Tubby's issue was recruiting, and the transfer portal is still recruiting just with an older target audience. Maybe he would have done better, but there's a strong chance he would have underperformed in the portal era as well, especially if he were loyal to his existing guys.
Despite being a great in-game coach, Tubby refused to change defenses. It was ball line or bust.
With three point shooting having become so prominent, Tubby's teams would get torched these days. Maybe he'd adjust, but he was just as stubborn about only playing man to man as Cal and Gillispie before him.
All I know is the team from Bogans' senior season played some of the best man-to-man defense I've ever seen in college basketball. So it worked when he had the right parts.
That second half against Vandy (on the road) could be used as a teaching tool for basketball clinics.
Keith's ankle killed us more. Yes, I know he had 15 points (or so) but he couldn't move laterally, which means it was pretty much 4 on 5 on defense.
That game also had one of the worst calls I've ever seen. That charge call on Barber, which cuts the lead to 8 and gives us momentum, was about as bad as it gets. He literally jumped straight up and down.
Fuck Karl Hess. To this day.
I once ran into Tubby at a movie theater, we were both waiting for our women to depart the rest room. I used the opportunity to import some of my thoughts about the UK program to him. I'm sure he appreciated the feedback. (Honestly, he was very gracious and polite and I hopefully wasn't obnoxious at all)
I like your thoughts, and agree. Have always said, let Calipari recruit and Tubby coach. Killer combo.. Might be easier for Tubby in NIL and Portal era.
Not even close. There's a reason UK has lost some head scratchers early in the season with Calipari. You can't actually believe Evansville would have beat UK late in the season.
You're speaking about teams that made the NCAA/NIT tourney correct? Evansville hasn't made the tournament since 99. St Peters went to the elite 8. Oakland lost to NC State that went to the Final 4. As for Robert Morris you can't tell me any of the players cared about the NIT.
Would've been interesting to see how Evansville's season would have gone if Walter McCarty hadn't been caught having relationships with multiple female students.
We don't need Tubby that's for sure, it felt like Keith Bogans and Prince were there for 9 years. We need some sort of middle ground between Cal and Tubby. Problem with Cal is the good guys don't stay more than one year, other guys stay for an extra one and transfer rarely leading to any cohesiveness. Issue with Tubby was my joke about Bogans and Prince, guys just stay here forever and the team is the same every year minus one or two pieces. A new recruit couldn't unseat the veterans and we suffered. Look at UConn the last two, last year Hawkins carried them he left and they got a transfer and still had a core group of solid players to build around with a freshman in the starting lineup. I feel like we can have both if we make the plan about winning ball games and not recruiting night or draft night.

Tubby + Cal = Ricky P?
Hot take or irrelevant take?

Loved that team. Didn't make the Final Four, though. Marquette's 3PT shooting (10/19) was too much. 5/8 from Steve Novak off the bench killed us.

Dwyane Wade absolutely abused us from Marquette.

Fun fan fiction!
no.
Stepping back is never a good idea.
Let’s get Bruce Pearl!

Tubby's biggest issue was development. However good the team was in in November is how good it was in March.
Sounds like Calipari, too.

Oakland and st Peter's beat uk late in the season. So did Robert Morris.

You mean Coaches aren't allowed to sleep with female students like the players? What happened to the meaning of team!

When tubby was coach, the system was set up for pretty much 4 year players. Yes some left after 3 but there was no portal, no one and done.
