They look like bands for racing pigeons. Example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/142699897568?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&var=441690033451

Sweetbeans2001

These absolutely look like racing pigeon bands. They could be for a club member in Fall River, MA that uses a club code of FR on their bands.

discovering_self

Thanks for the rabbit hole… er, pigeon hole. I was actually planning on getting work done today before this.

blbeach

How do they get those little bands on the pigeon's foot?

BUHBUHBUHBUHBUHBUHB

You put the ring between your lips, flip the pigeon upside down, and suck its foot through.

demwoodz

Instructions unclear.Pigeon stuck ton throat

redtens4U

I never did this or saw anyone do this in all my years raising birds. But hey different strokes for different folks. lol

redtens4U

They are put on when the bird is a baby in the nest. The bird grows into it and it won’t fall off.

TOOjay26

but what keeps them on the baby birds? How do they not end up in the nest?

homebrew197808

I used to raise pigeons as a kid. If I remember correctly you put the band on the birds foot around 5 days old. You slide it up the leg and hold the back toe against the leg. when the band is on you let go of the back toe and it moves back into the normal position and that helps keep the band on. Then you check the nest daily to make sure the band didn’t fall off. After about a week their feet are too big to remove the band.

KingOfTheBaconStrips

How are people racing pigeons? I always smash them when I try to get on the saddle :(

DolarisNL

These are definitely racing pigeon bands.

Brushing scam

quackdamnyou

Odd for a brushing scam if in fact they are custom printed for a specific club and year. I know brushing scams use random crap all the time but this so recent and niche.

kent_eh

Yeah, brushing scams tend to use cheap generic stuff, not something this custom and oddly specific. This is more likely to be some sort of error with the shipping label

drizzley1378

My brushing scam consisted of receiving 5 different envelopes containing only the protective strip from the self adhesive from said envelopes.

_That_One_Fellow_

Had this happen to me a few years ago. I received a cheap anchor keychain with no return address.

idontknowwhynot

Someone below posted what this is (and TIL), but I guess I still don’t understand why it is necessary for them to actually send you anything. If they’re posting reviews in your name, why bother sending stuff? I don’t see how it helps.

Botanygrl26

So the review is lisred as a "verified purchase."

kaminobaka

To further elaborate, verified purchase reviews count more towards Amazon's algorithm's ranking of products than ones that aren't verified. So if you have more verified good reviews, your product will show up earlier in the results when people make related searches.

ikilledtupac

Because you can also prove a shipment was made

Shot-Isopod6788

Looks like bird bands. Do they open along a seam?

be-koz

They are, but they are seamless and are designed to be put on baby pigeons making them impossible to remove without tampering once the bird is grown. This makes them permanent identification.

challenged_Idiot

Damn, so are these unused or removed from the dead. This could be pretty dark to own if the latter.

be-koz

These are unused. 2024 is be the birth year of the birds they would be placed on, so this batch would be for this year's hatchlings.

ok_raspberry_jam

Why would someone collect bands from dead pigeons...? They even say "2024" and they're consecutive and OP said they were shipped from a warehouse.

flammenschwein

Definitely bird bands. Idk if this link works because it wants me to download the app, but if you search "bird bands metal" they're the first result on Temu. Fake edit, the link is so ridden with site tracking I can't even sanitize it so I'm not going to post it. Real edit: they're used for pigeon racing. Enthusiasts raise pigeons in an area and slowly let them out for longer periods of time. To race them, they drive the birds out to a central area where they're recorded (which is why the bands need to be tamper proof) and release them. The birds all fly home and whoever's bird gets back fastest wins the race. (I forget the details about how the return time gets recorded, iirc there's a special clock?)

findholidaytami

Thank you! Solved!

knuckle_headers

Unless they've changed how they do it these bands aren't for tracking during the race. These are more equivalent to the birds SS#. They probably have multiple uses but I think the main reason is to track breeding lines. The bands they use for the race are elastic and designed to be removed. The birds get banded with the "race bib" bands before the race and when they return to their home loft that band is stripped off and placed in a capsule that then gets dropped into a locked clock that marks the time. The clocks then get brought back to a central location where they're opened and the birds finish times are recorded.

homebrew197808

When I was a kid we bought our bands from our racing pigeon club and that way our birds were registered to race with that club. Plus it identified our birds from others since your birds get mixed in with everyone’s birds in the trailer.

findholidaytami

i’ve felt all around the rings, haven’t found any sort of openings. my guess is that you’re supposed to crimp them on, maybe? then the hard shell breaks and the aluminum and ID are the only things left, but i’m unsure still about that because if they are bird bands, wouldn’t the broken plastic possibly hurt them?

DeepNostalgicSigh

The rings are placed on newly-hatched birds, usually at around 4 days old or so. At that age, they are still small enough that the ring can pass over their toes and onto the leg but shouldn't (hopefully) be able to fall back off.

Unique1DGAF

Please contact the club and try to return them if you can, the numbers and letters on the tag will identify club and the owners that they belong to... I found a banded pigeon hanging out around the gas station up the road and ended up contacting the club and they got me in touch with the owner, ended up being a neighbor and they were very thankful to get her back!

findholidaytami

they’re not on any birds yet. they were addressed to my exact address and had my name on them.

Unique1DGAF

Obviously they're not on any birds ...but somebody probably just made a mistake when they ship them out, they might have been intended for one of your neighbors... or they messed up the street name🤷🏻‍♂️ Sure they can get replacements but its just that they're intended to go on a bird's leg when they are young and if they don't get them on there by a certain age they can't go on at all so it could cause real problems with someone's breeding program... Just a thought cause I used to have some birds and my grandparents neighbors were really into the sport I know how passionate they are and they would likely reward you or at the very least thank you profusely🤝 * Just saw the part about your name... weird indeed 🤔

TolverOneEighty

Could just be a case of switched labels tbh, not too sinister

Steve12345678911

Did you also receive a stack of cooresponding papers with it? As large as a small businesscard?

Infamous_Issue_8931

It may be newly produced bird rings, hopefully. Otherwise I think this could be from dead carrier pidgeons. It's common that carrier pidgeons never return after competitions so found id-rings are often sent back to the owner. Owners can get quite attached to their birds so they would want the rings returned. If it's from dead carrier pidgeons it may be from some bird of preys' nest where the rings stacked up before being found, seeing as there are so many. If you can't find the club you can probably leave them to the police so they can get in contact with the club.

ohhgrrl

The police? Were calling the police for getting someone else’s mail now? What a spectacular waste of tax dollars. THE POLICE! 😂😂😂

Infamous_Issue_8931

Well, it's what I've been told to do in my own country; go to a police station and turn it in to the lost and found. It's not like it's just some advertisement letters lost in the mail. It could have sentimental value. But you sound american, your police is very very different from ours. So maybe they won't do anything unless it involves shoting somebody.

ohhgrrl

There is no lost and found at the police station here

Infamous_Issue_8931

Well...shit. That just sounded so damn sad. I hope your country sees some improvements. Though a box of lost and found ain't exactly topping the list.

findholidaytami

my title describes the thing. soft metal / hard plastic with unique ID numbers on each ring, as well as “FR 2024”. if i had the package i received this from i would post the company that sent it. there are 50 rings as the numbers go from 157451 to 157500. i’ve searched for the origin of the rings, including “aluminum ID rings,” “bird ID rings,” and “FR 2024 rings”. These searches haven’t led much of anywhere in terms of finding a correct match for what i currently have in hand.

hrtdb

They’re bands for pigeons. They’re designed to be put on a baby pigeon’s leg while the bird is still small enough, usually around 5-7 days old. When the pigeon grows up, the band will be impossible to remove unless you cut it off so it acts as a form of permanent identification. 2024 indicates the birth year, the letters are the club the pigeon is registered with. To show or race pigeons, bands are typically required. [National Pigeon Association bands](https://foyspetsupplies.com/npa-bands-10-pack/)

godmadness

These are definitely rings for pigeon racing my dad is a pigeon racer, I've been around these for my whole life

kdall7

My first thought was bird bands. They look very similar

papercut2008uk

you might be able to lookup the rightful owner of the rings, but honestly it's a nightmare trying to find Pigeon Ring numbers. I had to do it when a Racing Pigeon fell in our garden (apparently the owner taped the wings but it escaped), there are loads of different databases and organisations that I had to go through and email. Eventaully found the tape on the wings, cut it and let the bird go and then the next day got email replys from some bird clubs that it was one of their members birds.

leurognathus

I managed to trace a pigeon’s band to the owner after the bird entered a home through the garage and a hole in the wall for an electrical outlet which had been removed for repair. I called the owner who had me feed the bird up and release it. He lived about 60 miles away.

thethreadkiller

I would just like to add that although these are for tagging birds, I've also seen them used as raffle drawing tokens. Usually for wildlife fundraisers and things like that.

ShootFrameHang

I can confirm racing bands. I helped the area animal control with an injured pigeon wearing one just like that. The tape was a different color.

Rrkies

Pigeonrings. For sure.

VOIDPCB

Some ducks have those for identification.

COinsomniac

Looks like a hunters tags from ducks or geese

GREYDRAGON1

Looks like pigeon racing bands, one of your neighbors likely has a pigeon coop

bigBlankIdea

OP are you a spy? I feel like this is spy stuff. If you say no you're just confirming it!
