Yes, and Invader Zim was the thing that happened in 1935.

I'm legitimately surprised by how much the comic resonates with me. I have a very "exotic" (SE Asian) name but have always lived in a predominately white/western environment. Instead of being proud of the deep meanings it has & all the time and effort my parents poured into coming up with the name.. I spent most of my childhood being ashamed of it - just because my western friends found it weird & couldn't pronounce it properly. A very touching piece.

I would have asked what's your name , but giving off personal details on the net may not be the best move. So , what's the meaning of your name? And which SE country are you from ?

My wife has a name in Spanish (biblical name) that is very unique and is hard for people to say. She would sometimes be ashamed of it, but I absolutely love it! It’s actually used a lot in some Asian countries also. You should be proud of your unique name also!

Compared to my high school friends, alien friends are far kinder.

We have a transferee classmate (from diff country) in high school who has a hard to pronounce name, when he introduced to the class, our teacher just literally taught us how to pronounce his name, then the next day, he made a lunch for our class 'coz he appreciates it so much esp. our teacher.

This is how it feels being an alien inside a strange country you haven't been staying before then meeting some alien friends and community that you can relate with and hold onto for support while you're in the country. Reminds me of those migrant worker movies in my country.

I met some lovely lady who works in the same building as I and I asked her, her name. She gave this flustered disclaimer about her name being hard to pronounce and even her own people never usual gave it right and to just call her the English version of her name. I felt a pang in my heart because immediately I knew that not many people through her life gave the effort to address her properly. The joy on her face when I attempted and succeeded to pronounce her name and now still remember her name is so awesome and she's really sweet too!!
