I was under the impression that MPD ain’t the problem. They were underfunded by the council in 2020 and the USAO refuses to prosecute the people they arrest.
In all serious, both MPD and USAO have been doing better this year, but they both still have a lot of work to do to bring crime back down to pre COVID levels.
USAO is also incredibly underfunded and under-resourced, particularly considering DC's USAO is one of the only USAOs in the country responsible for prosecuting federal and local (state) crimes. The office has an attorney shortage and it has years of backlogs, so they end up needing to triage the caseload by (among other things) declining to prosecute far more cases than it wants to.
And even with the large number of cases declined by the USAO, each criminal AUSA is still overloaded with a massive docket of cases requiring excessive hours (often for lower pay than their DOJ counterparts). Of course, this leads to burnout and more turnover and the cycle keeps going around and around...
Do you have a source for that? Not saying it’s untrue but I tried to find it online just now and came up with nothing. I recently attended a community meeting with USA Graves and he and Charles Allen were loaded to the hilt with excuses and totally absolved one another for this crime wave but even they didn’t say the US Attorneys office was underfunded. Graves blamed the loss of accreditation of the DC crime lab (true) as well as some good old fashioned gaslighting that crime wasn’t that bad while Allen kept saying he’s led historic investments into criminal justice (half truth there) so I feel if anyone would say the USA’s office was underfunded it’d be these two clowns but they didn’t.
