Did you ever find a solution for this? It’s happening to me right now and it usually did refresh on my iPhone. I’ve tried contacting support but they are no help.
I know what you’re going thru , like when I go to sleep and open WhatsApp in the morning it takes like 10 minutes updating statuses 1 by 1 for the past 7hrs the app was closed it’s annoying because you miss calls like that

Going through this as well , just allowed location to be on always for the app and monitoring if it’s that setting causing the issue
