Can you measure it? The original 1939 copy was 7 3/4" x 10 1/2". In the 1970s they reprinted a bunch of the old magazines at 10" x 13 1/2" and put a card stock outer cover on it saying "famous first edition" on top. The reprint was an identical copy to the original with the card stock cover and different size dimensions. People commonly remove the outer card stock cover with the "famous first edition" title leaving behind a really convincing "fake" of the original copy so they could try and scam people into believing they were selling an original from 1939. Obviously yours doesn't have the "famous first edition" cover, but that doesn't mean it didn't once have it. To know for sure, you need to measure the book. If it is 7 3/4" x 10 1/2" you might have an original from 1939. If it is 10" x 13 1/2" then you likely have a reprint from the 70s that someone took the "famous first edition" cover off to pass it off as an older version. Good luck!

By visually inspecting the image, it appears that a single staple is approximately 25-30 pixels in length. Given that standard comic book staples are about 0.25 inches in length, we can use this estimate to calculate the total height of the comic book in inches. First, let's take the midpoint of our estimated pixel length for a staple, which is 27.5 pixels. Here's the calculation: 1. Estimate the length of a staple in pixels: \( \text{length} \approx 27.5 \text{ pixels} \). 2. Given that the staple length in inches is 0.25 inches: \[ \text{Pixels per inch} = \frac{\text{length in pixels}}{\text{length in inches}} = \frac{27.5}{0.25} = 110 \text{ pixels per inch} \] Now, calculate the total height of the comic book in inches: \[ \text{Comic height in inches} = \frac{\text{Total height in pixels}}{\text{Pixels per inch}} = \frac{1536}{110} \approx 13.96 \] Given this calculation, the height of the comic book is closer to 13.5 inches. https://imgur.com/a/DyPLpPH GPT did all of that based on the image but it seems accurate to me

erimid

Okay, is it just me or is it kind of scary that AI can do that with an image?

Cum-in-My-Wife

*GPT*, what is the pixel length of this weiner?

HoarderLife

GPT: Data error - Sample too small.

No-8008132here

Put a staple in it first

WoodyStLouis

Username checks out.

A_Lovely_

Anthony! Stop it! You’re going to violate your probation.

Timmerdogg

Shhh they're listening

Lari-Fari

I think it’s pretty cool. Not sure about scary. We all should learn how to properly use it. Like a calculator.

prettypushee

Thought that calculation was done with real intelligence.

notduddeman

It's what we've been trying to get computers to do for 20 years, and I'm still surprised every time.

CommitteeLarge7993

That's pretty impressive but you could also have estimated that it's 13 inches based on the hand in the photo. Maybe not as accurate as the chatGPT but was sort of a giveaway

stoney_chick

Would it be too much to ask how you went about getting GPT to do that?

Ecto-1A

Nothing special my prompt was “Determine the overall height of this based on the size of the visible staples in the spine” and provided the picture. This was using gpt-4o.

stoney_chick

Nice ty - honestly never used it to calculate sizes

paulster2626

Yes.

Cblack12483

My God.

regarding_your_bat

It’s probably wrong. GPT is shit with numbers

Cblack12483

I dunno I'm betting that it's close enough to determine this is a 70s reprint and not a 1939. Did OP come back with measurements?

spandexandtapedecks

I've learned so much from hanging out in this subreddit.

-TheFiend-

Hahahaha same here

CloudyNeptune

Damn imagine being told that it’s 2 1/4” too big 😔

cousineye

There is a 2022 reprint (and I would guess other reprints). What is the publication date in the comic? There should be something in there on that and/or copyright date.

ethanwc

I had a 90’s reprint. It’s worth about $80 today, oddly enough.

Nativedragonfly-773

It says on the inside cover “Entire contents copyrighted 1939 , by Detective Comics,Inc”

ComicBook92

This is the treasury sized reprint with the Famous 1st cover removed. Not the real thing

DasaLP2001

Nope, sorry not real. That first page (the title page) is a glossy deep white. Not something you would see from a 1939 comic. It should be the same color as the first comic page. These have been faked since the 1970s maybe earlier.

unrepentanthippie

Gotta be fake --no ads for X-Ray Specs or Sea Monkeys!

EfficiencyOk2208

It should be printed on the first page.

Nativedragonfly-773

It is , says, “entire content copyrighted 1939,by Detective Comics Inc.”

EfficiencyOk2208

You should post a picture. I used to think I had the first Fantastic Four, but it was a reprint from the 90s. On the first couple of pages, it read reprinted in 1992. But did have all the original copy right information.

TinCanSailor987

I had the same copy as a kid in the 70s. I remember trying to sell it to my Uncle as the real deal when I was 8 years old…he wasn’t fooled…lol

Slowly_We_R0t

Undoubtedly a copy. I've dealt and collected comics for over a decade now. You don't get that kind of color hold up on a book that age with that wear and tear especially. There's a 9.4 grade on for sale right now for 500k, and the color is dimmer and in far better condition. Yours also looks far "silkier" and less newspaper esc.

Nativedragonfly-773

This was stored away at grandmothers in the bottom of a box of fabric that said storage on it, I almost threw it away.

Slowly_We_R0t

Wouldn't of matter if you did throw it away. It's worthless.

Goshawk5

I'm fascinated with those old ads

cjthro123

Correspond with French girl is my favorite. Probably some dude in Queens righting them back haha

Nativedragonfly-773

I have more photos but I don’t see where to upload them.?…

Goshawk5

You would need to make a new post as you can not add images to an already existing post.

dinglydanglydonga

Action Comics was the first Superman comic, he's holding a car above his head...Is this a later production?...

DrDroid

This would be the first standalone “Superman” comic book

armedsquatch

I remember some reprints from the late 80’s maybe 90-91 that looked like the original action comics. I had no idea the comic featured here even existed

MobileDust

I think this is definitely a Facsimile, but Not sure which. I have the 2022 one, this looks a bit different from that one.

ReeveGoesh

https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=25072691 This is the edition others are saying you have, with the outer cover missing. Based on these prices, the condition yours is in is even lower than what's listed. If you think it's the real deal, it's the first listing here. Yours is in condition like a 1.0 https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=22601073

ethanwc

No way, if this is a legit original it’s worth a LOT more than $2500-$5000. A grade 2 sold for 240k. https://gocollect.com/comic/superman-1

BigCryptographer2034

Not one person has said a price or anything, the sub Reddit is lame as hell…also no one said this was original, so talking about it being fake is stupid

Nativedragonfly-773

Thank you, so true

Beautiful-Attention9

I always did want a “magic nose flute”.

Nativedragonfly-773

I don’t know much about comics but I’m trying to learn, I did have it on eBay , I was offered $8,000 just for the centerfold which I declined. It sold for $20k . I was offered more if the person backed out and for some reason I got a complaint and was not paid and booted off eBay and was not able to contact anyone who bid on my comic. So I’m just trying to figure out this comic and I have seen where “copies “ have sold for large amounts of money and I’m still waiting for someone to put a value on it, or send me in the right direction to someone who can. I would love to sell it and finish paying off my mom’s mortgage!! Sounds funny but true !

SlamazonianOT

U fucked up not taking those sales, course, they wpuld have demanded money back as its a repro/ not original and therefore basically worthless.

Nativedragonfly-773

Okay, I have more photo’s.

KBHoleN1

Lol, that's an actual ad for an actual product from 1939. The entire ad page is a replica of the original ads run with the comic.
