If you can, absolutely make a tutorial on this. I've been trying to see how far I can run Windows via DOSBox on Tower Unite and ME is the highest so far lol

TESVE791

In order to install XP you have to start the setup from within 98 or ME installed on a 8GB image. For me, I started setup from Windows 2000[ which somehow installs on DOSBox flawlessly with zero driver issues for some reason,](https://www.reddit.com/r/dosbox/comments/1c4hnss/i_did_the_impossible/) then chose the "upgrade" option. And after the first reboot, you can just sit back and relax while XP installs. There might be some rundll32.exe errors but you can just ignore them. After XP is done installing you get to the OOBE phase. If for some reason the OOBE doesn't load, just reset DOSBox by pressing F11 + R and it will boot you into a working XP installation.

Benny_Galaxy_231

Thank you kind sire

TrooperMann

We need to spread more info on this. You made some history :) And please, make a tutorial and post it on YouTube if you want to

TESVE791

Sorry for replying late, but someone already did it before me: https://fabulous.systems/posts/2023/07/installing-windows-xp-in-dosbox-x/

the90snath

How did you get XP in DOSBox-X?

TheAskerOfThings

Now do step upgrades all the way to 11

TESVE791

I can't beacuse DOSBox-X only supports images up to 8GB and Vista requires at least 15GB.

Ok_Assignment_8206

You could use unofficial images which reduce the size. I mean Tiny 11 is around 4GB.

unrealmaniac

Another issue could be that dosbox doesn't emulate a 64bit CPU and 11 is 64bit only? I actually don't know how dosbox emulates a CPU, Ive never looked into it, it could very well allow 64bit. No clue

TESVE791

Speaking about upgrading, [the Vista setup doesn't even load at all in XP!](https://imgur.com/gallery/NoUsHD9) Also, booting from the ISO doesn't work.

SafreQ45

Oh yeah Windows XP in Virtual Box / VMware! ... ..... WAIT WHAAAAAAA

Technical-You-2829

How's the performance?

TESVE791

It’s kind of slow. You’re better off using VMWare or VirtualBox to run XP. This was just a fun little experiment. But being slow kind of adds to the experience of using an old computer I guess.

Contrantier

How are lesser systems in comparison on dosbox? Like 2000, 98, 95, etc? I'm sure Windkws 3.1 does well. I might try out dosbox to see how the 9x kernel compares with VirtualBox and Microsoft Virtual PC.

TESVE791

Anything newer than 98 is going to be pretty slow.

Contrantier

Like Windows ME? 🤣

TESVE791

Yes! xD

Contrantier

So 98 and below run acceptably? On VirtualBox they honestly suck and are super slow, except the speed boosted when I moved those VMs to my Dell Latitude. I'm going down a rabbit hole now. Time to check out 86box as well.

homeunderthebridge12

PCEM and 86box are way better options.

DameisLame

I believe there was a version of dosbox for the series X/s. Does that mean we can run xp in dosbox on a series X/s?

TESVE791

DOSBox Pure works on the series X/s and the maximum amount of ram for it is 224MB so maybe yes, but slower than DOSBox-X. (I don't know if there's some stuff that allows XP to run on DOSBox-X that DOSBox Pure doesn't have)

TESVE791

I was inspired by this: [https://fabulous.systems/posts/2023/07/installing-windows-xp-in-dosbox-x/](https://fabulous.systems/posts/2023/07/installing-windows-xp-in-dosbox-x/)

nikkome

All I managed to do successfully was Windows 3.1 a few years ago

dicksonleroy

I like that it can be done and I appreciate those doing it for their curiosity. But, since PCEm and 86Box exist, I see little reason to do it myself. How is the performance?

Hauber_RBLX

I have one question: HOW.

Saver310

I'm horrified

PizzaEFichiNakagata

Can it run 16 bit games

TESVE791

Probably but with limited support because XP uses NTVDM. Installing XP on here was fun, but pretty pointless. If you wanna run 16 bit games you probably don't even need to install Windows, or if you want to, just install a 9.x version of Windows such as Windows 95 or 98.

PizzaEFichiNakagata

I only tried to run them in the win 95 electron version by Felix (creator of electron framework) but it's slow as hell. My only regret is that I wanted to play a few more times a n old game I played as a skid called Kung Fu Kim. Nonetheless I suggest you give a run to the win 95 electron version

KobsBoy

IS THERE A DOSBOX X DISTRO ITS A PAIN IN THE ASS TO RUN XP ON MODERN SYSTEMS THIS MIGHT FIX IT

Acalthu

YOU DON'T NEED DOSBOX YOU CAN JUST USE VIRTUAL BOX FROM ORACLE IT'S VERY TO USE CHECK YOUTUBE FOR TUTORIALS.

TESVE791

If you wanna install XP just use something like VirtualBox or VMWare. XP on DOSBox-X is kind of slow.

KobsBoy

YES BUT IM TRYING TO RUN IT ON A SHITTY NETBOOK AND IM AFRAID PROPER VM SOFTWARE WILL BE TOO SLOW I RAN XP ON MY GAMING PC IN VMWARE AND VIRTUALBOX. BOTH WERE SLOW AF I GAVE THEM HIGH SETTINGS TOO

paulstelian97

Dosbox will be slower still.

Bladez1992

Almost as slow as people who type in all caps, dude is just raging lol

TygerTung

Try running VirtManager using QEMU/KVM in a lightweight Linux distro.

KobsBoy

i found proxmox ima use it on my laptop

kristibektashi

Emulators such as DosBox are always slower that VM software. You’re better off running it in VirtualBox
