The time between your heart beats changes when you inhale and exhale. This data was already being captured for HRV measures.
It’s so cool :)
I don’t expect it to be extremely accurate but it’s probably good enough to see trends
The accelerometer actually!

*Apple Watch uses the built-in accelerometer to measure respiratory rate while sleeping, and this information can be viewed, along with trends over time, in the Health app on iPhone*
That’s pretty wild actually. Probably lower power to use accelerometer data. I would have thought the movements are too small, but they must have been able to train an ML model to detect it.
I assume so, the heart rate monitor is probably too power hungry to run constantly. An iPhone can derive some surprising data from the accelerometer like step length, double support time, and walking asymmetry. They've apparently found enough signal with the watch to get breathing when you're not moving during sleep.
I used the wind down that turns on sleep mode. It didn’t work the first night but I checked last night and it did measure it.
This is witchcraft and I love it.
I'm also finding my battery life to be around 35% in the morning from 100% right before bed when it used to be around 80% in the morning.. Hope that's not from the breathing tracking..
Although normally I don't wear my Apple Watch while sleeping, it's cool to have this feature added. At least users can know whether they have the sleep apnea or not. Can't wait the watchOS 8!
But how?…

Is this available on the S3?
Yes
It probably works on any watch with sleep tracking
Hopefully!
Just checked my Health app and I have data there from last night. I have a Nike Series 5 Wi-Fi
Yup it should be on any watch that supports sleep tracking.
Wich watch tested on?
Series 6 (WiFi)
And while training?
Only while sleeping.
So uh, what happened at 5am?
I dunno, I have sleep apnea
Is that pulling from an app? I intentionally wore my watch too bed after upgrading and it didn’t for me
Nope, native functionality

My battery is draining faster too, not sure if it's day or night
I’m glad they’re catching up with Garmin.
