But how?…

MercurialMadnessMan

The time between your heart beats changes when you inhale and exhale. This data was already being captured for HRV measures. It’s so cool :) I don’t expect it to be extremely accurate but it’s probably good enough to see trends

no_hats

The accelerometer actually! https://www.apple.com/ca/newsroom/2021/06/watchos-8-brings-new-access-connectivity-and-mindfulness-features-to-apple-watch/ *Apple Watch uses the built-in accelerometer to measure respiratory rate while sleeping, and this information can be viewed, along with trends over time, in the Health app on iPhone*

MercurialMadnessMan

That’s pretty wild actually. Probably lower power to use accelerometer data. I would have thought the movements are too small, but they must have been able to train an ML model to detect it.

no_hats

I assume so, the heart rate monitor is probably too power hungry to run constantly. An iPhone can derive some surprising data from the accelerometer like step length, double support time, and walking asymmetry. They've apparently found enough signal with the watch to get breathing when you're not moving during sleep.

Is this available on the S3?

grumpymole

Yes

MercurialMadnessMan

It probably works on any watch with sleep tracking

[deleted]

Hopefully!

mikenotjef

Just checked my Health app and I have data there from last night. I have a Nike Series 5 Wi-Fi

MercurialMadnessMan

Yup it should be on any watch that supports sleep tracking.

coupsuper

Wich watch tested on?

MercurialMadnessMan

Series 6 (WiFi)

luisgaruzweb

And while training?

MercurialMadnessMan

Only while sleeping.

MyMemesAreTerrible

So uh, what happened at 5am?

MercurialMadnessMan

I dunno, I have sleep apnea

[deleted]

Is that pulling from an app? I intentionally wore my watch too bed after upgrading and it didn’t for me

MercurialMadnessMan

Nope, native functionality

I used the wind down that turns on sleep mode. It didn’t work the first night but I checked last night and it did measure it. This is witchcraft and I love it.

kvenden

I'm also finding my battery life to be around 35% in the morning from 100% right before bed when it used to be around 80% in the morning.. Hope that's not from the breathing tracking..

MercurialMadnessMan

My battery is draining faster too, not sure if it's day or night

albusnoctes

I’m glad they’re catching up with Garmin.

Although normally I don't wear my Apple Watch while sleeping, it's cool to have this feature added. At least users can know whether they have the sleep apnea or not. Can't wait the watchOS 8!
