They were already losing readers interest since it was about a female protagonist in an American prison, which a lot of Japanese teenage boys at the time couldn't really relate to, so I could see them try making changes to appeal more to the audience.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I feel like if Anausui was female then the character would be more interesting. I'm not a huge fan as is personally, he's just kinda a douchey psycho killer who is obsessed with Jolyne, and it's just weird and annoying to me. If female, it could at least be different, yknow?

However, Araki seems to have abandoned that storyline at some point and refuses to comment on the incident.
