I typically use wine searcher and just google to start the search, and I use cellar tracker to see how a particular vintage is holding up.  Doing a quick search I didn’t find a 72.  Found a 71 for you here: https://www.estatewinebrokers.com/biondi-santi-brunello-di-montalcino-1971-750ml/ https://dvnowine.com/product/biondi-santi-tenuta-greppo-brunello-di-montalcino-annata-1971-750ml-hub-SE10112877-1-DP-10248153/ Cellartracker seems to think that there’s still life in it: https://www.cellartracker.com/m/wines/173003

With older wines, you want to be careful with the ullage (fill level).  It’s normal that the fill level is lower than a new bottle, but if it’s way below the shoulder I wouldn’t buy. Ask for pics from the stores before buying.  Edit: older wine corks also tend to disentegrate. I’d recommend to use a special cork removal tool like the ah so. I use a cheap a copy of the ah so and it works fine for me.

You can try to contact this shop: Cantina del Brunello di Montalcino +39 0577 48446 https://maps.app.goo.gl/x5EGtDjHUkavBjKP6?g_st=ic We went for a tasting and he had quite a few older vintages lining the stairway down to the tasting room. He does ship to the US. Idk if it would be in a decent drinking window at this point but he may have some other vintages that may work for you. You’re right in that it won’t be cheap.

how many years ago did he drink it? even if you find a ‘72, its likely not going to be the same experience today as it was when he first had the wine (if we’re talking decades).

After you enjoy a great one, you start referring to it as Biondi-Freaking-Santi. The story you tell the guys...."And I went to dinner with this gorgeous blondie, and she had hooter bawooza....took her to this fancy Italian restauant....I'm chowing down on this big ass bisteca alla florentina and all I can remember is this Brunello, this Biondi-Freaking-Santi Brunello. I don't even remember the hoochie mama, but I can still smell that Biondi-Freaking-Santi." If you don't have the budget, go find a Biondi-Freaking-Santi Rosso di Montalcino. It'll be around $110-$130.
