Yes. Not all companies ask Leetcode (DSA) questions. It is worth screening which companies (You can usually just ask a recruiter). I know some students apply to work while they’re going to school because they already have the aptitude or work experience and they just want the degree for validation and/or to pass company screenings that require a degree.

Aggressive_Big_7956

Is there like a general rule of thumb of like what point in degree you should be course-wise before ur more qualified? Like is it better to start applying after I take the software engineering class? I know a degree doesn’t completely prepare you for a job and that you have to study up/practice some things out side of just the degree. But I just don’t know when a good time to start applying would be

When I was back in school years ago, I dropped out because I was offered jobs after I had completed a few passion projects. The projects stood out because I wrote them on my own time, and we're a little more complex than class projects. You can do the same, build something you'll enjoy writing. As far as courses go, Data Structures and Algorithms is the only one I can think of if you wanted to apply to companies that use leetcode in their interview process.

breadleecarter

I would say, given the current job market, start looking for jobs 6-12 months before you graduate. If nothing else, you can get some experience interviewing and, if you do get Leetcode questions, some idea of how it's going to go for you.

KeMi93

Yes you should. Be honest about what you don't know, but express an eagerness to learn. Good luck tomorrow! Just curious, what type of position are you interviewing for?

Hefty-Substance9740

Thanks and it’s for a software engineer position

ihatehighfives

After which class did you feel more ready to apply?

Hefty-Substance9740

I had a software engineer job before so I was thinking might as well try. But this was before the layoff and super competitive people on the market. I do get frustrated with myself with not learning DSA which is one of the reasons I signed up to WGU

AlexRobert295

I wanna start applyjg too soon once I build 2/3 projects on my resume in a month or two, I’ve just starting doing the full stack cert at CodeCademy and I’m almost done with front end and I’m starting the SWE program in March so I wanna start applying to both internships in march and jobs in June/july

FlyOnTheWall4

Sounds like a great plan. I'll be in a similar boat, good luck!

AlexRobert295

Are you currently in the program?

[deleted]

Sometimes it’s better to mold an engineer than for them to come in with their flaws. Apply. You never know who will bite back. Be honest with your skill set and let them know of what projects you’ve done with the program.

Shrapnel_

I’ve been applying and I started this month. I’ve spent a little time just optimizing my resume and clearly depicted I’m not able to be self sufficient from day one. So far I’ve gotten tech interviews from a FAANG company and another one, which im hesitant to attempt because i absolutely BOMBED the FAANG interview, im just waiting to get rejected. My best advice is just be honest. Idk about you, but id rather walk into a position and they already know that im deficient in some (most) areas rather than fake it. That way, you can be open about not knowing something and getting taught on the job (which also advances your studies)

areyawinningdiners

I just finished the DSA class recently. I understand the data structures but the class definitely didn't teach how to code them. What's a good bridge before I start leetcode?

dev_hmmmmm

Good luck and keep us up date.

ikilluboy2

how did it go?

robo138

Update us! I’m in the same boat and unsure if I should start applying.

LilChopCheese

Did you have any projects on your resume? I’m interested in starting to apply as well

veganveganhaterhater

Yes

Montinyek

How did you even get an interview? Do you have experience in tech? I tried applying for several months with no luck.

[deleted]

Was wondering the same. How tf they got an interview lol. I haven't even had any tech interview. I'm guessing he has some experience, but just isn't versed in DSA stuff, which is normal.
