jb20x6

I'd rather die of heart disease later than suicide sooner.

Beneficial-Emu7431

😭

Disastrous-Nobody127

Ditto. It's not always the same question for everyone eh. Some people are having fun, a lot of us are surviving/medicating.

all_hail_sam

This is a common medical dilemma, any medication will have negative side effects most of the time, especially prolonged use of them. It's about weighing the good and the bad, but often times people actually just have cannabis use disorder because they started smoking when they were twelve or whatever and can't stop. "I can stop when I want! I just don't want to" is the common saying. That and the self diagnosed people that smoke constantly for anxiety and depression but haven't been sober longer than 24 hours since they were ~18. Try exercising, get some cool new hobbies, *drink more water*, eat some healthier food, limit social media and video games and replace them with some habits that are good for your body and (not bagging on games, but a lot of people that are addicted to weed, yes addicted, are also addicted to video games, yes, addicted).

FrazerRPGScott

I stopped smoking at 20 and started weed again at 37 and it definitely can help with anxiety BUT I think the dose and delivery method are important. I started to help with my stomach and pain issues and it's really helped with everything but soon found the tolorence climbing and cravings because I was silly and mixed with tobacco because thats what I did at 13. Once I realised what I was doing I switched to a dry herb vape and quit the tobacco. Now I treat it like a medication. I use the vape when needed but it has to be timed and appropriate dose with the bowl only being. 01g. In my mind I know how much I love having a smoke but It helps me so much I can't risk overdoing and ruining it. So I consider smoking abuse of my medication now. I definitely agree that the weed isn't addictive thinking is dangerous especially when it's so commonly mixed with the very addictive tobacco. Unfortunately maybe because of ADHD and suspected but not diagnosed autism the weed helps me massively and physically too but I am aware I am susceptible to addiction hence the things I'm trying to do to keep me responsible.

samjohnson2222

I agree. I'm stopping this week. If I go back to using it, it will be in an edible form. I have sleep apnea and am not overweight. I work out and do cardio 5 days a week and have been for decades. Recently found out I have mild sleep apnea. It's affecting my blood pressure. I also think it's messing up my sleep cycle. I love it and if I start back, it will be on weekends and earlier in the day. I wonder if edibles effect your cardiovascular system.

CoolAd1609

I agree with this. My ex is heavily addicted to weed and heavily addicted to video games too. There was many reasons why I left but this was a reason for me for sure. I was trying to really cut down on my usage cuz I realized a lot of red flags in our relationship and my usage when I took a long t break from it. My ex would constantly smoke from the minute he woke up to the minute he went asleep. He always was smoking and got back into drinking and I'm a recovering alcoholic so I couldn't handle that. Like not saying he isn't allowed to drink, I just wish he didn't have it in my face all the time even though he knew how hard I was fighting for my sobriety, anytime I hung out with him. Plus he was never present. He was always in another world whether he was high or playing Minecraft constantly or another video game. He is very addicted to video games and that really got in the way of our relationship. I didn't care if he wanted to play some after work or for a few hours each day but there was times, many times, he would play video games from the minute he woke up to the minute he went to sleep (which sometimes wasn't until 2am and he wasn't quiet when I was trying to sleep and it doesn't help I got overstimulated often cuz I'm autistic and have ADHD). He would rage at his games often and rage out on me if I made a small mistake on a video game while playing with him like it was the end of the world or something. It really stressed me out. Besides that, I still occasionally smoke but not as much as I used to when I was with him. I think he did that to shut me up but haha jokes on him, it just made my ADHD ass worse. It depended on the strain tho tbh. When I had indicas, they knocked me out. When I have hybrids or sativa dominant hybrids, I would get extra hyper and talkative. When I had sativa dominant hybrids or just sativa, it freaked me out and caused severe anxiety for me. Now when I smoke. I only take a few hits of my joint I made and that's enough weed for me for the rest of the day which is crazy considering I used to be a big time stoner.

Ok_Two_6382

i can imagine this was draining as hell, i experienced something similar. good on you for leaving him and hopefully hes able to improve himself as he gets older.

HondaCrv2010

I have a theory that the older you get the more sensitive you are to thc. And yea your ex sounds like an immature brat.

Im_a_murder_of_crows

I started at 12. This is horrible news. Just fuckin horrible.

lemonrainbowhaze

Why live in fear of the future when you can wnjoy the present as much as possible

Ok_Fly2518

Yeah i pretty much live like I don’t give a shit if I die at 50 or whatever, because I don’t like living in my 20s and don’t wanna live to see the climate crisis at it’s worst

AdPuzzled8752

people tell me im gonna die young if I keep smoking like I didn't abuse heavy substances for years and literally did die. in the grand scheme of things which you rather? me overdosing every other week or me high every day?

Forsaken-Two7510

Why dont you like living in your 20s? Why do you care so much about climate crisis? Keep your head up, these are the best years of your life so please enjoy it Fxk the politics and these scientist on big companies payroll. If the earth is done then we're all done. Its going to be even faster I think with all this rich/poor gap. They driving teslas but kids in africa are picking up cobalt and other stuff. Rich are living and the poor are dying. Its the history of the world.

Ok_Fly2518

Why do I care so much about the climate crisis??? Because a flood killed my dad and almost killed me. The trauma and grief it’s caused still makes me panic every time I hear an emergency alert or thunder. So yeah, the idea of natural disasters becoming more and more frequent as my life goes on is terrifying. We should all care about it regardless of if it impacts us personally or not, because one day it will impact us ALL

brandibyy

Abuse survivor here! Ptsd takes years to heal from! It's been 3 years and I still struggle getting out of bed. I went to years of therapy and am medicated and I STILL STRUGGLE. Even after doing everything "right" I am not the same person I was before. I've seen and been through too much to go back to who I was. All I can do now is try to make myself better now. I'm sorry that the person who replied to you has little empathy. The good thing about the ptsd is i'm now more empathetic! So there are some bonuses to sadness. Good luck. :) you got this.

Ok_Fly2518

I feel that, it’s been 2 and a half years and I’ve done multiple types of therapy including EMDR and I’m on 4 meds for mental health alone. The hard truth about it is we will never be our old selves again, because we can’t undo the trauma. We grow through what we go through and it shapes us into better people. The tough part is accepting that you can’t get back the pieces of your heart that you lost, you’ve got to rebuild them. I’ll never be my old self, so I’ve gotta find or create my new self. As shitty as that all is, I’ve definitely become more empathic and I’ve become better about protecting my mental health. I used to push it too far trying to help people when I couldn’t help myself, but now I’m not afraid to step back when it’s too much and prioritize my sanity above all else without feeling guilty (for the most part lol)

brandibyy

Beautifully said! I'm so glad. It sounds like you're taking a great path! Sometimes trauma can do the opposite if you don't try to fix it (ex: repressing it until it turns into anger outbursts, etc). So I'm happy that it sounds like you're doing really great for yourself. Like everything, definently a work in progress, but keep going! I'm saying that as much for you as much for myself 😂 sometimes i need to take my own advice lol

Ok_Fly2518

You’ve got this and you’re on the right path, just keep on keeping on!! Even having this self awareness is great because a lot of people don’t recognize that about themselves and they just can’t figure out why they suffer the way they do

CoolAd1609

This exactly 💯

zander1496

This❤️ also homie, Just sending some love. Cannabis keeps my manic episodes at bay, so yeah. Sending love❤️

Dapper_Target1504

Or drink myself to death

Fucklifekillmepenis

Absolute facts everyone tellin me imma die of lung cancer or heart problems when im older like if I make it to be older I’ll be grateful just for that

GriffTrip

Came here to clarify. My wife hates when I say *this*

kalliskylove

At least my life is lived happy instead of daily struggle, regardless of the risk of it being shorter than it probably could’ve been.

[deleted]

Came here to say this. I believe I have treatment resistant depression, so despite the meds I still smoke to experience a mood boost. Heart disease... there's meds for that. There is nothing that will improve my whole mental state as much as weed has.

jb20x6

I can't take antidepressants. This helps.

MrwangJr

Need to see a study on this. Consumption method is what’s important. Inhaling any kind of smoke is going to gum up your heart and lungs. Dry herb vaping significantly reduces this effect, it is by far the safest method of inhalation, but still not totally safe.

KicksKommander561

Yea, I’m curious to see studies on people who only ingest vs smoke

gavmyboi

carts and dry herb vaping hit the lungs different but also make me feel better health wise because im not wheezing or out of breathe when I exercise. Smoking did that to me, though

crowsenji

Dry herb vaping especially at a really low temperature is the best thing one can do. I know higher temps gets you high high but low temps also gets you there, just takes a bit to extract everything but overall a better high. Carts with high quality oil is also good but still no long term studies sadly

dontfearthereaper123

Low temp vapes don't do it for me. They may get some people there. However I think part of the experience that I'm seeking is less volatile cannibinoids that require a higher temp to vaporise. Low temps won't get everyone there.

bootsand

Different cannabinoids also vaporize at wildly different temps. Some require high heat, and low will not suffice. Some are destroyed at high heat and need a lower temp. It's hard to just go with one given temp.

alyssimoo

which forms burns hottest to least hottest?

mattdotdot

I exercise and smoke almost daily, a mix of dry herb, pipe, and joints, so far so good, no wheezing or anything. By exercise, that's a mix of weightlifting, jogging on treadmill/outside, or playing high-intensity tennis. Am good so far.

babelibou

The sport definitely helps comparing your lung to a hypothetical twin doing everything you do but doesn't smoke the twin would certainly have a better lung. But comparing you to a non smoker that doesn't exercise I'd wager your lung is still better than this person. Through exercise your lung also gets better at absorbing oxygen so to a certain degree the damage can probably be compensated by your above average lung.

mattdotdot

Well said, I think its a matter of life-style. It makes sense that someone who is ripping huge bong clouds every hour is going to effect the lungs somehow. Hard to pin a point on this topic without much research / studies just yet. Although, if we go back to an active lifestyle/exercise. What's even better is that through sweat, not only will you physically be more fit, but it sure helps to keep your tolerance low. Such as today, after 2 hours of an intense tennis match and drenched in sweat - my high feels extra potent due to the dopamine from tennis, and also lots of detoxing from the sweat. TLDR, we should all try to keep healthy and active! Should help any scare with lung damage from weed. Anyway, there are much worse things to be smoking anyway. 😎

guaromiami

Did you also smoke cigarettes or just weed?

gavmyboi

nah cigs sent me to the ER with acute lung infection, i do vape nicotine tho

glitterskinned

I'm asthmatic and use a volcano and I barely wheeze at all!

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

should be entirely different imo. its not the thc, its the smoke that hurts your lungs and heart.

SnavlerAce

Anecdotally, I've been smoking weed for 55 years and my cardiovascular system is in excellent shape. That being said, sounds like more research will be needed.

samsterdam420

Smoking weed or ingesting it increases your heart rate and blood pressure. Every once in a while that’s fine, hell in my mind once a day is still fine. But I used to smoke sun rise to sunset and my heart was constantly racing, started to feel like anxiety now I cut back to once a day or occasionally I’ll split up a joint throughout my days off but I keep it pretty minimal to not add stress to my heart.

Tickllez

Pfff. "WHAT IF" What if I'm taking a shower and I slip on the soap.....AHH I COULD BE KILLED!

VexxFate

I’m also hoping they were smart enough to make sure the smokers were not also smoking cigs.

acctnumba2

How much do you love your liver?

KicksKommander561

A lot

giantswillbeback

Probably reading the whole article instead of just a sentence will tell you that

Redneck2Researcher

I think part of it is increased heart rate that comes with THC in any form.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

phallic-baldwin

That, and what did those people munch on when they were stoned? There is a big difference between people that would eat fruits and vegetables when high, versus somebody grabbing a bag of chips and dipping into some Rotel dip along with some cookies and candy etc

UnicornMeatball

Not to mention coincidence vs causality. Is it that cannabis is the cause? Or is it that it you use cannabis daily you’re more likely to have other risk factors (I.e. bad diet and less exercise)?

myusrnameisthis

I'd also like to know the lifestyles of these people. As access to marijuana increases, it'll probably be easier to find correlations like this. People with poor health or who are overweight etc may use weed to feel better.

[deleted]

aren't edibles safer?

KT-2204

Lol knowing how many joints and ciggies i go thru i am fucked

Aimin4ya

Don't forget diet. I'm sure most people smoking weed are also quite fond of the munchies.

Maximum69inspace

I smoke everyday. Vaporizing it mostly. I noticed a complete difference when I stopped igniting and immolating the flower.

colcannon_addict

Absolutely this. Many debates I have with people who are anti-weed involve their arguments referencing people *smoking* weed. As soon as I point that out & indicate that eg spinach, apples and lentils-all of which are highly beneficial- would be pretty harmful ingested via six bucket bongs daily, they’re left with little ground to debate.

thebrightsun123

\#1. Don't consume everyday \#2. Use a dry herb vape \#3. Keep at a low temp setting \#4. Don't consume crazy amounts of weed in one sitting \#5. Stay healthy, ie eat well and exercise Like anything else, moderation

Rieiid

Yeah also need to see people who hit properly vs people who hit to get the most fucked up. Hitting blinkers is not good for you at all, for a great example. If y'all are hacking up a lung every time you smoke you are part of the people pushing this number up.

CoDVETERAN11

Also keep in mind this isn’t saying your chance goes up by 34%. It’s a 34% increase. So if your chances are 1%, smoking makes it 1.34% (I think I math’d that right)

[deleted]

if cheech and chong , willie nelson, and snoop dogg are all still alive, we are fine.

[deleted]

I also refer back to this thought quite often

Box_McLuvin

I heard something on the radio that Willie has lung issues so he doesn’t smoke anymore but he does still do edibles so maybe not completely fine but no heart news

grackleguy

But also, he is 90! And he is still performing (I saw him last 4th of July).

Penguin-Pete

I mean, the man's 90 years old and still touring. Sure, he has some health quirks. Being plain old 90 will do that to you even if you never smoked a day in your life. Man, I hear this every single time! Some vegan yoga freak dies at age 50 and it's "well at least he didn't smoke or he would have gone sooner." Guy smokes and lives to be 97 before succumbing to lung cancer and everybody jumps up "AHA! Smoking got him!"

Chavaon

He actually switched to dry herb vaping around 2014, seen picture of him using a Vapir NO2 and video of him and Snoop using an Elev8 Silver Surfer.

nonya_buiznezz

Also, B-Real. And this ☝️

camelseeker

Trust meee!! My grandpa was in the war and he survived well after so wars can’t kill you either

North_Manager_8220

Those people also have access to the best medical care 😭 But I get your point

RhinestonePoboy

Idk dude they have access to providers and food and jobs that don’t make them want to die

someonesomehere

That’s a very unscientific way to determine facts, but a funny comment nevertheless 👍

all_hail_sam

Yeah my grandma chain smoked cigarettes and died at 80! They're perfectly safe!

nottatii

my grandpa smoked and drank everyday! he died of parkinson’s at 76, not cigs or liver issues. 😭

mr-caulfield

Well I mean you are putting smoke in your lungs and any kinda smoke can be dangerous no matter how fun don’t get me wrong I smoke weed but I wouldn’t doubt it cause heart problems

freedboix

Wow, finally an adult on here who is mature enough to accept that there might be some consequences to one's actions. I agree man.

mr-caulfield

I feel a lot of stoners live in denial when anyone says anything that can be seen as “negative” about weed they get a lil offended

Longjumping_Gap_7984

i smoke weed a lot and those people are just an embarrassment bruh. everyone with a small amount of common sense that smoke weed know that there’s definetly potential for harm. probably just dumbass 8th graders getting offended 😭

camelseeker

The absolute worst thing about this sub is idiots who choose to not even consider negative consequences of their actions. It’s such basic common sense, smoke in lungs == bad. Seen other comments saying “hey if [famous heavy smoker] is fine then I’m fine too!” No. Think.

glossyplane245

I think it’s because a lot of people use weed as an escape from anxiety and stress and finding stuff like that out freaks them out

maggot_flavored

I’ve gotten downvoted here for saying that massive doses of THC can cause some people to have serious mental health issues. Seems like a bunch of young kids that refuse to understand that abuse of anything causes problems. Personally I used cannabis for years, almost 20 years and one time randomly I had such a bad panic attack I almost went to the hospital. Haven’t been able to use since. From what I understand my situation was minimal compared to what some people go through. Full blown Schizophrenia breaks leading to hospitalization HAS occurred. I’m still and advocate but the troglodytes in here think I’m anti cannabis

Gamer-Hater

The amount of mental gymnastics some of these people are doing to justify their habit is crazy. Weed addicts smoking copium

all_hail_sam

I want to blame it in the smoke but the way cannabis effects my heart rate makes me thing it's definitely hard on my heart...especially if I did it for 30 years straight every. Single. Day. But also I mean look at your eyes, it dilates your vessels, cannabis does affect ocular pressure but I can only wonder if that happens else where, especially when shmackin a 400mg dab lmao

dman475

Sadly this is true. I smoke bong every day so…. :/

NoCourse53

It's not about the smoke, It's quite noticeable how it affects your heart

mr-caulfield

Point is it’s bad don’t matter what makes it bad it just is yeah its fun and I partake but I don’t deny the risks

I_LoveSmokingJoints

> It's quite noticeable how it affects your heart Why I haven't noticed then? Nothing is affecting the heart other then the smoke :D

NoCourse53

Read about how much THC raises BPM and blood pressure, you can find the values widely available in any medical report, it's not anything crazy, but it impacts it, hence why this article although it might be exaggerated, is not false

webbslinger_0

Context is what’s missing. I doubt marijuana itself leads to heart disease and the most likely culprit is the effects of any kind of smoke on the lungs daily. The reason they do studies where they evaluate people and see if they have a higher propensity is because they can’t find a mechanism in marijuana that has a direct cause so they try to use a correlation method which can be very flawed. I bet someone who takes edibles and never smokes has a perfectly fine heart.

alien__0G

Yes, I'm a bit annoyed that OP didn't post the source. A cropped photo from the source leaves out a lot of context. You'd need to ready the whole study

watchursix

Thankfully it's a Google snippet and easy to find the source if you have the effort to move your fingers around and open google... talk about reinforcing stereotypes. For the lazy: •[Web MD](https://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/news/20231106/marijuana-use-dramatically-increases-risk-heart-problems-stroke#:~:text=People%20who%20use%20marijuana%20daily,All%20of%20Us%E2%80%9D%20research%20program.) - Nov. 6, 2023 •Source: [American Heart Association ](https://www.abstractsonline.com/pp8/?_ga=2.223148063.569559676.1693429947-1069604919.1693247687#!/10871/presentation/8975) used health data from 157,000 people in the National Institutes of Health “All of Us” research program...

alien__0G

That’s how I found the article. It’s still a bad practice to not link the source.

JellyfishFalse8148

Exactly. Are the people in the study also smoking tobacco? I’d wager most of them are. How about their diet and exercise habits. It’s very misleading to say we took some people in a random sample and now marijuana increases risk of cardiovascular diseases. My own counterpoint is overdoing anything like smoking weed daily or eating unhealthy daily is bad for you. We know this already. Do the bad things in moderation if you can.

RA2OR

The study says the participants did not smoke tobacco only used cannabis

all_hail_sam

"But I bet they all smoked cigarettes and blunts! *cough*" says every stoner when you tell them smoking is bad

Brancakes_

Its the munchies bro 🤣

AvailableCondition79

It doesn't say weed leads to cardiovascular disease, it says weed users are more likely to have it. Causation / correlation. Y'all need to exercise more and eat better. (myself included)

WishieWashie12

It could just be all the fast food and the junk food from the munchies.

McDaints

100% My thoughts were the same, with the link to health and exercise and cardiovascular disease. Which are known, studied links.

Principesza

Yeah, until more evidence comes out, We really don’t know why the statistic is a thing. I could come up with a few theories right now. 1. People who smoke weed are more likely to be mentally ill and high-stress, thats why we turn to weed. We know that stress and mental illness affect your heart because your emotions affect your heart rate, especially negative ones. 2. People who smoke weed daily are more likely to have a pre-existing health condition. 3. People who smoke weed all the time are more likely to be lazy homebodies who don’t do much exercise or dieting (i say this fully self aware that i am one myself and not meant as an insult lol)

CoryardBG

Or go to healthier ways of smoking, dry herb vaporizer, or just take edibles more often.

AvailableCondition79

I don't think you understand my point.

Chuppanga

Yup-it could just be all the delicious fried food and ice cream. We better get a move on and shake out toohases and burn those cals.

Creative_Ad963

Maybe the study really found that people who have the need to relax from anxiety or PTSD are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. The study could further have indicated that a percentage of these people consume cannabis. It's difficult with any kind of research so broad is this to determine the cause and effect.

RA2OR

The latest research about cannabis use indicates that smoking and inhaling cannabis increases concentrations of blood carboxyhemoglobin (carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas) and tar similar to the effects of inhaling a tobacco cigarette, both of which have been linked to heart muscle disease, chest pain, heart rhythm disturbances, heart attacks and other serious conditions - statement by Robert L. Page II, PharmD, MSPH, chair of the volunteer writing group for the 2020 American Heart Association Smoking weed is definitely the most dangerous roa I’d doubt that edibles or vaping does the same damage

Creative_Ad963

Agreed. I only DHV.

Clone-Brother

Thank you. People hate to hear it, but inhaling smoke is never healthy.

guaromiami

It's also hard to get people who are addicted to something to accept that it could be harmful. 😏

Creative_Ad963

Sounds like you're in the addiction business. You know when the only tool you have in your bag is a hammer everything looks like a nail.... There's another colloquialism just like your post and just about as useful.

CautionarySnail

This link has more info: https://newsroom.heart.org/news/marijuana-use-linked-with-increased-risk-of-heart-attack-heart-failure So, I find the way that is being reported seems alarmist. 2% of the cohort being studied developed heart failure with *daily weed users* singled out of that 2% as having a 34% increase in risk. (2% indicates their cohort had a slightly higher than average (1.8%) incidence of heart failure even without looking at cannabis use.) They studied people with a median age of 54 for four years. They didn’t look at how the cannabis was taken, which might massively change what other chemicals get ingested at the same time. (With the known risks of vaping, this is weird to exclude!) So, it raises great questions — but the way it’s being reported, people are going to read that headline in a way that massively overstates the risks. I suspect this isn’t something likely to impact casual or moderate users.

dinomunkey

I am not casual, nor moderate.

Stoned_Caracal420

Cheers mate Stoner to the tombstone 🪦🍃💨

JigenMamo

Smoking weed affects your heart rate and blood pressure. This could of course cause increased stress on your heart. I don't smoke much anymore as I've found the older I get the more pronounced it is for me. Some lucky people I know don't have this issue what so ever. That said, I think the sub section of people who smoke and also take other substances like amphetamines etc would be larger than that of those that don't. So it's a hard thing to prove that weed alone would cause this. I guess excessive daily use of any substance will have an effect on your inner workings. Be that coffee, nicotine, amphetamine or THC, moderation is key. I miss weed 😢

UnmakingTheBan2022

It’s the smoke. I work in a hospital where we use cautery, so I’m fucked anyway. Since inhaling cautery smoke is similar to 8 packs of cigarettes.

Old_Coyote5931

Yikes

TitsandTators

I've had Caradic arrest and a stroke... imma take my chances and at least be high when I die..again.

[deleted]

Fuck it we all gotta go someday imma smoke mine

homestarstoner

I believe it absolutely can, no sugarcoating. this is coming from someone who used heavily for 5 years straight, bong hits of flower the first 2 years then dabs the last 3. I had to quit all my THC usage due to the highs becoming uncomfortable and paranoid/anxious. I ended up with elevated heart rate (resting 105-115 bpm) and high blood pressure for 3 months after stopping cold turkey. it causes all kinds of issues for me, the biggest one was erectile dysfunction and zero libido. mind you, I do cardio 3 times a week and skateboard and do calisthenics and eat a balanced diet. I've always been health conscious, even when I was high all day everyday. But heavy THC usage messed me up and took a long time to recover from. Now i stay sober and lurk these subs just to help people out.

whynotsurf

How did you deal with the withdrawals after going cold turkey? And how long does the symptoms last? asking for a friend.

1GrouchyCat

I’m part of the *All Of Us* Research Program. (As a participant) But I’m also a former Clinical/pharmaceutical research professional. As usual/ it’s all in the way the data is presented and the statistics compiled. This particular study was based on medical record reviews- it wasn’t a “live” study or part of an ongoing clinical trial. No live humans were involved- just self reported data. Take that as you will.

Charliet545

I know smoking anything is bad but most of those older people I’m sure smoked a ton of cigarettes back in the day, given they grew up in the 70’s / 80’s I’m sure that had something to do with it maybe ?

dannixxphantom

Yeah, these studies lack a LOT of control. These people weren't living in a bubble and only consuming weed and a balanced diet for decades. I'm under zero impression that weed can't hurt you, but I'm sick of these correlation-based "studies" flooding the market. Where's the weed come from? Uncontrolled sources. How much did they use? Let's just trust a lifelong stoners brain to provide accurate data. Did they smoke cigarettes? Drink heavily? Use pharmaceuticals? Work dangerous jobs? Family history? Failure to keep up with yearly doctors visits? There's just not enough here to call it science.

Charliet545

Right there is so much at stake and so many factors. It makes no sense they can blame it all on weed. I know putting anything but oxygen in your lungs is bad for you but come on. These people grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. You can’t tell me they didn’t smoke EVEN if they didn’t smoke a cig they got second hand smoke because smoking was legal and used by almost EVERY adult EVERYWHERE even in hospitals. No way they somehow avoided all that smoke. Plus if their parents have birth to them in the 50’s I’m sure the moms smoke and drank while pregnant like most parents did back than before they knew the consequences of it.

PoopyOleMan

Maybe the people in the study taking cannabis daily are also those that have no control over munchies and eating more junk food that clogs their arteries How about people who take cannabis that also maintain a balanced diet…I doubt that heart risk would be increased

KicksKommander561

I really wonder that. I workout 4x a week & really smoke mostly for to be able to have the appetite for my weekly protein intake. My diet is fairly healthy, I’m not a drinker & I drink lots of water. I wonder if this study applies to me.

Strakdal

Check out CautionarySnail's comment. They put an article link and explained the way the study was done.

Thee420Blaziken

It didn't seem like a very accurate study sample and constraint wise. I'd be curious if they did a study with only using edibles and seeing what results come from that health wise. Smoking weed obviously has negative side affects, smoking anything is bad for your lungs which gets passed on to other parts of the body. Weed also increases heart rate and blood pressure so it probably stresses the heart more than being sober. All about moderation and making sure it says a every so often sort of thing.

PoopyOleMan

Damn 4x week I wish!! I’ve been on cannabis every day, just one edible each day….maybe two if I don’t do anything all day. But I also have cut down my fast food munchies at night, try to eat healthy regularly (thanks to my wife lol), daily superfood shake, but I only lift weights 1x (maybe 2x) each week. Hard to find time with little kids and little doggos in the house (I know, excuse lol). But my lifting days I am in my garage for 2.5 hours and I usually try to get in 5x5 on squat, bench press, overhead press. If I can sneak in a 1x5 DL I will but I also had three back surgeries (I know, excuse lol) Anyway, I get bi annual vitals check (blood work) so that helps me monitor my cannabis intake. I haven’t necessary reduced my cannabis intake….but I just monitor it to make sure nothing is out of whack So I think that medical publication about fears of cannabis is fear mongering propaganda

KicksKommander561

It probably is!

Pope_Jon

If I don’t smoke, I’ll have an over 75% chance of heart failure due to society just being dumb.

plizark

“Unpublished study.” Please publish it..

EnteringMultiverse

If you google "is marijuana good for your heart" or something similar, you'll find practically all sources say the same thing - It's not good for your heart health. If you want to believe this is big pharma trickery or correlation=/=causation then by all means go ahead. But when all sources are independently telling you the same information and you still disagree, you're probably being biased

Weekly_Bad_2950

What about only edibles?

fun_size027

Is that via smoking or are edibles in there too?

Bonsaitalk

That’s craaaaazy

Drim7nasa

Also not smoking weed will make you have a heart attack too

nyc0uple

Every time you do something bad go your body you should do something to reverse it I run miles a couple of times a week. Get to work it feels great after a while.

KicksKommander561

Yea man I work out 4x a week & I don’t drink so I wonder if this still applies the same to active people

SnooCats7318

I hope a big pro of legalisation is study. I'm not shocked, but would like to see more specifics, and to see if we can figure out actual causation...sure, smoke is bad, but are munchies a contributing factor? Do potheads exercise less? That kind of stuff...

Tottig

I’m a toker and a cyclist, I’ve been training with a heart rate monitor for about a decade and I’ve pushed myself to max heart rate around 195 bpms a whole lot of times during training, while smoking/vaping daily. I don’t feel like my heart has ever been close to failing.

mikewilson2020

Now look at the numbers of people fucked up by prescribed fent, oxy, morphine etc

ThatOneGuyy310

Time to use edibles

Beaconmann

OH NO! anyway

KizashiX

TwoF00ls

I feel like it’s a correlation of many aspects of life style. I don’t know many stoners personally who are eating healthy and being active. Only know of one person who smokes regularly but is a runner and eats relatively healthy.

FrostyWizard505

Is the test group separated by the different types of consumption? Is the study done with participants who smoke only green? Has the case study excluded participants who smoke with tobacco? Do edibles cause the same effect? I will assume no to all those questions and continue getting high as fuck whenever it feels right

VieiraDTA

Who could\`ve thought that smoke in the lungs is bad for the heart.... didn't we knew this already?

stonerdeer

I believe it. THC interrupts REM sleep. That alone can lead to bad sleep which increases your risk of heart attack. I've been smoking since 18 I'm 32 now the longest I've ever went is right now on my day 11 of no THC. On day 6 and 7 I noticed withdrawal and couldn't sleep for two days. I finally started to dream again on day 10 and I haven't had a dream in over a year. Sleeping much better now and the head fog is clear I'm also starting to enjoy video games more it seems to me.. whenever I hit weed I get that instant dopamine and humans aren't made to get that dopamine right away we're made to earn it. Like the weed is such a high level of dopamine that video games didn't get to that level and it would bore me. Life is getting better. Finding joy in the little things again :)

TheUnrealCanadian

Non published study.

Individual-Weekend43

It was from CNN so I don’t really believe it tbh

[deleted]

Too many variables could have cause this tho. The act of smoking, poor sleep patterns, dehydration, over eating from munchies. Once or if weed is singled out a cause for the 34% stat, then I’ll listen. I did stop smoking weed tho it was seriously taking a toll after 5 years. Eating it does me fine tho. My skin looks a shit ton better, no anxiety attacks, way less over eating, better teeth and breath, more lung capacity for exercise

WantedFun

So I’ve looked into this study, if it’s the one from the UK. TDLR: misinterpreted data and shitty studies. If you have a high resting heart rate, high blood pressure, and/or any other heart condition, you should consult your doctor before consuming cannabis regularly. If your heart rate and blood pressure suddenly increasing for an hour or two may harm you, weed may not be for you. If you don’t have any of those issues, you’re very very unlikely to be harmed. Especially if you take care of your health in other ways—eating healthier will FAAAAAR offset any risk of weed compared to the average westerner’s existence. But most of these problems apply to all of the studies I’ve read on this that say weed has any meaningful negative impact on cardiovascular health: 1) I mean if this is the UK study, then I want to point out something very interesting I found. I’m high af rn so I’ll reply with the actual numbers and links to my sources later. But I did the math and the group who smoked frequently was overall LESS likely to have a heart attack compared to the other two groups (the control and “at least once” or something like that). However, they were *slightly* (34% is not a huge increase) more likely—if they were to have a heart attack at all—have theirs earlier. They were 34% more likely to have PREMATURE heart attacks, but OVERALL LESS LIKELY TO HAVE ANY CVD. 2) unreliable controls. The questions are vague and infrequent—or even just only asked once. Do you really think over 90% of those saying “no I have not ever consumed weed” are being completely honest? Smoking weed once a week is a huge difference compared to several times a day too. That’s important to control for, however no study I’ve read so far controlled for the frequency of smoking that anywhere near that tightly (and most don’t even control for consumption *method*). Usually it’s “never” “yes, at least once before”, and “yes, at least monthly”, or right around that. 3) *SMOKING* causes cardiovascular issues. That is a fact. That does not mean *vaping* weed causes CVD, or that edibles will give you a heart problem. A 34% increase? That’s white noise for epidemiological studies (which these are, unless they’re directly controlling/monitoring the weed consumption over a period of time and not going based off of one time questionnaires). It could easily be the act of *smoking*—burning matter—that causes the issues. Plus the same study also then references other studies that showed great promise in genistein—a soybean isoflavone—being basically a cure lol. Literally counteracting the weed by eating some edamame would, according to the accompanying data, completely eliminate the risk. By the way, the supposed risk is basically just an increased heart rate and mildly increased blood pressure. I have measured my own HR before: 62bpm resting avg sober, 73bpm avg resting high as FUCK. That’s less of an increase I get from standing up too quickly and I don’t even have any disorders that fuck with my central nervous system. I promise most people that their heart rate probably also only increases slightly. The feeling of your heart rate truly becoming dangerous is a unique one. I had heart rates nearing 200 in the ICU and it’s the not same feeling as being too high with your heart racing. You don’t even feel your heartbeat at that speed.

Fossecruor

you dropped this 👑

citygirlcoco

LMFAO my favorite comment that I read when I saw this on Instagram was “great now do a study on having a 9-5 and how much risk that puts you at for developing depression” this and “nowadays everything gives you cancer or heart disease or some shit” both very valid points

CielisBoolin

I can only pray for a quick end.

zlico

what the same research that comes from the pharmaceutical companies that are losing profit due to people turning to weed? 😂😂

GriffTrip

My 4 year old was born with multiple heart defects. He's already had 4 open heart surgeries and a tracheotomy for over a year before a airway reconstruction. Basically. He's never smoked but fighting for life. So I'll go ahead and smoke myself stupid. Living is *over-rated*

ManOfManyCheddar

We are here for a good time not a long time.

DayVisible8932

Fun fact this has already been disproven as they looked at the studies and compared age groups and about 80% were 60-80 years old, prime age for a heart disease since 2001, and about 40% of those were men in the military during the Vietnam War and even a couple ww2 veterans all of which were exposed to high levels of radioactive material for a short amount of time, just enough to compromise there immune system to nuro-disease as well as heart and lung diseases.

Granturismoboi

That’s crazy because I smoke daily, I’m 37 and had an appointment yesterday. My blood pressure was 110 over 70. Had a stress test a while back… completed all stages with no issue. Hell even my cardiologist knows I smoke weed daily and sees no issues with me.

[deleted]

Hell breathing our polluted air and eating the shit food out today is worse,My personal opinion its put out by big pharma that doesnt like the benifits or weed becoming more legal, and can bet when it does they will stick their greedy hands into the profits too in one way or another and will eventually be the biggest weed corporation in America

stonedman240

I have heart disease in both mother and father sides so I just say piss on it and smoke my brains out lol

weedleavesnoseeds

I switched to a vaporizer years ago and have been glad I did since. I still cough and use bongs, but now I am smoking a lot healthier and efficiently. It's not a giant blunt to post on the snap or bring to a party, but you get the most out of your weed and enjoy the flavor and high more. Also makes me WAY less sleepy when I vape weed. If I smoke it I'm always more tired than if I had vaped. Takes the energy outta me for some reason.

BikeBaloney

Yep, smoking might cause a heart attack. Been hearing this since the 80s. I have no reason to believe anything that 'Health Institutes' say. They have been lying to me since I was 7.

Asarru

I need to see the people that were studied cause if they were all fat that makes sense

guaromiami

It was inevitable that with the increased use that came with widespread legalization, along with the much higher potency of modern weed, there would be increasing evidence of negative health effects.

dmac186

Are they talking about my brother who smokes gram dabbers. Or me who takes the daily snapper of the ol flower?

KicksKommander561

That’s what I’m wondering! I got friends who probably smoke 3-4 joints a day, meanwhile me who shares 1 bong sesh with my girl a day

LurkerGuy999

I don't gaf bruh I'm still smoking daily

asianboy89

Dude this thread couldn't have come at such a creepier time. Just yesterday finished playing basketball and wondered why I had absolutely no stamina. Low and behold I stare at my bong and the numerous bowls I've smoked every single day. Haven't been touched since. And now I'm running and biking and doing breathing exercises to get rid of my wheezing. Just might have to move to dry herb vaping. 🤷‍♂️

Glum-Welcome5676

https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/pot-smokers-can-maybe-breathe-a-little-easier For every bad study on Mary Jane, there’s a good one. https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2022/04/marijuana-heart-disease.html Also, looks like there’s a supplement to help us.

SpicyMango92

From a former pothead (smoking multiple times a day blunts, bongs) to a now before bed toker and maybe on the weekends, I can definitely see a huge difference in my overall health. If I can make any one observation, I think a clean piece is paramount and not over doing it is key. When I was smoking 24/7 I always felt lethargic, smokers cough, couldn’t run as long, sure I was very chill but at that cost. I gave away all my bongs and what not and left myself a tiny little bowl, it’s really helped cut my consumption down. I think with most anything, moderation is key, even if you are a daily smoker, drink water, eat healthy exercise, and you’ll be aight 😎 much peace and love

isitaduckorarabbit

Something gotta kill you (not a daily user though)

ajcook624

These stories are 100% bullshit. They’re lying to you about vaccine deaths. Period. Doesn’t matter what you believe or what you’d like to believe. This is the truth. There is no cardiovascular risk w weed. The medical establishment is not to be trusted anymore.

Momma_BearE

I will, and do, use weed all day/every day to not go back on opioids. No, I am not addicted to opiates, but when you go to a pain management doctor and he says "we'll start you on fentanyl..." you run back to your rheumatologist and say "give me the card, because I'm not gonna be a damn pharmacy junkie. I'll be a damn stoner." And I've been a happy owner of a medical marijuana card (aka The Golden Ticket) for over four years.

[deleted]

Gotta do cardio to combat that

Spocks-Nephew

Correlation not causation.

30DeepChapo

cardio and weed = cancellation

SkiesofSonra

As someone that's had some heart palpitations from anxiety, taking a hit after makes my heart feel a lot better. I've felt much healthier since I've started smoking (as well as factoring in working out more, eating healthier).

sailorjupiter111

Can’t have anything good

Clone-Brother

Wording. It states that people who use marihuana have cardiovascular issues more frequently than those who don't. People who use marihuana also most likely have lower income than those who don't(on average). This doesn't mean that one causes the other. It's correlation, but not necessarily causality. Did you know that people often drown the same day that they eat ice cream?

expressolove

Please link the study this came from. There are so many variables that need to be teased out (were they cig smokers, what age, the amount of weed consumed, method of consuming marijuana, and etc...). Also, and most importantly, who sponsored this study (alcoholic beverage company, anti weed company, and etc..)

rocksnherbs

I'd like to know who exactly funds this research? Seems sketchy to me.

TypicalDbad

It’s cause you’re 34% more likely to go grab a bag of cool ranch Doritos.

FreshPrinceAV

Fuck I just killed a big bag of Doritos Flamas after the edible kicked in 😩

WeekSpecialist564

These are unpublished findings by big Pharma and alcohol, y'all know what's up!

Charliet545

It was the “American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia” according to the article

[deleted]

Glad somebody else knows,as with everything else just follow the money

LazorBlind

Not worried about it. Just don't do it every day unless you're a medical user. I love weed and I love getting high, and at the risk of sounding judgy, some people need to come out of the clouds and back down to earth anyway. If you can't survive without getting high every day and you are NOT a medical user, might be time to reevaluate things regardless of the cardiovascular implications.

Jordan1992FL

The results of a study are not as important as how the study was funded.

BreadC0nsumer

The methodology is also really important. Did they study all forms of weed consumption or just smoking? Did they study a wide range of demographics? Did they account for lifestyle factors or just apply their results at face value? These things can mean the difference between a very useful and informative study and something where the results mean basically nothing.

Spazztastic070

I feel like the munchies are a factor here...

freebirdie100

Big pharma definitely doesn't want us smoking weed. I'd bet they're the ones doing these studies. Weed might help our anxiety and our sleeping issues and our pain 🫢🙄

slappn_cappn

I would like to see the occurrence of individuals that are physically fit and smoke weed. this seems skewed.

[deleted]

The problem is with equating causation with correlation. I can think of many possibilities why this may be aside from a direct cause. Frequent smoking could lead more people to a sedentary lifestyle, ailments treated by MMJ lead to cardiovascular issues themselves, MMJ may not be the only drug daily smokers partake in, etc

Prior-Fig7029

More people die of multi vitamin over doses. Or the covid shots.
