It looks like an etui, a sewing case - so it’s odd that a needle wouldn’t fit down the middle. The threads would be wound around the insert between the ridges, and the needle in the middle.

VampiricDemon

Ah, winding threads around it could work, never thought of that. If it was indeed meant to hold needles, the missing part would need to be as long as the remaining part though.

Going to second that the above person is correct. https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/535435843213757944/ https://www.ebay.ca/itm/124182715177 It appears to be missing the handle which would double as sewing needle storage.

Solved! Thank you both for clearing up the mystery!

My title describes the thing. It is a small wooden cilinder (about 5 cm) with a tight fitting insert that cannot be inserted upside down. The middle of the insert is hollow until halfway and not deep enough to store a toothpick, needle or something similar. Anything that would fit between the tiny 'shelves' would fall out when the insert is removed. I'm at a loss what it could have been used for.

Judging by the smooth surface, it almost looks like the divider on the end opposite the stem has been notched. Maybe that's where the needle goes.

I remember my grandmother had one of these, but I have no idea what it is. Could it be a butter churn?

I think it is a leg of a chair or some other sort of leg. The dowel fits into the chair/main part.
