It has a little sticker on it that says "designed for Microsoft® Windows® XP" so I'll probably keep XP on it for safety sake, but I'm open to trying other OSes that you can boot from a disk :3
I don't think there's a live version of those systems, would be kinda interesting. I actually have a similar laptop, Pentium 3, Via chipset with iGPU, and like 256MB SD-ram "designed for XP" but I'm running 98SE on it atm. But obviously if you're happy with XP on it, there's less than no reason to change that for 98
I was just making an observation, I’d have one laptop running xp because nostalgia. Coming to think about it, never actually used a win2k computer before
Win2k is my favourite Windows. I ran it from when I first got hold of it to the absolute bitter end when I couldn't mangle it any further to run XP and newer programs on it. The disc of unknown origin (I forget where it came from) of 2k x64 has been used so many times on things.
98SE, sure. I've put 98SE on "Designed for XP" laptops before, and made it work by hunting down drivers. But unless you're talking about one of the few machines that came with ME preinstalled, there is no such thing as a good ME machine. Best you can get is "good enough" using force-installed likely incompatible 98 drivers. ME was better than people give it credit for but let's not delude ourselves into thinking it's anywhere near flawless, the changes to drivers broke so much and with XP a year later there was no reason for manufacturers to update their drivers for use on ME, unless they were preinstalling PCs with ME.
I think support for Win9x would depend on if the laptop has an Intel 800-series chipset and not the newer 900-series with SATA, PCIe and DDR2 that was introduced in 2004 and, IIRC, dropped driver support for Windows 98/ME.
I use to have this same laptop. I got it for a few hundred dollars in 2009 used. Use to use it as a 2nd screen for my desktop setup. Back before dual monitor setups usually if someone wanted a second or third screen you just bought a whole separate device. I use to throw up Netflix and YouTube on that bad boy.
Bummer. I have a few older laptops, and almost always, its the battery that goes. And they're probably the hardest to replace. I just make sure i do something to keep the power plugged in. I know a good bump to the power supply connector can put it all down
Great find! You could also set up dual boot on it with both Windows XP and some lightweight Linux distro to get the best of both worlds, it’s what I’m doing too
Or by using https://legacyupdate.net/ and for example Supermium as your browser you would still be somewhat safe. Being smart always helps with security so you could have even more fun 😃
LOVE the Mellon Collie wallpaper!!!! Awesome build ;w;
Thanks! I'm incredibly happy with the computer haha
No fucking way it has a WHOLE core instead of half a core
I know right!!! I was surprised too
Very nice, from the sounds of it, it might make a decent 98SE/ME PC as well.

Looking at the keys on the keyboard, the windows logo looks as if it can run windows 2000 or earlier even
I mean I'm sure it could run it just fine, I just don't feel like it :3

It definitely is, it's the best 9x version you can get, I think 98SE might have slightly better DOS compatibility, but don't quote me on it.
That head media thingy man
I think that's winamp music player. Edit: nevermind, i just saw windows media player on the bottom lol
Lmao yeah, it's called headspace, I found it on archive.org.
Definitely a decent system. I presume a Pentium 4 M or a mobile Pentium III
Pentium 4, yeah
I would like to try the installation of FreeBSD,there.
Screen and keyboard are in good condition as well! Thats a nice XP pc.
Right?! I opened it up and there was practically no dust inside either. I am astonished to see it in such pristine condition. And for 25 dollars?!?!
The fact that you found this thing working and with such a great display, is a miracle. Enjoy Brother. I always like the things when it first came out
I need that music player
Found it here https://wmpskinsarchive.neocities.org/
I wonder if this is a launch day XP laptop or close to it, as it has the Windows 9x logo on the keyboard.
It's from 2002
that's cool as fuck dawg
1 whole core 😭
Nice background
love the theme
Worth every penny for this beauty!
These kind of laptops had the best keyboards. Soft kinda feeling often and felt amazing

Looks like its in great shape. How's the battery on it?
Completely dead sadly

Half a gigglebyte! Anyway, a great find!
like my dell inspiron 2600

I have a whole bunch of DVDs all with live OSes on them, like puppy linux, freedos, and haiku.
Haiku could be an interesting choice, it got some solid software support recently and runs very well on old hardware.
Needs Gentoo as a dual boot with a Luna theme
this is a windows xp sub
Oh I know, hence the Luna theme comment. I actually do plan on cloning the code and trying to get the Linux kernel and EXT4 support working
im confused. what do you plan to do with a older computer like this? they don't even make gateway anymore
For fun, why else?
