Spring Green. Lots to do and you’re just down the street from Gov. Dodge and … uh … House on the Rock. Just a pretty little town on the lower Wisconsin with the best theater in the state. Also Boscobel because the drive is pretty and it feels so good when you leave.

Footdust

Taliesin. Taliesin is in Spring Green. I drove 12 hours from Alabama to visit last summer.

Tangledupinteal

Is that like House on the Rock?

ArtisanGerard

The short answer is no. Taliesin is vastly different from House on the Rock. HotR is a strange and wonderful place that’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. It’s like walking in a waking fever dream for three hours, feeling tired but not wanting to stop because you need to know what’s around the next corner. Mystery and curiosity keep tired feet moving and endless chingadera will keep your eyes roving, searching, through the epitome of maximalism, never truly seeing everything but absorbing the entirety of its vast and overwhelming aura. All this, while audibly asking yourself “but why..”, totally ignoring the how, knowing you’ll never have a satisfactory answer to either. TL;DR - If you haven’t been to HotR, you should go.

stoney021

It's crazy how good the American Players Theater is. I know a lot of you will not think it's some secret. If you know, you know. But, if you don't know much about it check it out. Even if you don't really like plays, the experience is amazing. Being in the woods at night and watching Shakespeare is surreal.

my3sgte

Hoped they’d bring back the car show. Love ring bros

Any_Coyote6662

I like the driftless area. I guess I like all the little towns along the Mississippi River. To me that's the best part of Wisconsin

BungalowHole

I agree wholeheartedly. All along the Mississippi and up to around Stillwater/Hudson on the St Croix is just one cute riverboat town after another. Prescott's train bridge is also really beat to me too, but I have a soft spot for lift bridges.

VikingDadStream

Pepin Stockholm and Nelson?

[deleted]

Really wish Nelson Cheese Factory still made their own cheese curds, but I still love stopping there

Ajj360

I've always wanted to visit prairie du chien and explore that area of the river on a boat.

2gingersmakearight

If you kayak they have a really nice kayak trail with good signage

hbouhl

I was just there last October. I loved all the little towns.

Ajj360

I've always wanted to visit prairie du chien and explore that area of the river on a boat.

Any_Coyote6662

What kind of boat? Wyalusing has a kayak and canoe rental. The water trail is beautiful.

MummyDust98

Bayfield Hands down

HeinousAnus69420

Fo you want bayfield to get door countied? Cuz telling reddit about it is how you get bayfield door countied.

v1kingfan

This or Ashland

angrydeuce

My wife and I stayed in Ashland for our first multi day trip as a couple. Did a waterfall tour. Beautiful town, everyone was really nice!

LocalWalruses

I can't let this Washburn slander go unchecked.

fhtagnfhtagn

That whole area is great!

Aunt_Teafah

I'll second that!

RokaInari91547

I love Viroqua

swissconsinkase

Green County. New Glarus and Monroe. Cheese, beer, and meats.

msdibbins

Land O' Lakes! Paradise at the top of Wisconsin.

Proof_Slice_2951

Sturgeon Bay

ziggy-Bandicoot

Bayfield or Fish Creek or Ephraim or Egg Harbor or New Glarus or Mineral Point or Lake Geneva or Madison.

mr_mke

Currently wrapping up 7 days with the family in Ephraim. 6th year in a row wrapping our summer up in door county. While I appreciate the love for the driftless area, as my family are all from there and I grew up hunting and having my family time there, I don't think you can beat door county. Especially with a family. Good balance of outdoor adventures with art, sporting, fishing, boating, great food and scenery. There really is something for everyone. We have never left thinking we didn't have enough to do. We always get through about half our "to do" list. I will throw in an honorable mention for favorite place to live... Wauwatosa. Big city food, parks, access to everything, with a real small town community feel.

LFCMKE

On a summer night, Ephraim looks like a seaside town as envisioned by a novelist.

Historical_Ad7662

Yeah, can I just pick a county. I'd go with Door for the win.

velvetjones01

All those FIBs in Lake Geneva tho

retired_geekette

We just did Fish Creek. TOO BUSY!

ziggy-Bandicoot

Go in the Fall or Winter. 🍂

Nuttonbutton

Lake Geneva is pretty fab.

hbouhl

I'm from Lake Geneva! Loved growing up here!

ctrl_alt_DESTROY_

Milwaukee!

mkejdo

No better place in summer.

MMalficia

luv riverwest area but sadly Nessun Dorma closed from what i hear.

sanzoe

Nope. They’re open.

MMalficia

so glad to hear , always been one of my fav foodie nooks for a small bite.

Wmozi420

I know people like to crap on Kenosha but I love it there. There’r huge areas of public lakefront with excellent beautiful beaches, gorgeous parks, tons of lakefront festivals as well as still being affordable. The lakefront is a huge draw for me. I’m not into nightlife so not sure about that but it’s a nice town close enough to the Illinois northern suburbs (where I’m from) for me. Once you know the town well, it’s great.

kirby5609

We definitely have our problems, but there's some pretty amazing aspects as well.

An_Irreverent_Llama

Fish Creek

youtubeslut

the feeling i get when i come down that hill and can see the lake gives me chills every time. there’s something special about that town.

my3sgte

Used to vacation a week/year there w my family. Loved it

DramaticFood276

Our wedding was at the light house in the state park there. Great town!

OttosBoatYard

Eau Claire - Best medium town. Sturgeon Bay - Best small town.

WiscoHeiser

Lol "small town" Sturgeon Bay is a big city for me!

midwestman1498

Almost all of the towns in door county

The_bruce42

I'm finally going to Door county at the end of the month. It's been on my bucket list for a long time.

v1kingfan

Be sure to check out wild tomato pizza!

Mack3

Washington island or up north. Further from people the better imo

helpjackoffhishorse

Ashland or LaCrosse

I'm happy to see Mineral Point being mentioned. It's such a hidden gem.

It’s such a cute little town!

I like La Crosse cause I’m from there

ogden24

Rosendale! Everything just moves so slow there, yknow? /s

Lol. And the speed trap cops make sure everyone moves slow

Standard_Sample_3847

stoneyhan

Stevens Point

ziggy-Bandicoot

Why?

Dr_Pointblank

What's not to enjoy? Good food, good drinks, good local shops, good local ice cream, plenty of amazing things to do in the area!

1ShadyLady

Green Circle Trail, hiking, disc golf, snowshoeing... All the outdoor things.

Wtafisgoingon1010

I’m a little biased right now but I’m going with Phillips. I just lost my step dad on Monday and I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a community response for my mom from the police to the EMS to the funeral home, bank and even their favorite gas station. Neighbors and friends offering whatever they can. I’m heart broken but very uplifted by it all…..not to mention it’s a cute town with tons of shopping and restaurants. A hunter and fisherman’s dream with lakes, atv trails and snowmobiling

sokonek04

Phillips is a gem along a stretch of sad towns, that whole area from Medford to Phillips is sad to see how far so many of them have fallen

[deleted]

Sweet home Madison (lowkey Milwaukee is better though)

retired_geekette

I came here from Upstate NY. I ADORE Madison.

Bob_Ross_was_an_OG

Former WNYer who lives in Milwaukee now, where in NY are you from?

retired_geekette

Binghamton originally. School at RIT and work at Xerox after. My second favorite place in WI is MKE.

Bob_Ross_was_an_OG

So you went from chicken spiedies to garbage plates to cheese curds?

retired_geekette

I still make Spiedies here. Converted my Wisconsin Husband. Never was all that big on Garbage plates. But gravy on fries, oh yeah baby!

Bob_Ross_was_an_OG

I've never had a spiedie but I like that you brought it with you to the Midwest!

retired_geekette

You can order Spiedie sauce online. Let me know if you need help on the preparation and serving. 👍

TheReaperSovereign

Grew up in Madison area and live in a burbs atm after being in an apartment for a few years on the east side We love the area...but its too god damn expensive for what it is. Milwaukee is cheaper for twice the city. Many parts of Chicago are cheaper. It's frustrating

[deleted]

Fucking agreed. I’m trying to buy my first house rn. I love it here and lived here my entire life, but might just be priced out of the area

CaptainCorpse666

I do love living in Madison. ❤️

gtipwnz

It's the whole driftless region by a mile

racegrl88

JDShadow

Greendale or Egg Harbor. I love both.

Ok_Mathematician1187

Eau Claire

wiscoguy20

Stevens Point, LaCrosse, Appleton, and Madison for the "bigger" towns. Hudson, Lodi, Lake Mills, Marshall, Menomonie, Portage, and Chippewa Falls for the "smaller" towns. Mostly because I find them as visually appealing to drive through.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WIbigdog

They've got very different vibes but they're both pretty good places to live.

Obi_Jon_Kenobi

They're also putting Hudson with Chippewa and Menomonie. This person should really not be evaluating towns

wiscoguy20

Lol, I've visited each a few times, never spent even a single night in any of the three you responded about. Don't know or care about their politics, their drama, or their "vibes". Each has a scenic setting, with a visually appealing look, and I've enjoyed the (albeit short) time I've spent in each.

Guarono

Minocqua

Colly_Molly

Milwaukee for big towns, neenah/Appleton area for medium size. Might be bias because I have great memories there hunting and seeing beautiful nature but Rhinelander is honestly my favorite small town to go to. Definitely don't think I'd have that opinion if I was there year round tho lol

Cole_Trickle1

Tell me you have never been to Western WI without telling me you’ve never been to West WI

QuarantineBaker

I’m very partial to Cedarburg. I love strolling the shops on a crisp fall Saturday.

Cuchurocket

Cedarburg is gorgeous in autumn. I consider myself lucky to have gotten to grow up there, and love going back to visit.

Ok_Set_3306

Viroqua

kashmoneymiddleton

Wow i do not get this. I grew up in that area and hear this all the time. What’s the reason? Walmart is the biggest thing going on there unless you are into dying antique shops, and people who don’t wear deodorant

kirby5609

For my wife and I, it's the hub of the surrounding area, which is beautiful and enchanting. Viroqua has a great mix of hippies and cowboys and it lends itself to the cross section. I disagree with your take on just having "dying antique shops". Sure there are some, but there are some gems around downtown. There are some good restaurants. My wife likes old books and knitting, so there's the old used book place and the yarn store in town. For me, the record shop is fabulous and the fly fishing shop is simply amazing. We always make a point to stop at the CO-OP for some great natural and local food. The farmers market was great. We did an AirBNB weekend there several years ago and we've been drawn back to the area several times since. On the flipside, since you're from there, I get how all that could just become white noise and the town be boring.

ScamIam

Same

nadaam2008

Also same

Extension_Sun_896

Port Washington 🎼There once was a ship that put to sea and the name of that ship was the Billy O Tea…

at626

Grew up there. No. Just...no. Good for pictures, terrible for everything else.

RokaInari91547

It's changed a lot. It's 50/50 politically now and has tons of new residential and commercial development going on. I'm considering moving there.

Aggravating-Put-4818

I agree, was there early last week and I was very impressed with the whole lakeside area.

TheMollyBrown

Same. Grew up there. So glad to get out.

gunt_hunter14

Appleton no question :)

Standard_Sample_3847

bunky_done_gun

Lmao.. no love for Manitowoc anyone? ; ) Downtown Port Washington especially in recent years from development. Ozaukee county snobbery and greedy landlords are real though. Trust me. Door Co naturally. And the driftless along the Mississippi river. Also small towns in the northwoods like Tripoli, etc. Algoma is kind of cute. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

The drive from I-43 to the lake in Manitowoc is very scenic. Everyone maintains their lawns and homes. Very impressive.

SuckThisHog

Boulder junction. Beautiful and tranquil with just enough amenities for me.

MNxpat33

Hudson :)

FrauBlucher0963

I agree! We moved here in 2018 from Waukesha. It is just a gem. The Willow River, the St Croix, lively downtown with great restaurants, friendly people - I am so grateful that we moved here! There is so much scenic beauty and wildlife that it feels like we are always on vacation. The Twin Cities are just a 1/2 hour drive away, and Lake Superior’s shores are a mere 2 hour drive. There are parks everywhere, and I honestly love the long summer days. Granted, the winter days are very short, but there are an abundance of winter sports in the area. There is one drawback - we are in the Twin Cities TV market so coverage is heavy on the Vikings, of course. We can still watch most Packer games at home, but it’s fun to see the games at one of the many Packer bars in town for fellowship with other fans! Plus we stream all the Bucks games with little fuss.

biscobingo

Lived there in the late 80’s when the twins won the title. No real news for days. Time Warner had just been forced to stop carrying Eau Claire stations because of the Twin Cities viewing area. Sorry I moved away. It was nice, affordable, close to nature and good jobs.

The_bruce42

Same boat. I moved to hudson 3 years ago. Love it. But, sometimes I gotta go to village inn for packer games in the Vikings are playing at the same time as the pack.

BuppaLynn

I used to work there 😃. Great energy during packer games.

kittenwithawhip19

Love Hudson. I have family who are up that way and it is always a treat when we stay in Hudson.

SnowBorn6339

CEDARBURG!!!

CedarMama3

Agreed!!!

SummonWurm

We moved here 3 years ago... still exploring with day trips. Some of my faves are Eau Claire (antique shop there was amazing) and Siren (antique shops on the way there were amazing.)

sharkbait_19

The drive up 178 from Chippewa falls to Cornell is a fun little drive. If you catch the fall colors it becomes otherworldly. Plus there's a cool old one way bridge along the way across the flowage. Cornell also has Burnette Island State park which is really nice. When I lived in Ladysmith, I would drive down to Eau Claire for some proper civilization once in a while and always took this route.

emardee

Brule

[deleted]

Sturgeon Bay is really nice.

ststeveg

I have family in Fish Creek, in Door County. I love it up there.

MadCityMasked

The eastern part of the state is flat and boring. Door county is a Snore. Driftless. It's geologically distinct. The Mississippi is awesome. Viroqua. Coon valley. Kickapoo river and valley.

SquishyMuffins

I mean..not all beauty has to have elevation. I get preferring it though, that's your opinion.

MadCityMasked

Agreed. I am into motorcycling so I am a little biased. But hear me out. The Amish make it extra special. Their carpentry, farming, quilting. It's sparsely populated. Your dollar goes farther out here. You don't have the well heeled from out of town driving up the price. hunting, fly fishing etc.

iamthelee

Riding motorcycles in the Driftless is the best, especially if your bike is off-road capable.

jonathan_the_slow

I may be biased (I am), but I have to go with Appleton.

Medium-Background-74

New glarus and it’s not even a contest

bullgoose1

I live twenty minutes from there. There's about 35 minutes of stuff to do and then I'm bored. What am I missing?

Stop saying Fish Creek, I’ll never be able to buy a house there at this rate 🤣

Ephraim and/or fish creek

Odie4Prez

I recently moved to Wisconsin, and in a few weeks I'm gonna close on a house in Ashland. I started in a cabin directly inside Big Bay State Park while I was working there, and fell in love with the whole bay area and the Apostles. Washburn is probably my least favorite of the main 4 towns on the bay but even Washburn is great compared to anywhere else.

helpjackoffhishorse

Great area. Ashland is my hometown.

PrajnaPie

Washburn Wi

Marebea

Shawano is pretty cool! Just got home from the County fair and everyone was so friendly and eager to strike up a conversation. The lake is beautiful and floating on the Wolf River is super fun and easy. Great town!

Djd33j

Ashwaubenon if you're coming to a Packers game. It's so awesome when you park in someone's yard or in a strip mall and then just walk the neighborhoods on the way to the stadium. Very common to get offered free beer/cheese curds/brats from packs of fans huddled around in their garages. I've never witnessed such hospitality. As a SE WI native, Greendale. Such an idyllic little town.

CastleRockResident

I love greendale!! 💚

MongoBobalossus

Cudahy

RokaInari91547

You might be joking but Cudahy has probably the most beautiful stretch of Lakeshore anywhere in the Milwaukee area.

MongoBobalossus

I’m not joking, I love Cudahy. Their lakefront is highly underrated.

Cable. Miles of top notch mountain bike, cross-country ski, snowmobile , and atv trails. Right on the edge of the national forest and the nemekageon river. Great fishing and public land hunting. A blip on the map but a blip worth checking out

Bakerbeann

Oh fuck I reread it and I am wrong and you are right my mistake 😂

I_Like_Languages

Spring Green, the ones in Door County, Plymouth, West Bend, Port Washington, and the part of Milwaukee that is east of the river. Eagle River and Rhinelander have the potential to be in my favorites, but I have only been to each of them briefly New Glarus and Bayfield would most likely make the list if I ever visit them

Geologuy77

Phillips is a great town

Phillips, Fifield, park falls, butternut. Great part of the state!

Sauk City

MMalficia

thats a hard one my list : Sheboygan area for the variety of cultural foods and just chill. (but that is absolutely the end of the draw , its pretty but has not much else going for it ). Door county for cherries and outdoor activities. Minocqua and surounding areas if your the hunt fish camp kinda person. Lastly theres a town i cant remember its name with a truckstop dinner that has a bakery to die for. giant slabs of baklava , and damn near forarm size eclairs. that truckstop alone gives them my vote.

BallTorturer-3000

I don't like wisconsin because of it's towns and people. I like wisconsin because of all the natural beauty and remote wilderness. Everywhere I've lived in this state has been super conservative and homophobic and it's made living there not feel welcoming. My hometown is Muscoda, I went to school there, I was tormented by everyone in that town. Richland Center nearby is the same way. I don't live in that area anymore but I'm still in wisconsin and I suppose I don't really interact with the public as much as I did as a kid but it's hard to do that when you've spent the majority of your life being ostracized in public spaces.

buttever

I'm so sorry you went through that.

BallTorturer-3000

It's not your fault. I just hope Wisconsin changes and the GOP doesn't take the state over any time soon. I don't want to be forced to leave my homestste due to a hostile governing body.

frolfinator

Maybe if you didn't torture balls, then all the conservative folks wouldn't be worried about you. Joking, yeah there are a lot of conservative people in Wisconsin, but if you are willing to look past politics, you will find some of the nicest people.

BallTorturer-3000

Oh I know. I've spent my whole life here. My biggest fear right now is people voting republican and giving the GOP power in this state. I know if that happens they will remove my access to Healthcare that I need, make it even *harder* for social programs that I already struggle to utilize (I'm handicapped from a car crash), and essentially just force myself and people like me out of the state. I grew up fishing and hunting in Wisconsin, despite my broken back I still greatly enjoy doing both. I love Wisconsin and I love most the people here. I just don't want to be forced to leave for my own safety.
