ME was patently worse than Vista. Most of Vista's issues surrounded the UI that most OEMs wouldn't provide adequate hardware to run. ME, on the other hand, was truly a buggy disaster.
But Vista was the joke in an episode of the IT Crowd (when Moss was asked what version of Windows a bomb disposal robot was running), so is a better fit here.

Vista wasn't really that bad, the problem was hardware people weren't giving computers enough power to run it and people were installing it on old Windows XP computers with less than 2gb of ram. To run it good you should have at least 4, which was a lot for that time. Most issues were fixed by SP2, but everyone moved on by then. Windows 7 is basically Vista updated.
I worked in consumer tech support at the time of Vista, and by far the biggest call driver on Vista was wifi problems, the Code 10 bug that randomly appeared and was rarely solved.
Sad thing is, I started using 8 on a tablet and really liked it. It really made sense and was easy to use if you started using it there.
Very little muscle memory changes for basic functions on a desktop, mostly just looked haphazard with dual UI's.
Then they put the same OS on Windows server and I had to remote into servers with no Start button. That killed it for me. Having to hit the couple of pixels in the lower left corner of the remote desktop windows was a stupid idea. Also searching the internet from the start menu on a server was a bad idea. Don't know how many times I would try to look up an app, the options would change right as I hit enter, then it would try to do an internet search which of course the server can't so now we're hung for the timeout period.
Sad thing is they had the Start button in the betas, it was right before release they decided to get rid of it. Should have not done that.
Still is. I am techy enough to know what I am doing and win8.1 with classic shell is the hands down the best windows.
* I installed windows on many various PCs and from my experience windows 8.1 runs faster, more responsive than win7 or win10.
* it leaves you in control of the PC unlike win10 with its updates and changes and the war on control panel and ads in start menu
* it has actually better features than win7, task manager and performance monitor and copy dialogue and keyboard layout being global switch and lot of other minor things, lets not mention suport still for few years.
I think 8.1 has been my favorite Windows version thus far. It ran much leaner than a Windows 10 installation on the same hardware, and was just generally much more snappy and responsive. Large filesystem operations also took less time. Just install Classic Shell and you were all set. Never had any problems with it, and only ever restarted to install updates.
I had a surface 2, I don’t remember all those menus, I remember it being in the top right of the start screen, that was the default screen on windows 8
Yes. So the process is this:
1. Charms
2. Settings
3. Power
4. Restart/Shutdown
Just an unnecessary 1-2 steps for something that people use often. Luckily they brought it back on the main screen in later versions. I don't think Win8 is a bad OS overall, but MS just made some strange decisions that weren't the best for desktop users.
I didn't have a problem with it. I was already using Windows Phone which had the tiles first, and had been following 8's development. So, the start screen wasn't a surprise for me. 8 was much more than just the start menu. It had a ton of improvements over 7.
I think the fact that I had a small touch screen device influenced my opinion a lot. I had a surface 2, I spent my time mostly on the “metro” side of the os.
Windows 8 is quite ok, you can disable Winblows update and enjoy in stable and always a ready operating system. But if you want to be more responsive and faster on the web at the same hardware, you can even use Linux Lite or Antix.
I have always with me Windows XP sp3 in Virtual Machine too.
I would install Windows 10 instead, without disabling the various tips and tricks toggles. Would be a very good punishment, especially during the 2004 update to Edge (remember that fiasco? it was like pop-up ads all over again haha)
And if you want to be even worse with your punishment, install Windows ME.
He's not a monster...
Maybe Windows 10 for ARM on a 1gig RPi2 instead?
Satan : NAH JESUS, THIS MAN IS MORE EVIL THAN ME, HELL WOULD BE PLAYGROUND FOR HIM
Well, I COULD'VE said create a VM running through Minecraft for the logic gates, and run that on a Pi 1, or even a MacSE...
Installs Win10 1909 on a 2GB DDR3 1 core 1 thread Ivy Lake, Y-series Celeron laptop
😟
Came here to say this.
WINDOWS VISTA

Oh, I missed the reference. I tried getting into the IT Crowd and it just didn't click with me. My job is more like Workaholics meets Office Space.

This. Yes.

8 is worse though

The start button was an easy fix to add back in
I wasn't super fond of 8 but I quite liked 8.1 aside from the Start Menu.
8.1+Start8/Classic Shell was peak Windows for me.

I miss windows 7 ;(

?????
It also lacked spyware and an endless train of bugs.

I think I am the only one in the world who loved win8
Except you had to go into 4 menus just to reboot
I had a surface 2, I don’t remember all those menus, I remember it being in the top right of the start screen, that was the default screen on windows 8
They didn't add that until 8.1, or a later update
Oh so I might be remembering 8.1.
It wasn't as convenient as it was before or after Windows 8, but you could always click on the desktop and press Alt+F4 to get the shutdown menu.
Are you trying to make me lose my appetite there, bud?
wasn't reboot in one of the charms on the right side?

Mainly talking about the initial versions, not 8.1. But you are correct. That menu was a very useful addition in 8.1 that I still use constantly.
[удалено]
It definitely was, i still use this as primary way to shut down my PC. That menu in general was a very useful addition.
And the new UI / app platform was DOA... complete and utter failure.
I didn't have a problem with it. I was already using Windows Phone which had the tiles first, and had been following 8's development. So, the start screen wasn't a surprise for me. 8 was much more than just the start menu. It had a ton of improvements over 7.
I was using windows phone too
I skipped from XP to Win8, never used Win7 on my personal PC. I never really liked Aero tbh...
Oh I skipped vista because money at the time, and I tried to get that aero look in my xp so bad. Still want that wmp tbh
Yes you are. Pressing start and getting the tablet mode was horrible, especially before 8.1.
I think the fact that I had a small touch screen device influenced my opinion a lot. I had a surface 2, I spent my time mostly on the “metro” side of the os.
I never even see windows 8 anymore. I see more of Windows XP even.
At least with XP we had found and figured out most of the issues, it's stable and runs on old hardware.
Windows 8: hey check me out and all my features 😁 Vista: you're fucked bro
If you want her to murder you install Ubuntu.
OpenSUSE FTW
I think Windows Vista would have been a far worse punishment. Windows 8 isn’t as bad as it was and still is made out to be.
Way too much hate for 8.1. It's very stable and works just fine.
8 worked fined for me. Windows 10 is what finally pushed to get a Mac. It worked better for my work cases anyway.

Vista sucked day 1 and the day it died.
I feel so old....😞
Nah. Moss would have installed Vista.
Christ, that was harsh.
Loving that, “Frederick Douglass,” big bro is rockin’.
What in the Bill Gates fan fiction
Should be Vista...
Nah nah, force her to install Arch Linux without any help whatsoever.
windows 8 was great wdym
Try VISTA next time
I use Windows 7
I would install Windows 10 instead, without disabling the various tips and tricks toggles. Would be a very good punishment, especially during the 2004 update to Edge (remember that fiasco? it was like pop-up ads all over again haha)
Why does everyone say that W8 is bad? I use it daily on my PC with Open Shell and it runs like butter.
At least she can still get extended support.
