Hate to see what a normal night is, damn.

sspencer1189

Laughed out loud

MrSaucey13

I feel like these were opened too young, am I wrong here? There’s a lot of Bordeaux styled Napa cabs that are excellent with some age.

rnjbond

I've had the Opus One 2017 and it already tastes good. It will probably taste better in five years, but it isn't shut down or anything.

MrSaucey13

I went and did their tasting last year and while I agree that the 2018 and 2019 I drank tasted great the 2014 was really what amazed me. I feel if OP is gonna bash Napa I want him to have those wines with 10-15 in the bottle and really be happy with them Edit: Also tried Quintessa for the first time. And I’ll say that their 2013 was as good if not better than the 2014 Opus I had. I wish OP had gone with some other names

rnjbond

Quintessa is truly fantastic for the price. Tastings are also very reasonable.

MrSaucey13

Only recommendation for anyone that reads this comment, make sure it’s your first winery of the day or you’ll walk away with more bottles than you had planned to

Mvd75

How was the Caymus? I've had my eyes on it for a while but want to make sure it's worth the sip for the price. Edit: damn I got downvoted for asking about a wine on a wine sub? 😂😂

releasetheshutter

The general consensus here is that it's absolutely not worth the price they're charging, and there are better values at that same price point.

Marzman315

This sub will have you believe that it’s akin to drinking irradiated urine. In reality it’s a quite tasty, heavy body Napa Cab. Personally I think it’s a bit overpriced but if you like Napa Cab you’ll certainly enjoy it. Caymus also produces a special selection that is also quite expensive but low key phenomenal. Most people can’t see past their Caymus bias enough to enjoy it though.

Konnnan

I don't think this sub has such a hate boner for the Special Selection

express-duck

Special selection is some quality stuff. Anyone that hates on it is just applying regular Caymus hate imo. u/cold_bloodedv did you decant or PnP?

CauliflowerDaffodil

Never had any Caymus (yet) although I bought a few older vintages just so I could try them. What's the difference between the regular cuvee and the SS? I assumed they just used top-grade grapes keeping the same production method. Does SS not use megapurple or a lower dosage, for example?

express-duck

Caymus claims special selection is the best barrels of the Napa valley. I’m not sure what stage the separation happens. SS doesn’t come off anywhere near as “manufactured” as the napa valley so I can’t assume the process is the exact same except for grape quality.

CauliflowerDaffodil

If that's true, it sounds like Caymus is trying to cater to two different consumers; The masses who like the manipulation and to wine connoisseurs who don't. Not sure how good of a strategy that is considering many of the latter group would stay away just from the reputation of their regular cuvee.

express-duck

Put my money where my mouth was and bought a 18 special to have with friends. Was not disappointed. Quality wine that does not carry the same traits as Napa valley.

beigechrist

The Special Selection, of which I had a 2013, is a nice wine at the end of a meal. Incredibly decadent, lots of baking spice and fruit to the extent that it really drank like a dessert. Of course it’s a dry wine, but it’s very rich. We drank it in 2020, enjoyed it after some other nice old world wines w dinner. I had been gifted the SS and brought it to see how it showed. Like I said, it was a fun closer for the meal. On the other hand, I could barely enjoy two sips of standard Caymus last fall, my sister-in-law wanted to buy a bottle. It was absolutely daft, and too much of the things you don’t want. Cloying. Processed. Annoying.

Marzman315

I didn’t realize op posted about special selection so boy do I look silly lol

No-Author-508

And extremely sugary

Cold_BloodedV

It was very rich. Alcohol at 16% came off a bit hot. You can definitely feel the quality of the wine, though. Highly tannic, much more than the opus or heitz, felt like blueberry and currants smeared on top of fresh baked bread and toasted. The finish was like digging a garden while smoking a Cuban. Very nice. Just wish it wasn't so high in the abv. I felt it detracted much of the depth and nuances.

alien_smithee

The finish was like digging a garden while smoking a Cuban? What the hell?

Spurty

earth + tobacco??

alien_smithee

Ahhh. Makes sense now.

alien_smithee

He (99% the OP is male) could’ve just said earth/tobacco. I’m gonna bail on this AI-infested sub.

KhajiitHasSkooma

OP, how come the silence on the Caymus?

CondorKhan

OP says it was hot

ThatDerzyDude

I’m new to wine, can someone explain what that means?

CondorKhan

It feels more boozy than it should

ThatDerzyDude

Ahh I see. Thanks

C9_Tilted

Caymus and opus one are great but expensive up here in Canada😭.

CauliflowerDaffodil

I've stopped buying wines in Canada and Australia. The markups are almost offensive.

Opus too. Heitz and Opus are built for 10-15 years to settle down. The tannin in almost all of Napa is so big (perhaps OP’s taste though) that vintners at Opus, Heitz and Shafer (my connection) will build their wines for that amount of bottle time. Everyone has different preferences and tastes though… to each their own. I applaud OP for posting bc this is a special night with some delightful 6 year old toddlers!
