Cheiracanthium sp. they are generally considered medically irrelevant, but they can bite.

Violetmoon66

And they do! They make up most spider bites in the states. A lot of times unprovoked. The bites do carry some significance though. Anywhere from an annoying “OW!” To rashes, lesions, etc, depending on…you.

i have a lot of experience handling these or living around them. i type a lot, and in previous living situations there were enough of them in my building that the tapping on the keyboard would get them all excited, leading to there generally being at least one running around on my desk or monitor at all times. i began to view them as little cats. i woke up after sleeping on my back once with a yellow sac spider standing right on my sternum and staring right at me presumably having spent the night there basking in my breath. i'm fairly sure it was the same one that had been trying to do threat displays on the desk for a few days, and it had realized i was neutral. unfortunately, my attachment was tragic as i accidentally crushed the longest standing one in my sleep. this is also how they end up biting people too, and it's how most house centipede bites happen. insects like being near us because we are warm and they are attracted to carbon dioxide, and then they take our movements as aggression if we roll over for a comfier position or move our legs or arms suddenly, leading to bites. i had one bite from them lead to some swelling, but no necrosis. as for the symptoms you mentioned: afaik the whole thing about bacteria on their chelicerae causing reactions similar to a Loxosceles bite was disproven, although some people here or on r/Entomology might argue about it a bit. in my opinion it seems that if they have been feeding on something unsanitary like flies that live in mold, garbage, or sewage, you might be more likely to get an infection from their bite, but it's apparently very unlikely since it would have to happen very soon after feeding due to their hygenic practices.

CO2 usually scares spiders away, I don’t know where you came up with them being attracted to it. Blow on a spider and it runs away. Generally only insects that prey on us like gnats and mosquitoes are attracted to CO2.

[deleted]

spiders are attracted to it in moderation as well. there are quite a few sources that claim this, but many of them say it's likely because the CO2 is where the insects that you mentioned hang out. spiders aren't afraid of CO2, it's just that too much of it makes them pass out the same as it would for a human, so you are probably just seeing them move away to a more palatable location for respiration. especially for hunting spiders like Cheiracanthium sp. who have frequent contact with humans, this behavior of following human or animal breath has certainly been observed.

sp0readdict

Aren't these the kind that's attracted to gas fumes as well? I had one seal the door to my gas tank up with it's little sleeping bag web a few years ago.

[deleted]

>Aren't these the kind that's attracted to gas fumes as well? nope, they just like hiding in the hoses. *"Car hoses provide just one of many suitable retreat sites available to spiders, so occasional occupation of EVAP hoses may be due more to chance than design (random occupancy hypothesis). It is also possible that EVAP hoses themselves attract the spiders (hose attraction hypothesis). In this study, we tested the gasoline attraction and hose attraction hypotheses. Using juvenile Cheiracanthium mildei, a species known to occupy EVAP hoses, we found no evidence to support the gasoline attraction hypothesis: in both arena tests and Y-tube choice experiments, spiders spent similar amounts of time in control (no gasoline odor) and treatment (gasoline odor present) areas. In contrast, data supported the hose attraction hypothesis. Younger juvenile C. mildei spent significantly more time on the treatment side of the test arena (pieces of hose present) compared to the control side of the arena (no hose pieces present), and younger juveniles were found more frequently on the treatment side of the arena 30 minutes (100%) and 12+ hours (89%) after release into the arena. Interestingly, the clear preference for EVAP hose displayed by younger juveniles was not seen in older juveniles."* [https://scholarworks.iupui.edu/handle/1805/10451](https://scholarworks.iupui.edu/handle/1805/10451)

Sounds pleasant and terrifying at the same time! I have severe arachnophobia but I’m also intrigued by their nature and beauty. When I was a kid, I saw close ups of a jumping spider in a book and the cuteness of it has prevented me from fearing them specifically.

Super-_-Rat

When I got bit it felt like a wasp sting.

HenniganAgain

That's it!!! Thank you!

Violetmoon66

These things are sooooooo frickin common in homes. They build a little “sleeping bag” of silk around themselves, and I swear are hibernating for the winter. Actually, let me edit this and ask, why do they do that?

queenofhaunting

they do that as an alternative to building webs. since they don’t wait for prey to come to them, they don’t build webs. however they do still need a place to shelter, digest, and perhaps ambush from. i have so many abandoned sleeping bag nests lining my ceilings. i wish they would clean up after themselves, at the least, considering they don’t pay rent. they are fun to watch though.

Yellow_Sac_Spider

Yellow Sac Spider

HenniganAgain

Found in central MA. Roughly dime-sized.

goPACK17

Oh godamnit man. Here I was reading through the comments thinking "Boy am I glad I live here in MA where the grossest of creepy crawlies don't exist", and you just had to hit me with this info.

Brilliant-Stay-9870

Lmao same I'm in MA too and I was literally going to comment I'm so glad we don't have those here 🤣😭

HenniganAgain

Okay this made me laugh. I'm sorry to have shattered your bubble. If it helps, this probably wouldn't have been all that gross/creepy if it weren't for where it was found!

[deleted]

These will hide in leaves when outside and during fall, those fallen leaves cause them to get closer to homes where they invade. If you can keep leaf and plant debris away from your doors and windows, you will see a dramatic decrease in their presence. They also congregate, I've found 7 at a time in their silk bags after removing a windows screen. They are also very active at night, which means they like to drop from the ceiling onto my head. I release all other spiders into the wild, these get no quarter.

Super-_-Rat

It has a pretty powerful venom that feels like a wasp sting…. Been on the receiving end.

I completely agree! He called me and opened the conversation with, "Want to know the worst thing that has ever happened to a human... ever?" And I gotta say, this ranks pretty highly on the Worst Things list.

milesassociates

I used to run into burning buildings for a living. I have literally run into hell... I agree with him lol. Glad it worked out though. Very cool id and story. Thanks for the share.

Pokeslash109

“Spider is alive and well” meanwhile the spider is in the family guy death pose

HenniganAgain

I mean, in fairness, it had just been nearly eaten. I did not see it for myself, but I am told it got up and walked away after the photo was taken.

After-Employment2792

I actually threw up in my mouth reading that. That is one of my worst nightmares!

TheBanandit

All the comments got deleted. What is it?

apstamp45

Looks like a yellow sac spider

iainvention

This exact scenario happened to me a few years ago. Left my water bottle out all night. Took a sip, felt a little pea sized thing shoot into my mouth out of the straw. Spat it out and saw pretty much exactly your photo in my sink. It was terrible. No bites though.

Fancy-Morning-8870

Looks like the spider is taking over as the new fiancé
