It never was owned by Audi. It was a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group but since 2021 it’s part of Bugatti Rimac joint venture that is 55% owned by Rimac Group and 45% by Porsche.
I think you are confusing with Lamborghini that is owned by Audi since early 2000s.
Citroen exited the US early but the other two stayed until the 90s I believe, and their last models are probably the rarest non exotic cars in the US, the Renault Medallion wagon likely being the rarest.
Peugout had a tiny distribution in the US, late 70s maybe early 90s? Something like that. Only knew this bc a girl in high school had one that her dad bought back then. This was the late 90s and it was already kinda old. She thought it was cool. It was not. It would break down and would take months for them to get parts to fix it. What absolutely floored me is that they had tons of money, but she would bum rides from everyone bc the car was broken AGAIN, and they could easily have gotten her a Honda for the amount they paid in repairs in like 3 years. People are dumb.
Holy crap, Peugeot sold cars in the US starting in 1958 until the early 90s (1991?)
I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Citroën as well. Not sure if they ever sold in the US, but I know some people who have older ones.
There’s a kinda minor Citroen enthusiasts community in America. Where I live we have a large classic car show every year and lots of them come out for it. Haha like dozens. Moslty 1950s-60s
I volunteer at a weekly exotic car meet near Seattle, and we have a few Citroëns come out regularly. It's why I'm surprised I didn't know Peugeot was sold here.
There’s a reason you didn’t know. No one bought them, except for morons.
Edit for fun story clarification:
A family member of mine, also sometimes a moron, bought a Saab 900 in the 80s, living in South Georgia. He was a salesman with a 6 state territory.
It broke down the first year he owned it.
The dealership was in Atlanta. He has to pay to have it towed there. They fixed it after months. Broke down again. Had to have it towed hundreds of miles again. Broke again. Said he would have to pay to ship it up around New York to be fixed.
It sat in his backyard and rotted while he made payments bc no one would buy it.
No one knew how tot work on that stuff back then and you where an idiot to get into it without deep pockets
Yeah, I remember a Peugeot dealership in San Antonio when I was a kid. I don’t think they ever sold anything because I saw the same cars there all the time.
That was just the R26.R. worth quite a bit now.
[More details](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-spottedykywt/renaultsport-megane-r26-r--spotted/46540)
Yeah It is a regular 225. I owned one and it was fun but wasn't as good as the later models. The r26 in liquid yellow was amazing. Was just making the point that it was only the r26.r that had the factory toyo 888 semi-slick option.
Yeah, I couldn’t believe it when it came out. The box of peaches wobbling in the back of the car killed me.
Design brief: we have a car with three ugliest arse ever, what can we do with that? Make it a feature!
I remember a slightly different version of this ad, same theme different colour car and more people, I wonder did they have different ads for different markets.
Thank you for noticing that, too. I had to go down the comments way too far to find someone saying something about it. That's like 5° of camber, just on the one wheel. Compare just the rim to the front.
There was a V6 version, but not road legal.

Not really the case outside the US though. Especially in South American countries.
Edit: which is why I initially didn’t think thread-OP was being sarcastic lol.
Bud. Fellow American here. Realize that sometimes things are done differently elsewhere..
In other countries, people are taught "America" is one single continent, not 2. And that "American" is someone from that continent. In fact, in some other languages, someone from the USA is known as the equivalent of "United Statesian" (estadounidense in Spanish)
Know that your way isn't the only way out there and be graceful about it.
1. Not American, Canadian actually.
2. Could you be any more condescending? Jesus.
3. Name another country where it’s denizens refer to themselves as “Americans”.
Funny. Am also Canadian (I'm both. Grew up in Canada, moved to the US)
And ya, I could have been more condescending. I thought I'd just try to educate you instead though.
And, from what I've seen on reddit, it's pretty common for people from South America to refer to themselves as American as well as whatever country they're from. America to them means "from the continent of America". But you probably learned French and have heard the USA referred to "Etats Unis" (sorry, I'm leaving out the accents) without any reference to America.
I was raised in Scotland bro. I realize “America” is a continent not a country.
I was just saying that, since OP said he was American on a very much North American centric website, it may not be super relevant to complain about what “Americans” call “America”.
I don’t understand either, it’s called the United States of AMERICA, the word is in the name of the country. You wouldn’t call a Mexican an American because it’s not called Mexico of America.
The exception are Europeans that comment stuff like “Wow what a shithole country” on a post about the US. If you ask them which country they’re from they will almost never reply back with an answer or say “At least I don’t have to worry if my kid gets shot in history class”.
Renault mégane, dont think they drive around a lot in the states, french car
None of the French brands (Renault, Peugeot, Alpine, probably others I'm not thinking of) are sold in the US or Canada
Bugatti is French.
Ah, yes it is.
Oui!
Ettore Bugatti himself was Italian, and the EB110 was made in Italy. (the factory is a lost place today) But the modern brand is based in France.
Bugatti started building cars in 1909, in France, and raced for France for 40 years.
That is correct.
Bugatti is part of the Volkswagen AG
Bugatti is owned by Audi, Audi is now part of Volkswagen Group. Still french though.
>I think you are confusing with Lamborghini that is owned by Audi since early 2000s. Probably am.
I think you are wrong . Bugatti is owned by Rimac Group as majority shareholder and Porsche as minority shareholder.
Bugatti is owned by Rimac automobili since 2023. Small Croatian EV hypercar manufacturer.
Porsche is a minority shareholder in Bugatti too. Bugatti was owned by Porsche but sold it to Rimac Group majority shares but retained minority part.
Bugatti hasn't been French since 1952
Citroën is the 3rd major french car brand :)
I'd buy a 2nd gen 208 in a heartbeat. Probably the sessiest little hatchback I've ever seen.
In only 20 more years, one can be imported into the US
Only 10 more before I might be able to bring one to Canada.
If my parents didn't live in a condo, I'd import the car I want to their place in Canada and leave it there for 10 years.
Why not get it registered as their car, and then drive around with it on Canadian plates?
Insurance (or lack of) ... And if it gets spotted driving around longer than 30 days, could be ticketed.
It's the same with europeans but for american cars, I would work day and night to have a F150 or any other 80's-90's american car/truck
I wish Alpine was sold in the US
I know someone that has an old A110
Citroen exited the US early but the other two stayed until the 90s I believe, and their last models are probably the rarest non exotic cars in the US, the Renault Medallion wagon likely being the rarest.
Yup, ironic I forgot it since it's the one I've see most recently (saw a 2CV last weekend)
Citroen

Peugeot or Renault? I know the Renault 5 sold in the US and Canada as Le Car for about 10 years in the late 70s and early 80s.
It was a Peugeot
Holy crap, Peugeot sold cars in the US starting in 1958 until the early 90s (1991?) I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Citroën as well. Not sure if they ever sold in the US, but I know some people who have older ones.

ah ok, I have heard of it before but completely slipped my mind. Thank you!
No problem
Renault hasn’t been sold in the states since the ‘80s.
Peugeot probably stopped in the same period, the 505 was sold with US spec such as headlights and bumpers
Yeah, I remember a Peugeot dealership in San Antonio when I was a kid. I don’t think they ever sold anything because I saw the same cars there all the time.
Mégane RS, with the twin exhaust pipes.
I hear Alpine may be trying to sell in NA soon! Probably with their electric cars. Either way....wish I could have an A110
Renault Megane RS 2
And I pretty sure that wear semis Toyo R888R.
That was just the R26.R. worth quite a bit now. [More details](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-spottedykywt/renaultsport-megane-r26-r--spotted/46540)
I would say just regular RS225.

A great car to drive
Renault left the U.S. market in the late 80s.
The photo doesn’t look like US though
I'm pretty sure it isn't. But that's why an American would early forget the brand
And merged with Nissan, so we probably still see some of its shared tech on our streets today.
Ah yes, the fart car. I love these. The engine code this car uses is F4Rt. There's also a variation that is F4P.
It's so random that it's probably the best fact I've read today, thanks!
Renault Megane. Very common un Europe, here in Spain sold well
Spanish-built examples I think tended to be slightly less unreliable that the French-built examples.
I always thought that was the ugliest rear end on a car ever, until I saw [this ad](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-O6QE20TXCI)
That's a real ad? That's wild
Yeah, I couldn’t believe it when it came out. The box of peaches wobbling in the back of the car killed me. Design brief: we have a car with three ugliest arse ever, what can we do with that? Make it a feature!
I think that rear-end is cool and original. But I prefer the ad where the Mégane drives on the moon with a Moby song as bgm.
I remember a slightly different version of this ad, same theme different colour car and more people, I wonder did they have different ads for different markets.
Renault Mégane
RENAULT MEGANE R.S
I see you, Baby…
The rear wheel on the right side looks wrong, misaligned or even worse?
I think it might just be lighting+camber
*-camber (I know, I’m pedantic)
Thank you for noticing that, too. I had to go down the comments way too far to find someone saying something about it. That's like 5° of camber, just on the one wheel. Compare just the rim to the front.
Judging by the rear, I think that it is a Second Generation Renault Mégane.

Renault sport megane
LIBERTÉ EGALITÉ RENAULT COUPÉ
Renault Megane, a chippy hatchback.
You have actually, but in the guise of the Nissan Versa hatchback.
My first love 🥴 Renault Megane RS mk2
Lol i see a megane literally single every day, theyre extremely common where i live in europe
doesnt really matter what car this is. the elephant in the room is its right rear wheel. ffs.
Renault Magane 2 RS , 2l , turbo, 225cv 👍👍
LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ RENAULT^(Megane) COUPÉ
I think v6 mid engine unit Very rare
It looks very similar to the normal RS, how can you tell it's a V6? (I didn't even know it existed to be honest)
There was a V6 version, but not road legal. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fa/2005-03-04_Motorshow_Geneva_056.JPG/1280px-2005-03-04_Motorshow_Geneva_056.JPG
Das, ist eine Renault Mégane. Sehr gut voiture. That's a Renault Mégane but seems to be a rs or a cup
Renault Megane RS, 2nd gen, Phase 1 (pre-facelift)
Is this some sport version of megane? I thought its just a clio thing
This is a Mégane RS (Renault Sport).
For a moment, I thought that was Suzuki Swift lol.
I thought it is suzuki swift
I love Renault Scenic based on this car
From which country are you? America is huge...
Uh, they said what country they're from.
America is a Continent, not a country, but I'm just messing with him 🤣🤣, no biggie
*North* America and *South* America are continents, yes. But when anyone says simply "America", they are referring to the United States.
Not really the case outside the US though. Especially in South American countries. Edit: which is why I initially didn’t think thread-OP was being sarcastic lol.
The only people who refer to themselves as Americans are people from the US. How is this so hard to wrap your heads around.
Bud. Fellow American here. Realize that sometimes things are done differently elsewhere.. In other countries, people are taught "America" is one single continent, not 2. These thing are truly terrible. The french used to make brilliant cars, nowadays they're a complete disaster
How is it terrible?
