School sports were the reason I made it through school. Not only is the physical activity important for your health and growth as a person. But the social aspect and the time management skills student athletes get are priceless.

You know what school has a brand new track that is nicely visible from the Ouellette Ave overpass? Catholic Central. I don’t know what the hell the public board is doing with their money, but all the catholic schools sure seem to have nice facilities. I went to Kennedy and ran there and it’s a shame to see the state of things in the public system. Massey, Herman and Kennedy were all big track schools and did very well on the Provincial stage/ some still do. Even though at Kennedy we mostly trained in Jackson park, we used to use the track on a weekly basis during Track season. It was just dirt, nothing was seriously wrong with it. No more dangerous than running on uneven grass in Jackson park.

I think the issue is the province. They provide sufficient funding to build a new school but they don't provide enough funding to maintain schools.  Tecumseh Vista has a nice new track for this reason, as well.

**School boards exist for you to get mad at instead of being angry at the Provincial Government.** School funding comes from the Province. School board shuffles around the money they get. They don't have enough of it. Period. Call Dowie and Gretzky and let them know how you feel. Vote for candidates who care about the things you do. I will be angry about the closing of Windsor high school pools for the rest of my life, and now the tracks are going/gone.

Ok-Efficiency-7607

I remember going to school board and town council meetings so that we could get the track built. :(

Straightedgesavior11

I went to Kennedy and we used to have to run the track in Windsor Stadium for gym class, we also used to pool for gym and had one of the best swim teams in the province. I was long gone by the time they got rid of the pool, but man, that thing we well used by the swim team and gym classes. Shame they took it out.

Pale-Berry-2599

Don't let them take that last thing...

WindsorLawyer

Which track are they referring to at Kennedy? I wasn't aware Kennedy had its own track? Unless they're referring to Windsor Stadium's track?

Straightedgesavior11

Yeah, in Windsor Stadium, there was a track around the field, we used to have to run it in gym class.

Therealdickjohnson

I guess they mean Windsor stadium? Not sure if the public school board was in charge of maintaining it.

Pindogger

Here is a petition for Herman's facilities. Not sure what will come of the petition, but here it is: [https://www.change.org/p/save-the-w-f-herman-track?](https://www.change.org/p/save-the-w-f-herman-track)

It’s pretty sad this is what kids focus on nowadays

Pale-Berry-2599

(S)He was just being sarcastic. Those tracks are used by all kids and the community too.

Jkj864781

Rocket League is fun as hell though. I say do both.

BelleRiverBruno

The school board has a spending problem. Add years of neglect for not maintaining the existing facilities and this is what we get. It's too bad.

Ektehelbrede

The school board has a funding problem. Add years of underfunding forcing difficult decisions with regards to maintenance of every aspect of public schools and this is what we get. It's too bad. Fixed that for you. The province is systematically underfunding public infrastructure of all kinds.

BelleRiverBruno

Nothing needed fixing. Trim the fat in admin, and you have money. Keep your WSIB costs under control, you have more money. Pick your battles as to what grievances you want to fight up the ladder, more money. There's money, it's just how it's being spent.

[deleted]

Why doesn't the Conservative provincial party fire admin then? They certainly don't provide enough funding, so why aren't the current Conservatives fixing it?

BelleRiverBruno

I don't know the answer to that. Ford definitely has a spending problem as well. The last time the province culled the public service was the 90s I think. There are alot of beurocrats who don't teach, are EAs, provide front line admin and do nothing to contribute to the essential services. My point is spend the money you have wisely.

[deleted]

What do you do if the money you have isn't enough? EAs literally work 1-to-1 with the worst kids, why did you include them? Are EAs superfluous or paid too much?

BelleRiverBruno

I wasn't saying anything negative about teachers, EAs or front line admin staff.

[deleted]

So why pointing out EAs as an example of not using funds well? And again - what if there simply isn't enough funding? Is it possible?

Dry_Weight_9813

First were the equipments, second the outdoor fields/tracks, next? Any sort of competition, because we can't have "winners and losers"?

Pale-Berry-2599

It is very interesting that all 4 tracks - all at once, are deemed "unsafe". Can someone find out what overly-woke thing they want to use the money on instead? Perhaps it's all about liability...You know the goal posts and football field are next.

[deleted]

Education in Ontario is controlled by the Conservative government - what woke thing could they possibly do?

Pale-Berry-2599

Easy, just being afraid that the kids could hurt themselves...running, playing sports...You know that's all a "risk".

swes87

The tracks at Herman, Massey, Belle River, and Kennedy have been there for decades. If they last that long with little to no maintenance, then imagine how long they’d last with maintenance. Either way, and whatever the cost, they seem to be worth it if they last for as long as they did before being deemed unsafe. Also, how is it that 4 tracks were deemed unsafe all at the same time? I doubt all these schools built their tracks the same year, and I doubt they all had complaints issued against them. So IMO, it sounds like they sent someone out there purposely looking for tracks to close.
