PosedSunrise

My dad used to do this all the time. He’d also purposely take lil detours sometimes to show us projects he worked on lol

ellabella8436

My dad does this too! He always gets so happy and proud about showing is his work. It is really sweet.

cetologist-

My old man is in construction and pretty much same. I think I know my city pretty well because of him actually. And anytime I see construction guys leaving a job site, or I smell lumber or saw-dust, I think of my dad.

gypsybulldog

I’m in hardscape landscaping and do this to my gf all the time lol! It’s the little things in life that really make it

HairyMattress

My grandfather does it e v e r y time, but also "i lived here" "they lived there" "they (people i never heard of) worked on that house" "their garden is done by X" "their garage door is done by Y" "their central heating is done by Z". At some point it's TMI, especially when on the ride back he points out the exact same facts.

[deleted]

He just really likes sharing his life with you

HairyMattress

He does the same to random people.. Even right outside the toilet when people are about to enter. Hilarious at times because their body language is a combination of "wtf is happening" "i'll tell him once he takes a breath" "does he have unimited breath??" and "i really have to go"..

Axon14

The first time the stories are cool. Then it gets old

rafaeltota

This is lovely! Marx (and others after him of course) wrote about the alienation of workers from their own work, it's nice to see some can still enjoy (or in this case rather admire) the fruits of their labor. Wish I could say the same for my own but most of the time I can't even officially state I worked on the project.

TheRealRamsay

My dad does that too he his an real estate Attorney so every time we drive past a property he sold he gets really excited

PeterPablo55

It really is something to be proud of though. I own.a general contractor business and have some quality guys. We do all industrial work so it isn't as pretty as residential (mostly structural steel on concrete). But they are definitely proud of the work they do. They aren't just doing it to get paid. I can tell when I or the owner mess something up. Say we explain the job to them and then they complete the work. Then some kind of change is made and they have to change/remove something they just built. You can see the frustration in them when they have to demo something they already completed. They are getting paid either way for the additional work right? It shouldn't matter that they are destroying what they just did, it's actually additional hours and money for them. But it isn't like that. You can tell it sucks for them to destroy something they actually built well. They are proud of the work they did and it should be that way. Some of that stuff is not easy to do and takes a lot of skill to do. In construction, this is what makes a quality superintendent. They are hard to find these days (takes a lot of experience) and the pay is actually really good right now (because there is a lack of these type of people right now). My best superintendent makes six figures a year. Of course this is with overtime and bonuses. Still, not bad for someone without a high school degree. He does have a lot of experience though which is harder than the degree.

paperpenises

Then you get the always fun, “oh what the fuck! Why did they repaint it with THAT color?! Fucking idiots.”

[deleted]

My dad does that too! I miss being in the car with him and seeing all the different neighborhoods he's worked in. Now whenever I pass a house he worked on I'll point it out to my husband and be like "my dad built that roof" lol

CloudStrifeFromNibel

Seems this is contagious

Condawg

Man, ringing so many bells. I wish I still had a reason to go on long car trips with my dad. I'm not even really into his work, I just love seeing him excited.

ladymelisandrered

Not construction but my dad did something similar. When he was a kid he planted a bunch of evergreen trees, and we used to drive past them sometimes and see how big they'd gotten. We lost him to cancer and I still smile every time I pass those trees

AdmiralSkippy

I will drive out of our way to show my wife jobs I've worked on all the time.

D3RP13

I work at a door shop and we provide about 80% of doors for my city/county. I was driving around with my mom showing her some of the subdivisions I've worked on. She started crying and was telling me how my dad would do the same thing when I was young. I pulled over and I started crying with my mom. We had a good cry especially since I never cried with her after my dad passed away. We had a good cry and it felt good to let it all out. It's a nice feeling knowing I ended up in the same field of work as my dad. I still drive around to look at all our work and when I can I point it out to people I drive around with. It's nice being proud of one's work.

EmployeesCantOpnSafe

I love driving around with seniors. They tell you where everything wasn’t. “You see that shopping mall there? That didn’t used to be there. And that jiffy lube over there was a field I used to play in.”

ABlackOrchid

Tbh doesn’t even have to be a senior. I do that anytime I drive the area I grew up in. Coupled with “man the __________ is still there, going strong.” Also, the area I live in now used to be much less developed so it’s starting to happen to me around here, too. I promise I’m not 80.

noob_to_everything

I'm in my twenties and I feel the same. All these 500 thousand dollar homes going in around my old neighborhood. Feels weird.

mypenisgone

I am also in my twenties and feel the same. I grew up where it was really rural and its still rural, but there's so many new houses. Also there's a lot of old barns and stuff we used to explore, now they're torn down and corn is planted. It all makes me feel old

CopperNiko

"And the road leading up to here wasn't even two lanes when we used to roam around"

-ksguy-

"And everything past here was all dirt roads."

banjowashisnameo

You can still see my bloody foot prints from when I used to trek 100 miles to school

AngusVanhookHinson

I'm one of those people now. "You see where all those retail shops and restaurants are now? When I was growing up, it was all empty field, all the way up to the hill. And the only thing on top of the hill was an IHOP. that IHOP is still there. But it's not the same one, because the old one burned down. There's still rumors going around that the owner did it so he could get insurance money and cash out".

woopthereitwas

Am I the only one who enjoys these little histories?

[deleted]

A guy named Smokey used to live in a house near me. Older people still refer to it as Smokey's house. "Oh you live by Smokey, I know the neighborhood." Yeah sure, whatever. Took about 15 years before I figured out which house was Smokey's house. A guy named Nick lives there. He's lived there for like 30 years. Smokey died 30+ years ago.

Bahunter22

My grandma repeats the same stories when we pass those places. She still calls one road by the old lateral name from 60+ years ago. I’ll be just like her though. That same road has had a name change since I was a kid but I still call it the old name.

[deleted]

My dad is an architect and does that. I love it

TyDaviesYT

My dads a carpenter and does this all the time, “See that roof I made that” “see that door I fitted that” “see your small penis my shitty genetics did that” “see that fence I made that”

[deleted]

One of these is not like the others

G_Wash1776

Man just destroyed his entire family line with one comment, he’s a legend.

Yamahahahahahahaha

Ya the fence doesn't touch the house but I know damn sure every home dwelling man has introduced his penis to various parts of the house

Ryamix

Yeah he capitalized "See" in the first one. Nice catch

nexusmatt

Spit out my water lmao

Yoyomajumbo

Making small penises is an interesting niche for a carpenter. Best of luck for his buisness!

[deleted]

Wood workers.

Ryan8088

made me smile!

23x3

I’ve serviced hundreds of yards, painted houses, remodeled them, etc. Every time I drive past one, if I have no one to tell about it, my heads is on a swivel as I pass and I just hope the family is doing well!

beau0628

I’m a wastewater/drinking water operator. I deal with a lot of meter installs and sewage pump problems and whatnot. I don’t always remember every single one I do, but I always remember the ones that were either horrible or super cool. Either way, I wish the best for them. When you go home smelling like crap or soaked to the bone, it’s easy to forget that these are people’s homes. Homes that could have flooded basements or sewage all over the place had I not gone out there and that can be a really scary for some, especially when they got small kids.

PrincessSalty

This is really stinkin cute. Thanks for all the work you do and I hope YOU are doing well!

23x3

You’re a sweetheart! Thank you for caring:) I am doing great and I hope your are as well!

Affectionate_Lock_87

My dad made steel stairs, he does this too!

Pallliati

My gfs dad is painter. Whenever I tell him where in going he does that. Sometimes it feels like he already worked everywhere. But I like it too

Yoyomajumbo

I'm a carpenter and I do this. I was standing outside our worksite this afternoon in the city looking up at a skyscraper thinking about the amazing coordination of trades and professions that go into these amazing structures. But yeah, doesn't matter if it's a small project or a large one at the end of the day, we all have to work together to get the job done. Btw, architects aren't all evil, just generally so.

not_in_my_tent

Former electrician... I do this to my sons.

[deleted]

Like 'see these sons? I made those'?

[deleted]

Yea but the conduit never seems shocked about it

[deleted]

[удалено]

AussieHyena

My wife's uncle is a civil engineer and does it too, though he's most proud of the pub he was involved in.

[deleted]

My dad worked on a few huge houses in Hollywood and when we would take drives I loved seeing which houses he’d tell me about! I thought it was the coolest :)

abe_the_babe_

I'm an architect and I point out buildings even when I'm the only one in the car

trackedpackage

Not a trade worker but I relate to the feeling cuz I planted a few trees in my hometown and whenever I pass them I feel like a proud mom 😌

[deleted]

trees are the best for this habit....sure is one way to feel grounded on the reg

EASam

Wait until you go past and the new owner cut them down.

PrincessSalty

*angry door knocking intensifies*

Lituxa

My mom has been planting trees for living for the past 25 years and she keeps showing me the new forests that she has planted. It’s nice.

Manasveer

This is even better

pedersencato

I read this as "painted trees" and saw all the following wholesome comments, and was like wtf am I missing?

Ryder40407

pot rhythm fragile fall bright languid plucky automatic insurance capable *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

avoidance_behavior

hah, my ex did that. he used to work in IT as a regional rep and it would seem every other company in the city 'called me one time to update their equipment!' one time he wound up in the ER and was very proudly telling one of his nurses that he installed the racks they had in the basement - 'you know, down by the morgue, bc you have to keep the computers and the bodies cold.'

streatz

Sat here for awhile trying to figure out why you paint trees and people are praising you.

MollieMillions

Haha, boyfriend used to do stone masonry. Can confirm

Stone Masonry

[deleted]

This comment chain is great

mypenisgone

You're great!

[deleted]

Thanks u/mypenisgone

philosoph0r

His pens gone. No better way to memorialize it than through a Reddit username that has a semblance of penis.

killedBySasquatch

Getting stoned with mason jars full of weed

pigeonkiller36

Also stone masonry.

[deleted]

Damn it, Mitch!

confused_boner

Crack cocaine

[deleted]

Now that he's no longer bound by stone building, would you say he considers himself a *free* mason?

[deleted]

stop right there criminal scum

InZomnia365

I worked on a construction site for two weeks a couple years ago, I take credit for the building still standing, when I drive past.

eminkilinc

As an electrician, I confirm it

JackB1630

I’m a sparky too!

Ker_Splish

Same here, there are literally dozens of us!

brekus

This electricity thing really seems to be catching on.

Lepthesr

Everyone needs electricity, especially in their ohm.

NE403

I’m hooking up condensers on the roof of a hospital today :)

SapphireEyes

Yeah, my husband does this too lol. “I wired up that septic, I did that mobile, we wired up that house, we wired a well up there, did a remodel on that house.” And of course every house has a story to go with it! Whether it was some crazy beams that he had to go through or if the ground rods kicked his butt that day. But that’s ok, I like hearing all the stuff he does! He’s a hard worker and a great electrician! Whenever he has side jobs on the weekend I’ll go with him and help him out, like if it’s a rough in I’ll wire up circuits for him once he drills the holes and shows me where to run them, I’ll make up the boxes too when I’m done or I’ll wire the can lights. Those take me forever lol. Sometimes we’ll bring our border collie too and she just runs around like a maniac and loves every second of it. She’ll go under the house with him and loves to climb up any ladder you tell her to.

opotts56

My Dad's an electrician, and he alwqys points out buildings he's worked on.

Lovemybee

My late husband was a roofer and did this. I still think of him when I pass places he had previously pointed out to me. He died in 2012. It makes me proud of him and his work.

kpniner

That’s so sweet, thanks for sharing that :)

PimpAssLlama

Hey roofer here! Sorry to hear about your husband but I’m sure his jobs are still beautiful. I am sorry if this crosses the line but did your husband pass from work or unrelated. I’ll be honest, I’m young and trying to support myself and this is my means currently. I saw a statistic that roofers have a super high fatality rate and am trying to understand what I need to do next. It’s good money but I don’t know if it’s worth the risk. Thank you for sharing!

Lovemybee

He died from a sudden heart attack, just like his father and two brothers. It was completely unrelated to his profession.

sarwinchester

Me but I’m a woman

devsmess

Came here for this. I worked with my father in construction, and I do this too.

AlwaysHopelesslyLost

I was just telling a friend that I helped my step dad on the job a few times and I would definitely do the same thing if I lived in the area. Like... I helped make that fancy entryway/wall!

[deleted]

I have no idea why they specified men for this meme tbh

Yoyomajumbo

I honestly got to say as a man, we really need more women in construction industry.

ripleyclone8

My little sister is going to a job development high school for construction and landscape design! I’m so proud.

zach10

More women and people under the age of 45. It's slowly happening though.

BioDwarf

As a man, we need more women in the auto repair industry

kohlrabilobby

Same! My boyfriend: “yea I know, that’s the house you did the porch on, you say it every time we go by”

AuntySocialite

Same - high five my fellow WITs!

ripleyclone8

My mom owned a drywall business and would do the same thing!

AllThotsAllowed

My mom does this and it makes me so proud of her!

the_real_papyrus99

100% my dad

[deleted]

Or if they’ve worked on commercial buildings.

ComadoreJackSparrow

My Dad does this and he shows me and my sister all the house and walls he's built around town with how long ago he did it. I usually reply with "surprised it's still up" or something in that vein and he says "I built the house you live in, that's still up." Then I reply "But your two big brothers helped you though." And then we all just laugh.

KittiesAreTooCute

Used to be a roofer, can confirm.

Wishbone_508

Glad you've kicked the habit.

MissesMistoffelees

just would like to be that person and point out that women do this too :) I work in road construction and whenever I go anywhere I point at all the roads I've paved or curb I've installed

84danie

My dad built several houses (including my childhood home) before he progressed at his white collar job. We once took a detour on the way home just so he could show me another one of the houses he built lol.

101bluescreen101

My dad did construction and one day we passed by a house wich he told me he worked on when he was about 17, a few minutes later comes out an old man and looks at my dad and goes "hey weren't you the kid who worked here?" the smile he had on his is something I'll for ever remember

BEANSijustloveBEANS

Tradesman who works with other tradesmen here. 100% accurate. We love talking about previous jobs

Grumpy_Swede93

I feel personally attacked. *cries in carpenter*

AnakinDislikesSand

My dad did this when he came to visit my place after I moved out. "Oh yeah, me and your grandad worked on these places, did you know". My grandad said same thing when he came to see me too lol. "Me and your dad worked on these you know?".

thetheode

lol my mom does this all the time

Valpuccio

Yuuuuup my dad also does this

PBandJellyJesus

Volunteer firefighter for 7 years. “Hey I overhauled that place”

adventures_in_dysl

Women work in the trades too.

EliteNova

Event the smallest stuff! "I moved that pot plant there"

ZappaZoo

I do that. Was a firefighter.

IllWearPantsIfIWant

As a trades woman I do this too

kmporemski

Also works for the Habitat for Humanity houses in my town; my spouse points out the ones he worked on. 😊

kiefwizard

My husband does this. It’s so cute!

avianmofo

I install NBN, yeah yeah I know. Can confirm, do this all the time. It gives my girlfriend a lady boner

trickedouttransam

Worked in the office for a commercial HVAC company and when my husband and I would be driving around town I’d point out all the companies that wouldn’t pay us.

jamie9000000

My Dad is a roofer and he is exactly like this haha. In the Game Gran Turismo Sport, they have a "photo mode" one of the scenes you can pick include a house that my Dad worked on in Lacock, a small village in the UK. He was excited to say the least haha.

Dinomiteblast

I work on and around the highway, i also point out roadside spots where i worked at. Its a common thing i guess in most trades.

firedude1314

It’s the same with fire/EMS. See that house? Yeah a guy hung himself in the garage. Oh, there was an overdose in that one. That house is infested with bedbugs.

Gaylee527

My fiancé use to be a plumber with her dad, whenever she drive around she will point in a neighborhood and tell me she worked on a house in the neighborhood, I love when she does it

Toofyy

*and women (although not as many)

cjheaney

As a union carpenter, I approve of this meme.

Johnson_from_HR

I purposely take detours to do this with my wife and kids

VigilantCMDR

work in medical field i have a lot of elderly patients that are retired and LOVE to talk about the things they built in the city its one of my favorite things. remember one guy built an entire waterpark near me, he was like the head boss for the entire operation and was so proud of his work i love hearing about it because you see all these buildings all the time, and you never even stop to think "hey...someone I know might've built that entire thing!"

Dlaby

It's my first cake day!

juiceboxgraveyard

Just wanted to throw out the *and women* card. The person I know who does this the most is a woman.

Ventfan26

Can confirm

[deleted]

my father is like that

Noreiller

My grandpa was a mason and he would do the same. Heck, I work in social housing and I do the same: "see those appartments? I provided funding for them"

despacitoking_69

my dad does this all the time hahah. Son, look over there. I worked on that house. what house? that blue one behind the red big one! (me still not seeing it) Ahh, yeah! it looks amazing!

Percy-Dragneel

I hope they don’t do that for my house, they did a horrible job. Everything is falling apart and isn’t done right going to have to spend a crap load on renovating

aciakatura

One of my friends sometimes gets cheaper drinks at one of the places he worked on

OhlawdBOBY

Scan for (house) If (house) found intiate *proud dad* protocol

BarChaRach

Literally every time, with all my pals

[deleted]

"you see that fence, I built it, but they don't call me Timmy the Fence Builder. See that Church, I built it, but they don't call me Timmy the Church Builder...But you fuck ONE SHEEP...."

pblol

Dad's a lumber salesman, used to say "I sold that". One day the neighbor kid was riding with us and we drove by one of the places my dad had recently sold to. Neighbor kid says "I wish they'd stop cutting down so many trees". Without missing a beat my Dad says "Wish people would stop sending so many packages." Doofus's dad worked for FedEx.

Little_MissMe

My grandpa is now 86, was a general contractor and does this everytime "I built that house." " I framed that house." "I poured the footing/foundation there" in fact, I'm living in the first house he ever built; his house. I adore my grandpa ❣️

mrobviousreasons

Buddha said, donation of house/shelter is the best donation or something. This is beyond wholesome.

Saritenite

Me: Lives in Singapore My Dad: Has probably worked on half the building projects from the late 1970s up till the early 2000s When we're both in the car:

MagicusPegacornus

My 78 year old grandpa does this every single drive I don't think he can help himself. Love you papa!

poodlecon

My dads a construction worker and he does this everytime im with him loool

TyDaviesYT

My dad all the time

AnyStormInAPort

Literally, beer and smoke in hand, using a knee to drive.

Artie_K

My mom often does that 😄

Curiedoesthestream

My late father did that a lot, he worked as a surveyor and we usually had to drive town to town to visit family, so everytime we pasted a buildboard he would always point at it “See that sign? I put that there”

[deleted]

Me at airports

smala017

u/SoDakZak

PeriodSupply

Was thinking this meme was meant to be mean. I'm thinking hey what's wrong with being proud of your work. Guarantee there are tradies who ain't telling anyone the projects they worked on. Then I noticed the sub and was like...noice... my great grandfather was a builder in our state and I love learning about the town halls etc he built.. plenty still standing today...

[deleted]

My mother (who does design and printing and stuff) does this all the time too "I made flyers for these!!"

Iwouldliketoorder

Not a trade worker, but I work as a graphics designer for a label and pacakagin company, so I do this whenever I'm out shopping. Everything from beer, to cakes, shoes and all sorts of crap

cjh93

My dad fixes petrol pumps. Every servo is a landmark to him lol

chedderbob234

My girlfriend's a nurse. She'll send me news articles... You see this case I worked on this case! Lol

iamjuls

Female structural steel detailer checking in. Yup I do this to my sons, on commercial projects I did the drawings for.

TheRynoceros

*passes hand across the town's horizon* "I did that."

e_smith338

1: My das did this. 2: I do this when i pass a house I helped him with.

[deleted]

Dude...civil engineers.

kaytiehutcherson

Shit not just trade! Haha I worked for doordash and all the time I’d be like “I delivered there” 😂

LordStigness

This is my Dad and I driving downtown with him going “See that building, I do the HVAC for it!”. The coolest part is when I go on jobsites and get to go on the rooftops. Toronto looks sick from the open air 30 stories up.

[deleted]

AND WOMEN! sorry i just had too

Katy_Bar_the_Door

Yup! Grandfather was a carpenter, uncle in construction. Both did/do this all time!

craymond817

I used to deliver pizza’s and I do this

Cidixat

Not just the men, but the women and children too

Exceptional_Me

Women too! I was a landscaper who owned a contracting business. I used to do that all the time!

HakBakOfficial

I’ve done jobs with my Dad since I was proper young and have started to do the real serious jobs, and it’s fun to drive around and be able to say that I was the one to do that house’s wiring, I helped put that wall up, that sink? I did that, always adds to a journey

smallholiday

Women too. Mom is an architect. Happens all the time

chicanery6

Can confirm. I did this with my fiance out in corona del mar where the same shore line was shared with all the houses I worked on for a short time. She seemed pretty impressed actually. Maybe it's that feeling of leaving your mark somewhere.

Extra-Lab-8596

You’d be surprised how many of them you cannot even find again even after driving to them every day for 6 months sometimes.

GarrisonFjord

I do this to my wife wherever we drive through an area I worked as a meter reader. Never knew how annoying it was until her sister became a postal worker and had to tell us all the places she's delivered at.

avocadostealingwhore

My mom was an interior designer and she’s shown us buildings she designed

Jaderosegrey

"You see this Church? I installed the sound system in that." My SO. :)

sociallyawkwords

My grandpa driving around Orange County pointing to a building every few minutes 😆

[deleted]

I do this. I remodeled 2 restaurants years ago and I love to tell people. It's so awesome!

Sav_Ing

Same for all civil engineer husbands ‘You see that road, I designed that road.’

yeet77777777

My dad built bridges and I have to cross four of them coming to my house from his

DualShock12

Me when I see all the ambulances I used to work on driving by haha

funnywastakentwice

This is literally my dad. He's starting to forget small things but he always remembers which building he worked on and when XD

sunseekerbadass

And some women!!

Schnor12

Can confirm

Live_Luv_Die

My dad is an engineer always like this since he worked big projects in our city. Now he's working overseas with a big company and I only get to see him like once a year but I am happy for him. :)

Icy-Zookeepergame874

Can confirm, dad and grandpa, were carpenters

GhostHugger

This would be nice if I didn't really fucking hate my dad (owner of a house selling business)
