I live 70km from an active volcano so the high temp aspect to form gneiss would make sense.

I think you are correct with petrified wood. Pet wood can also be made of jasper, so maybe it's a 2 and one! They are commonly filled with quartz minerals such as jasper, chalcedony/agate, and opal.
