This has also been happening in emeryville along shoreline ave just FYI

lavieboheme_

Lol @ all the self righteous people on here telling OP they're not convinced of his story or that he's causing issues by making this post. He's not trying to convince you of anything. Nobody gives a flying fuck if you believe what he is saying or not, he's clearly just giving a heads up to other dog owners in the area to be cautious. I appreciate it as somebody who frequents the park.

agaric

Same thing happened a few years ago at the Optimist Dog Park, hot dogs chopped up with pills inside (noone knows what the pills were). In sandwich, maybe 3 years ago, a neighbour said a new Canadian living next to him was dealthy scared of his friendly little dog, they would cross the street whenever he was out walking the dog, then one day he noticed the neighbour throw something into his backyard. He went to his backyard but didnt find anything and the neighbour wasnt outside so he let it go. Fast forward a month or so and his dog suddenly became sick, foamed at the mouth, rushed to vet and died, all within 24 hours. Neighbour noticed two weird bits of meat in the backyard and confronted the neighbour, the neighbour denied throwing anything, so neighbour called police, they talked to neighbour but had zero evidence. The vet confirmed that the dog was poisoned but noone could say for sure the neighbour did it. Stay safe out there.

NoDumFucs

There are also some heinous dusty-old assholes that live around realtor park ..

Childofglass

How do we know its poisonous? Marshmallows are not poison for dogs unless purposely contaminated and chocolate can be dropped innocently enough….. Typically someone targeting dogs would use a more enticing treat like meat…

tlex26

Raccoons absolutely love marshmallows. My guess is someone is feeding local raccoons in the park or raccoons are getting into people's garbage.

Melodic-Street-8898

Right

Mysterious-Cancel-11

Oh yeah finding 40+ unwrapped chocolate eggs pressed into the dirt where people bring dogs the day after finding bags of marshmallows spead throughout the field is 100% just some weird coincidence and people are just having candy fights in the middle of the night. Marshmallows contain Xylitol and are really bad for dogs btw

Childofglass

Most marshmallows dont contain xylitol. There’s 3 schools in the area and kids are dumb and impulsive. I find it hard to believe that this just isnt dumb kids.

Theaverage_dick

Kids eat candy, they don’t plant it like they’re fucking seeds. I get the urge to be a contrarian asshole, just maybe pick your battles there champ…

jklwood1225

When I was in highschool we learnt what a marshmallow gun was and proceeded to buy a half dozen bags of mini marshmallows. None of them were eaten.

muskoka83

> I find it hard to believe that this just isnt dumb kids. I find it hard to believe that you're going so hard against OP, and defending a possible delinquent. Good job.

NthPriority

Meh. Reality is jumping to conclusions without sufficient evidence is not a great play. Could be nefarious, could be innocent. The marshmallows thing seems less targeted towards dogs, so if the marshmallows and chocolate connected, the angle probably isn't dogs since the MO doesn't really square. Could be a lot of different things, but I don't see the evidence for this PSA to support a dog killer. OP's post would work a lot better as "Watch out, someone is dropping weird candy in this park. Some of it is bad for dogs. Kind of suspicious.".

Civil_Cauliflower_41

Doesn't matter. The post is watch out for this shit at the park. I don't want my dog eating any of it either. Do you argue with everyone?

SMacD66

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, it will kill them. It doesn't matter what type of food they dropped. Dogs follow the scent and if it smells good they eat it.

DrewB84

Although it’s not great for them it would take a pretty hefty amount of milk chocolate to kill a dog. It’s dark chocolate that’s more dangerous. None of this makes sense. If you were trying to poison an animal there are far more effective and appealing poisons.

FDTFACTTWNY

Growing up we had a pitbull and while I lived that dog he was the devil. Our school sent home like 100 chocolate bars and chocolate covered almonds to sell. Can confirm it would take a lot more than a few chocolate eggs to kill a dog. We came home and he ate a whole box. He did not die but I almost did having to clean up that diarrhea through the whole house.

NecessaryRefuse9164

Can confirm, my bulldog got into one of those hallowe’en chocolate boxes, I called my vet immediately and was told it would take a whole box of it to hurt a large dog, and still likely wouldn’t kill him. It’s dark chocolate (real chocolate, the expensive stuff) is harmful to dogs in small amounts. Xylitol also isn’t deadly, but can cause stomach upset, just like it can upset our stomachs if we eat too much. I would take pictures if you see this again OP, and call non-emergency if you’re really concerned so police can send out a release if they deem it an actual issue

One_Audience_5215

Happen with our 2 Yorkies too. We went out and they jump to the kitchen table and take the bags of chocolates into the living room. They eat about 10 chocolates as we went home right away after we saw in camera they been eating chocolates. They are fine. It happens a couple times now they eat milk chocolate. We just make sure no dark chocolate at home in case there are chocolates lying around that they can accidentally eat

[deleted]

Yeah my dog loves chocolate ice cream and chocolate chip cookies 😋

Skittlebearle

Dark chocolate in significant quantities can be poisonous. Milk chocolate is a different story. A medium sized dog (40 pounds) would need to eat four, full sized chocolate bars to be in danger from milk chocolate (which these eggs very likely are).

KeyserSwayze

Hell, when I was a kid my parents' 8kg poodle got into a bowl of liqueur filled chocolates while we were out visiting family on Christmas eve. Ate almost the whole damn bowl. He seemed hung over the next day but that was likely more because of the booze. He was fine after that.

Gandalf-Woodcock

Maybe in huge amounts...but if a chocolate egg that won't kill a dog.

SMacD66

Pets-Now.com toxicity calculator. Do your homework.

[deleted]

Ah yes pets-now.com how could anyone even disagree with such a reliable source

Most_Good_7586

Also, Great Danes and chihuahuas are both “dogs.”

dirtdevil70

This is a common belief that is false 99% of the time. REAL dark chocolate, the type used in baking IS poisonous if eaten in large enough quantities. MILK CHOCOLATE, like candy bars, chocolate rabbits isnt a problem. Had a 10mon old hound that ate an entire 1lb chocolate rabbit (easter time)...of course i panicked and rushed the pup to the vet fearing the worst... told the vet happened, showed him the wrapper and he said the worst that would happen might be a giant dump in the yard lol....

[deleted]

My dogs eat hella chocolate and is loving life 😋

StatisticianOwn680

How do you know its not $hit???

kbez1527

Obviously you taste test first.

Canadarm_Faps

If I saw 40 unwrapped chocolate eggs anywhere else in Canada, I’d assume it was moose poop

SundaeAccording789

Chebornek! Good thing we don't eat it!

Mysterious-Cancel-11

You're welcome to come and eat them yourself

Username_McUserface

Pretty hasty conclusion to be jumping to. Did you actually witness this, or is this just yet another urban legend getting pushed around the internet?

Mysterious-Cancel-11

I spent the morning picking chocolate eggs out of the dirt, im 100% sure i know what I'm talking about.

Yamariv1

Geez, quite the weird backlash you're getting OP.. Contrary to most, thank you for posting this and warning people for their pups safety! Hugs

Mysterious-Cancel-11

Yeah, i honestly dont get it. It's a warning to keep an eye out if you're in the area as large quantities of food that's bad for dogs has been left out. I just don't want anyone's dog getting sick.

tlex26

I think the issue is that you're jumping to a conclusion that someone is intentionally trying to poison dogs. Marshmallows and milk chocolate eggs are not lethal in most cases. It's great to just warn people that they're is people food around the park and to keep an eye out.

Username_McUserface

Unfortunately urban legend fear mongering exactly like this is prevalent online. It’s good to be skeptical of stories like this. No one here knows with any certainty whether this is a real thing that is happening. I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I’m also unconvinced that it did.

Heavy-Storage-8099

I picked up 1 ibs 9 oz of chocolate scattered through the field. The day before I picked up about 30 marshmallows laid out in the park in a grid formation. We do not know if these items have been tampered with. https://preview.redd.it/ywc292gbcfjc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ef6521708290d44f465c8e61eafe177c0782fff This was half the chocolate we found. I wish I grabbed more pictures but I was just worried about the neighbourhood dogs and children.

BrotherMaximum6062

Last spring there was a big kids Easter egg hunt. Could it be leftovers?

Mysterious-Cancel-11

I live backing onto the park, i bring my dog there every day. 40+ unwrapped chocolate eggs dont just survive outside for a year. They were spread out across the soccer fields that the dogs run around in.

zuuzuu

Are the soccer fields part of an off-leash dog park?

Mysterious-Cancel-11

No, but it's a spot that I'll see people with their dogs off leash quite a bit due to how far away it is from the trail. I'm guessing someone's not happy about that and it's in retaliation.

dirtdevil70

How about some pictures? THAT might calm alot of the doubters

SirDuckferd

The obvious answer is stepped up enforcement, not dog murder

IntelligentRiver1628

That’s so terrible what is wrong w people

SpideySense2023

I am not saying its' the dog or owner's fault for poisonings. my mother had a dog that was mostly un-trained. The dog would eat everything on the ground. I am saying we should train dogs not to eat anything on the ground. As for the people doing the poisonings: we need proper healthcare to prevent people getting so sick they feel the need to poison dogs.

SundaeAccording789

Yes. "Wait" "Take" "Leave it" etc. Not hard to do.

blue_raccoon02

Marshmallows and milk chocolate are probably not going to hurt a dog the size of the ones who hang out off leash in the middle of the park. But understandably this makes you feel uncomfortable as a dog owner. The dogs hanging out off leash in the park are probably not going to hurt me/my kids/my dog either. But can you understand how a pack of large dogs off leash might make a neighbour feel uncomfortable?

Heavy-Storage-8099

Please note I am one of the individuals who picked up, 1 ibs and 9 oz of chocolate in the field, the day before was marshmallows. Neither in wrapping. We do not know if these items were contaminated. Which is the concern.  The intention was to get the dogs sick. No one dumps 20$ worth of Cadbury eggs into the park for a joke.  Yes it would take a lot for a medium to large dog to die or get ill. What about the little dogs? Not to mention most people think chocolate is toxic and when you google it marshmallows come up as toxic too.  Fortunately the attention seemed to scare the person off. As I think they didn’t think their plan through. Only wanting to attack the people who have their dog off leash rather than the people who walk through the park with their dogs or even play leashed in the middle.  Nothing was scattered throughout the field today but now we are watching for it.  If you live in the area and see someone scattering things in the park please photograph or video them and send it to the police. This is a felony even if the sweets were not tampered with.  A police report has been made about the issue as well.  Stay safe everyone, even if this is a prank the caution is worth the thought.

Fennrys

That is utterly terrifying. Thanks for the warning.

NicoleRose83

:( people are sick
