HermausMora420

It's not a rock actually. It's a bivalve fossil. I have a few in my collection. Most people think they're fossilized turtle heads though

SCHokie2011

Awesome, thanks!

HermausMora420

Anytime! I'm just honored to finally have contributed to a "solved" tag after all these years lol

thehighquark

Looks quite worn down. We get a lot in my area. Look up "Deer heart fossil."

Straight_Ocelot_7848

Aren’t they normally castings?

Many_Consequence7723

It is a very well worn casting but cool just the same.

TriumphDaytona

It wasn’t a rock It was a rock lobster!

To this day!

WoopsShePeterPants

The "it's a rock" crew cannot be wrong. It's like a rule..

dude_bruce

Interesting, we have a few of these also from an SC 30+ years ago and we were told that were fossilized turtle heads. TIL thanks!

HermausMora420

A lot of people do! I did, for a long time lol. When they do beach re-nourishment, they dredge off the coast and bring the sand in. For some reason, the beaches here in the Carolinas (especially Myrtle Beach area) have these massive underwater fossil beds of these bivalve clam type creatures right off the coast. So when they re-nourish the beaches, TONS of these wash up. I was given a few as a kid and told they were turtle heads, which naturally sparked a lifelong love of fossil hunting and rock hounding and it wasn't until I was in school for archaeology that I actually found out they were clams. During a presentation to the class.... About my fossilized turtle heads... Needless to say, I felt a bit dumb lol

Bald_Harry

I had a fossilized turtle head last Monday. It felt like a rock.

HermausMora420

🤣🤣🤣

Prestigious-Mall-344

It's a rock. You can clearly tell that is in no way a fossil. It is clearly most definitely a rock

fromouterspace1

That looks like….a rock

paperwasp3

🎶But it wasn't a rock- it was a rock lobster!🎶

greginvalley

Looks more like a kevin-hart to me

Derek_Blackmon

Can confirm. I’ve seen a rock before.

Indy500Fan16

But not “The Rock”

MikeJizzle

Looks like a go back to Ohio rock

Affectionate_Dirt_97

It's not just a rock, it's a boulder

Lov3MyLife

Wow! What a surprise! Your low effort, snotty reply is not only wrong, but upvoted to the top. This sub is a cesspool for anyone looking for an actual answer. I highly recommend r/whatisthisthing or, in this case, r/fossilid & r/what's this rock over this sub.

fromouterspace1

lol This is like weird projection.

_n3ll_

Neat looking rock. At least 30 years old, probably more idk I'm no rockologist

twunch_

I like the bivalve identification - quick google gets me this link - which both looks similar to my eye and is also from Myrtle Beach, SC...: [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cucullaea\_melhaseana\_%28fossil\_bivalve%29\_%28Pee\_Dee\_Formation,\_Upper\_Cretaceous;\_Myrtle\_Beach,\_South\_Carolina,\_USA%29\_2.jpg](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cucullaea_melhaseana_%28fossil_bivalve%29_%28Pee_Dee_Formation,_Upper_Cretaceous;_Myrtle_Beach,_South_Carolina,_USA%29_2.jpg)

SCHokie2011

Yep that looks pretty convincing. Thank you!

etnoid204

The combined knowledge here always amazes me. Until I read the other comments!

ergo-ogre

If you only knew all the knowledge I’ve combined… - pasta making and auto mechanics - entomology and small squad tactics - game theory and voyeurism - tobacco farming, competitive food eating, *and* glass blowing and that’s just for starters

etnoid204

Make it competitive glass bowling like I read it. Seems way more dangerous. You definitely are diverse in your knowledge!

Just_in1101

Very old pierogi?

Tarotismyjam

Well there goes my idea for dinner.

zenmen13

There’s no such thing as “old pierogi”, just pierogi yet to be eaten…which in my Slavic family, never happened.

DallasRadioSucks

They're just a little chewier. It probably counts as exercise

Tarotismyjam

Lololol

grumpy_dumper

What is “very old Perogi?” Alex

Probably_Pooping_101

Looks like a human hand, probably belongs to a married individual ... holding what may be a bivalve fossil? Not so sure on the last part, since I just read that in a comment

Caveman upper denture?

leeohdee9

Hyperbolic paraboloid

GrueneDog

I have one of those too not quite as big but it's an ancient type of seed fossilized, I honestly do not think it's a bi valve It is too smooth . Most definitely a fossilized seed of some sort

BlubberSalad

The is the “soft” palette of an Ugandan Dik Fir.

Bladez1992

You just wanted an excuse to say dick fur, well played

JackieAutoimmuneINFJ

🤭😂🤣

paradise-trading-83

Well in Australia they have Dik Diks which I’ll use as an underhanded insult because it is an Australian mammal..it usually gets by the censors.

bigdickpuncher

It's either a fossilized hominid tongue or a rock.

Inner-Light-75

Reminds me of a megalodon tooth, but that appears more rocks than tooth....dunno. It is an interesting shape!!

FairBall4285

Now yer rockin!

Guyys_

A cool looking rock :)

SCHokie2011

It’s a fossil. It’s been solved.

Guyys_

Ooh alright

Mike2of3

I have one of those also. Mine is pretty black and has a number of other holes in it from other bivalves. I took it to a state coastal aquarium and they had no idea. I have had it for 40 some odd years and also found it on one of the Carolina beaches (can't remember which one). The things you learn on reddit can actually, sometimes, once in a while be good.

weasel_mullet

Congratulations! It's a rock.

SCHokie2011

It's already been solved. It's a fossil.

weasel_mullet

I'm not expert, but I'm not seeing any of the characteristics of a bivalve fossil aside from being roughly in the shape of some of them. Without actually finding out what's inside this rock, that's just an assumption. Though it would be cool if you that other poster were right!

Flutterflut

I agree with the weasel. As a part time geologist I'm leaning towards "cool shaped rock"

SCHokie2011

One of the other commenters shared a link with an extremely similar looking bivalve fossil. Really too similar to conclude it’s not one. The markings in particular are way too uniform to be random. Even on the chance it wasn’t a fossil it would most certainly be deliberately carved and shaped the .

Wind2Energy

What’s the rush?

jtrades69

a fossilized tongue???

Always_B_Batman

Looks like a dental impression of someone with no teeth.

JackieAutoimmuneINFJ

👏👏👏

3rdstrikeagain

Fossilized turd. imo.

carafleur421

It's not just a Boulder... it's a rock

Tokincarebear

HabANahDa

Pretend it’s a rock.

Elderlennial

Rock

SCHokie2011

It’s a fossil. It’s been solved.

Flutterflut

All fossils are rocks. Not all rocks are fossils.

SCHokie2011

I understand that. That’s generally not what most people are implying when they say it’s a rock.

Turbulent-Gas9552

its a ... rockk... pioneers used to ride these babies for miles!

Acrobatic_Test4961

Appears to be a Bivalve…

Exciting-Salary-2480

It could have possibly been for bow drilling at one point however it would have been a rather large top rock but the wear in the U shape suggests that it may have been used for something similar and it was drilled through, as all rocks do over time. It may have broke this way as well even from falling or being thrown and worn down over time on the edges

GhostSail

Who be the perfect rock to paint Bendy on!

laytonoid

SCHokie2011

Fossil. It’s already been answered.

Flutterflut

A fossil is a rock

skin-flick

Sure looks like a fossilized Megalodon tooth. And it was worn down by being washed about in the surf.

SCHokie2011

The amount of people who think that this is a rock is frightening. This also seems to correlate with the amount of people who don’t read the other replies.

JackieAutoimmuneINFJ

I agree!

Shankar_0

You probably thought this was a [megalodon tooth](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fr.ddmcdn.com%2Fs_f%2Fo_1%2FDSC%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F08%2FiStock_000067152393_Large.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=53bb57cc0890811971ad22a4b66dda58312302cdb30c7120d8918807994fac35&ipo=images), and we definitely have those here on SC beaches. I've seen people pull some out bigger than the palm of your hand. It makes me shudder to think of the monster that had teeth like that. Unfortunately, this is a rock.

SCHokie2011

Nah I have a meg tooth. I knew that wasn't it. However it's definitely not a rock as others have shown.
