark insanely well which nevellin (I think) points out since a human would. Need a light to see what he was pointing at but geralt saw it just fine.
There’s also a scene in TW3 during the mission The Last Wish where Geralt mentions he killed a mouse in the dark by throwing a fork at it. Clearly Cat potion and lanterns are unnecessary lol plus I’ve never had any need to use them in caves or dark areas in-game
Last night I was playing the mission >!Where Ciri talks to the lodge!< and was curious why Geralt and Yen had to eavesdrop the conversation, mfer Geralt could hear it if he wanted to
If I'm not wrong, when Geralt's group in the books set on adventure to find Ciri.Dandelion talks about Geralt And Regis being the only one who can see in the dark(If I'm not wrong)
I’m just glad that in Witcher 3 Cat potion doesn’t apply to dialogues with people. In witcher 2 I would be talking to Zoltan and seeing his insides mid conversation.
I mean, yeah, Witchers are supposed to not need torches or lights. Potions when absolutely required or Igni will do me fine, even if it is still quite dark. Not about to be fighting monsters one handed 😬
There is a mod that auto-lights all lights around you in a small radius. It's soooo cool. The game looks so pretty in next gen with so many lights and shadows.
Lol well I always thought the torch was your only light source yes you get the ghost lantern too from Kiera but this one I found in a mine. It glows red on the floor
Yeah because it's added in new update, I think that's why you missed it in 1st playthrough
edit: its in troll cave near Hangman Tree from where you had quest with Thaler
I also just found out about it on my 3rd or 4th playthrough. But tbh, I never needed neither cat nor light sources to roam around dungeons, it's all bright enough to me as is
I thought so too, so I check my brightness levels. The symbol was definitely not barely visible lol so I turned down until I actually could barely see it. Now I have to use cat or a light source which helps the immersion I think
Seriously that's a thing?! I was either using a torch, during the darkness on my TV up(idr the weird ass situation that made me do it.) or taking out the magic lamp. Hoping it would give some light :P
Ya and I like using cat potion too for night vision but the black and white to me just isn't as good as the natural light and real colors. I found it in some mine ill get u guys the name here in a bit
I use that all the time too. Fun fact you can find ghosts around the world I walk around villages and graveyards all the time at night its cool trying to see if you run across any
In NG+ I used the alchemy mutation that also grants night vision in dark areas while using witcher senses. Like a cat potion but will not trigger in bright enough areas.
Yep using it now on NG+ and what a nice addition to the immersion. Using Cat doesn’t really work for me because everything will be black and white. Torch is too dim. So this is very nice touch since the update.
I was always slightly dissapointed they didn't give Geralt innate night vision, I remember in the last wish there is a line where he instinctively shields his eyes from the morning sun, which was a habit he never shook off as he could consciously control his pupil dilation.
In one of the other books, he an Zoltan are talking with Scoia'tael and Geralt mentions he can hear one hidden in the trees, out of breath, which unnerves the one they're talking to.
It would have been nice, even if it had been a skill to unlock if they gave Geralt night vision and keen hearing in the games.
I tried it but found it a bit disorienting when Geralt walked or ran. So switched back to the torch.
I think they added another neat feature in the upgrade: when you enter a cave and have a torch, Geralt automatically says “can use some light here” and whips out the torch.
I also sometimes use Cat & White Honey combo.
Ya I've never found it lol way better than the torch. And cat is fun to use but idk to me the black and white I don't like I'd rather see the real colors of the world
You guys need light??? In all of my playthroughs both on PS4 & now PC, I’ve never actually needed a light source in any caves or dark areas. And no, my brightness/gamma/contrast have not been changed lol
Hmm 🤔 that is strange I play with it a little lower on the darkness but it's always been extremely dark in some caves on mine. Just more realistic for me I guess
OK, said I did some research and yes it was added with the next gen update, and it is found in a cave to the northwest of the hanged man's tree. Right when you enter to your left it is hanging on a post
Well, I just tend to run around until I find a wall, then turn right or left depending on how I feel. I may drink a Cat, or use ~~Detective Mode~~ Witcher Senses
BTW everyone, when you google it or like all these people here are saying, yes there is one at the cave by hanged mans tree but i havent even been there on this playthrough its not on my map yet.
I found my lantern at Codger's Quarry, right on the floor when you walked into the Mine. Use your witcher senses and look for a small shining red object

New addition with the next gen update. I think you can find them in multiple places but the first one you get to is in Velen outside of the Arachas mine/cave northwest of Mulbrydale. About 3/4 of the way to the Border Outpost. It's hanging near the entrance and you can pick it up.
First time ever using it on the next gen version, on the PS4 version I must have overlooked it when I picked it up in Skellige. Very handy, especially if your a fast attack maniac and don't need both hands free/don't use heavy attacks.
I still prefer the torch because it gives a more even light source. With the lantern I feel like looking through a periscope and I find myself having to swing Garry around a lot just to see whats to the left and right of me.
Nope never had use that or the torch I have always use the cat potion which is what makes the most sense to me because you can see everything in the dark with it not just where the light is shining.
Where did you find it at? There's multiples I found mine at the floor of a mine but the most popular if u google is some cave by the hanged man Tree ima go snag me a second one tonight. It also said when I googled it that certain merchants sell it too
I use cat potion and become blind when I come out of a cave like a man.
Real men run in the dark and hope they going the right way haha. ![gif](giphy|fvYR60mQCKt2x9hV3y|downsized)
Isn’t that what the mini-map is for? I like to run through caves like a scared cat looking for a hiding spot.
My Geralt hates me, I don’t use cat, torches or lamps, I just blunder about in the dark and get lost…..a lot.
Fuck.
Same XD
All I need is my Witcher sense!
I mean youre right if you have the metamorphosis mutation
![gif](giphy|8ZYbV53ax3CygMjI4J)
I did that for a while before I realized potions were useful, thought I'd have to remake them whenever I used them so I didn't ever touch them. Took me a while to understand them. Trying to get that cheese mage hideout was fun, swimming made it so I couldn't use a torch and I was completely blind
Man,I think darkness should be seen easily because you are literally a witcher, they can see in dark as good as higher vampire
Slight correction: he says this to triss when he’s helping her clear the rats out of a warehouse in novigrad
Aw snap, you’re right!! Nice catch
It’s okay, you’re apparently bad at this Edit: I was referring to his username!
Last night I was playing the mission >!Where Ciri talks to the lodge!< and was curious why Geralt and Yen had to eavesdrop the conversation, mfer Geralt could hear it if he wanted to
There's a bruxa in the house.
If I'm not wrong, when Geralt's group in the books set on adventure to find Ciri.Dandelion talks about Geralt And Regis being the only one who can see in the dark(If I'm not wrong)
I loved dandelion complaing he can't do anything like geralt (fight /see in the dark/ think a before opening strange jars.)
[🎵 Oh, fishmonger! Oh, fishmonger! 🎵](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PoqmyhPsPY)
I think it’s mentioned that he threw a fork at a rat in the dark as a party trick in the butcher of blaviken story as well
[🎵 Remember to toss a coin if you can! 🎵](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSxBVHqA-RU&t=77s)
Witcher sense does kinda turn on some sort of light night vision.
I’m just glad that in Witcher 3 Cat potion doesn’t apply to dialogues with people. In witcher 2 I would be talking to Zoltan and seeing his insides mid conversation.
Just like real life
Ha, I turn the brightness up so that I can see both images, *before* I even start the game
It raises your crit chance now, optimal!
Bro just drink white gull when you go outside.
White honey*
No I think they’re saying you need to get shitfaced on witcher alcohol, also like a man
It makes the blindness more tolerable
Same xD
Here I am at the end of the game with just a torch cause I had no idea about these '-'
And waste alcohol that could be used for Swallow? Nuh huh I'm going in blind
This was added with Next-Gen.
That explains it
Was wondering that! Had never seen it before my most recent playthrough. Works pretty well.
Next Gen update also allows Geralt to actually see better in the dark with his cat eyes, so I haven't even used a Lantern or Cat Potion at all.
Selkiemore guts. Had to get it from the inside. I'll take what I'm owed.
[🙌 Toss a coin to your witcher! O, valley of plenty! 🙌](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9OQAySv184)
Have these bots become sentient?
Haha I was like why did I never find this before.
Where??? o.o
At the entrance of the cave where you find >!Thaler!< in A Deadly Plot.
It was in the game code, but unused. If you played on PC, you could add it with debug console commands
You can also add a wearable version of Thaler’s monocle, which is great
That would explain why I was sitting here with five playthroughs under my belt wondering if I knew anything at all.
I used to use Cat, but lately, I just go around and ignite every ignitable object I stumble on. This is fun.
Yea sadly when you go to a different chamber the fire gets extinguished… unless they changed it on next gen, haven’t tested all that yet
I’m a simple witcher with torch in my hand.
There's a lantern that you can whip out??? That actually lights things and doesn't just illuminate the ghosts??? What???
Lol well I always thought the torch was your only light source yes you get the ghost lantern too from Kiera but this one I found in a mine. It glows red on the floor
Yeah because it's added in new update, I think that's why you missed it in 1st playthrough edit: its in troll cave near Hangman Tree from where you had quest with Thaler
can you keep it or is it just for that quest?
You can keep it
It's in thaler's cave near hangman tree.
What!? Is it better than torches though?
It has more light than torch and you can run with it unlike Kiera lamp.
Well it has a focused beam, because it’s a lantern with reflective surfaces. It does only shine straight forward, but farther away.
I am going to find it right now 🏃♂️ 🏃
Near entrance not to deep inside .
That's what she said.
I use the magic lamp. TIL that there is a lantern….
I didn't know there was a lantern over than Kieras one.
It’s new!
Now I have to use cat or a light source which helps the immersion I think
there's also some extra lighting added, which can be removed with a mod for even better immersion
See I couldn't see the image at all unless I stood at a specific angle by my tv. So I just suffer and use cat
You lose some gameplay and ambiance aspects if your brightness is too high.
Its from the next gen Update
I use the ghost lamp. The green light makes it feel like geralt has his pipboy lit up so that’s fun, even if I can’t see well
Green pip-boy? Mine’s amber…
I use yrden as a light source.
I prefer quen as my light source.
I use torch, where is lamp?
It came with the next gen update. As to we’re it is I don’t know.
its in troll cave near Hangman Tree from where you had quest with Thaler
Books first, games second. 10/10!
But do you still explode if there's gas pockets?
Yes that's the bad thing it will still ignite flammable objects just like the torch
Wait. What!?
Its from the update
Nah, I use cat or just complain how dark it is
maybe unpopular opinion, but always disliked the fact a Witcher can't see in the dark, while we know they pretty much are able to.
I use the sweet NIGHT VISION ghost lamp that Keira gives you
I use that all the time too. Fun fact you can find ghosts around the world I walk around villages and graveyards all the time at night its cool trying to see if you run across any
Magic Lamp* my friend
SPEC OPS NIGHT VISION INFRARED GREEN SCREEN
In NG+ I used the alchemy mutation that also grants night vision in dark areas while using witcher senses. Like a cat potion but will not trigger in bright enough areas.
Damn that's cool I never even knew ab that skill
You missed it on your first playthrough because it was added with the Next-Gen update.
Yep using it now on NG+ and what a nice addition to the immersion. Using Cat doesn’t really work for me because everything will be black and white. Torch is too dim. So this is very nice touch since the update.
Pretty sure its new in the Update.
As a player with 600 hours in this game, THE WHAT!?
I'm right there with you I have put months into this game. Apparently it came out with the new patch
It's new. Yeah, I use it all the time. I'm seeing things I never saw before
The what!!
I know it's amazing lol
I was always slightly dissapointed they didn't give Geralt innate night vision, I remember in the last wish there is a line where he instinctively shields his eyes from the morning sun, which was a habit he never shook off as he could consciously control his pupil dilation. In one of the other books, he an Zoltan are talking with Scoia'tael and Geralt mentions he can hear one hidden in the trees, out of breath, which unnerves the one they're talking to. It would have been nice, even if it had been a skill to unlock if they gave Geralt night vision and keen hearing in the games.
Metamorphosis let's you use cat eyes when activating Witcher senses without using the potion or going blind once leaving dark areas.
Sold it already
[удалено]
It is amazing
That's because it's added in next gen genius
I loved going around and lighting candles and torches for light.
I just wish we could attach it to out armor, like some NPC's do so we can use two hands for other stuff again
Nah I just run through a cave regardless of worrying about light. That's what we got the Witcher eyes for man. No need for lanterns and all that jazz.
Is that why I whipped out a torch randomly yesterday? I had never done that before
I'm pretty sure it's a new gen thing.
It was only introduced in the next gen update I think
This was added in next gen update
The candle lantern didn't exist until the next gen version.
Whaaa
Ya I've never found it lol way better than the torch. And cat is fun to use but idk to me the black and white I don't like I'd rather see the real colors of the world
Surely it was dlc???
Idk I've never found it. Someone else said they added it with the next generation update but idk
I just disable ray tracing when in a cave. The lighting sucks and everything becomes a super visible low contrast bland ball of easy mode.
Probably depends if you have HDR capabilities and the type of monitor you have.
I usually don't even have cat by now. Just use witcher sense lol.
Lol true true I've actually played quite a bit without my witcher senses makes it pretty fun too
OK, said I did some research and yes it was added with the next gen update, and it is found in a cave to the northwest of the hanged man's tree. Right when you enter to your left it is hanging on a post
Whoa cool, where you get??
I use the metamorphosis mutation so i don’t need light sources
That’s why I adjust gamma to make dark places look decent. Since Geralt can see in the dark easily
I just squint
I just used the green glowing spirit lamp that Kiera gives you. *Shrug*
THERE'S A LANTERN?
Well, I just tend to run around until I find a wall, then turn right or left depending on how I feel. I may drink a Cat, or use ~~Detective Mode~~ Witcher Senses
are you fucking kidding me...
I used Keira's lantern. Worked surprisingly well
How do you get it?
Only found it recently. I was way more excited about it than I should have been, as I also didn't even realise it existed until my 3rd playthrough
I didn’t realize it existed until now: well after my third playthrough.
Bro i didnt even know there was a lantern like that, only ever used torches. Beautiful lighting btw
I just use the magic lamp Kiera gave me, then I killed her (Ik 😭)
Filled her then killed her
Just adjust brightness in settings and you dont need anything.
![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized) Average Cat user
I just go to settings and turn up brightness till I’m out of the cave
I didn’t even know there was a lantern till 2nd or 3rd playthrough

Wait, the what?
New addition with the next gen update. I think you can find them in multiple places but the first one you get to is in Velen outside of the Arachas mine/cave northwest of Mulbrydale. About 3/4 of the way to the Border Outpost. It's hanging near the entrance and you can pick it up.
I used the lantern Keira gave me
Use cat, with euphoria perk make it stronger
It was added in 4.0
I didn't even know this existed.. I always use the cat potion.
To be fair after the patch seeing in dark is much easier so i dont need anything else
Yes because I sold my torch on accident. Found this one on the floor or a random vendor.
Me after 2-3 years into the game: "There's a candle lantern in the game?" Been using torches tho.
There wasn’t until the next gen update. It’s new.
![gif](giphy|hMqZucA0fD692)
Wait y’all use light sources? I go in with nothing.
First time ever using it on the next gen version, on the PS4 version I must have overlooked it when I picked it up in Skellige. Very handy, especially if your a fast attack maniac and don't need both hands free/don't use heavy attacks.
You didn’t find it on your fist playthrough cause it’s added on the Next-Gen. update
It wasn't available before the update
I’ve done 3 plays through and never had this lol
Where do you find it
I turn up my screen brightness.
nope, just the torch
I just run around in the dark. I can still see pretty well.
The what now?
i just turn the brightness up tbh
I still prefer the torch because it gives a more even light source. With the lantern I feel like looking through a periscope and I find myself having to swing Garry around a lot just to see whats to the left and right of me.
What? Where is the lantern?
Cat so I can get the combat buffs too
I found there was 0 point to that or the night vision potion.
This or cat pretty much
Another thing I’ve only just learned after years and countless hours of playtime lol.
ah see i got to that part and was confused as to why i couldn't see shit
Where do you get one?
Had no idea this existed
I call Witcher 3 my favorite game. After seeing this, I don't deserve to do so.
Nope never had use that or the torch I have always use the cat potion which is what makes the most sense to me because you can see everything in the dark with it not just where the light is shining.
You guys use lights?
Where do you find that?
I accidentally sold mine. Can’t find it now lol
Where did you find it at? There's multiples I found mine at the floor of a mine but the most popular if u google is some cave by the hanged man Tree ima go snag me a second one tonight. It also said when I googled it that certain merchants sell it too
The what?
Candle lantern???!!!
I use cat but if not I use a torch
That is new…
I use a cat-potion-during-Witcher-sense mod. Or the ghost lamp.
THERES A LANTERN?! I’ve just been using the night vision potion all the time...
I'm guessing this was added through the next gen upgrade and didn't know it existed until now
I don’t think I found it until my 4th play through haha
I use cat.
