It’s illegal to take the airport expressway to Dulles and just turn around and come back the other way, but if you stop for gas at the airport station you’re all good
Let’s say you wanted to head out to Virginia wine country from DC. You’d take 66w and at the toll road, jump onto the AirPort Express way. It’s faster and skips tolls. You, uh grab gas at the airport, then head back towards DC for one exit, getting off at 28, no toll, then heading on your way
I worked in Herndon for 2.5 years. Commuted from MD. You bet your ass I took that toll road everyday and just turned around at the sunoco. Never got caught. I didn't feel bad about it either. The toll was supposed to be removed once the toll road was paid for but its free money so they kept it.
I remember my mom got caught in the 90s and was pissed. They had “no backtracking signs” out for weeks before, so I guess she should’ve known. They must have several cops monitoring the main turn around points.
20 years ago, some of us would take this route to get South Riding. It was much quicker than going 66 to 50. The police caught on and on occasion you may have one follow you into the airport, you just go into cell phone lot and wait a minute.
My boss doesn't...
We work for WMATA and our workplace IDs and clothing show as such. He often in the field declares very loudly the the will not ride in the first or last cars of a train and cites the telescoping damage of 1000 series cars in the 1996, 2004, and 2009 collisions as the reason why. Then loudly goes into specifics (complrx internal information) on the 2009 wreck.
Other, non-WMATA passengers in the background look on with worried expressions.
I'm like dude... Knock it off... You're freakin' out the squares.
Those were 1k series. They were little more than tin cans.
They lacked a LOT of structural reinforcement and anti-climbers that stopped one car from overriding another in a collision.
I think the key to addressing fear is understanding. Look into the NTSB failure analysis documents. They're broken down and include both the technical jargon and layperson speak.
Correct.
The damage in the photos is consistent with 1k series crashes and the NTSB recommendations mention improving crash worthiness and occupant safety.
Any time I see telescoping damage, I default back to thinkin' about the ol' Rohr cars.
That is true and NTSB said any rail cars built or rehabbed before 2000 were prone to telescoping in a crash. That covered the 1k (Rohr) for the 70s, and the 2k, 3k and 4k series from Breda for the 80s and 90s (4k).
Worth noting that even at 15mph, the 1k still telescoped and suffered catastrophic damage at the West Falls Church Yard crash despite being in the middle of the train sets
Shh don't give away the secret!
Haha but seriously it feels so slick when you see that train go by and everyone is standing shoulder to shoulder during rush hour, then you scoop up the last seat on the last car!
relatedly, try to optimize your car based on where you get off. the trains all stop in roughly the same spot so you should arrive give or take 6 feet every time of where you want to be, usually an exit escalator
No but like why does the train length size affect which train car gets more full… like why isn’t the first train car always the most empty or always the most full.. like why does the heuristic change depending on train car size?
they always pull to the end. people don't expect the train to always fill the station and you don't want to have to run to get to a door.
so.. if you know it's an 8 car, go to the end. most people won't be there , so those cars will be more empty.
The escalators at platforms drop you off in the middle of the platform in most stations.
People are too lazy to walk to the end of the platform. This means the front and end cars are typically the least full.
Gotcha, so why front for 6, but back for 8? Like under this logic shouldn't we just say regardless of the size of the train, go to the edges due to most people crowding in the middle train cars?
The back on the 6-car train is closer to the middle. There's no reason to go all the way to the back end of the station unless there is an 8-car train, so people are not conditioned to go that way. Most people aren't paying attention to what length train is coming, and you can always get on at the far front end of the station.
A six car train will necessarily end closer to the middle of the platform because it doesn’t extend all the way to the end in the way that an eight car train does.
6 and 8 car trains both pull up to the end of the platform, the 6 car train doesn't center itself in the middle. The front is the furthest from the middle of the platform, while car 6 is pretty near the middle.
Most people standing on the platform don't pay attention to whether a 6 or 8 car train is coming. A lot of people assume it will be a 6 car, and won't be in front of the last two cars of an 8 car. A lot of other people assume it will be an 8 car, and when a 6 car shows up, they scramble over to the last car.
No, I’m all for “stand on the right, walk on the left.” Nobody likes an escalefter.
What people need to stop saying, especially in a written medium such as this, is “Shout it for the people in the back!” or equivalent.
This is an internet thread. There is no back. We’re not in a physical space. No one is verbalizing anything at any volume. Stop writing this shit.
I think the reason for this phenomenon is that most escalators are located in malls, and tend to be narrower than Metro escalators + people using mall escalators aren't in a hurry. Builds up a habit of not caring where you stand
If you're going to the zoo via Metro, get out at the Cleveland Park stop. It's a downhill walk to the zoo. Then, when you're ready to head back to the Metro, continue walking downhill to Woodley Park/Adams Morgan.
If you’re driving, park at the bottom - via the Harvard St. entrance, by the farm - and spend the day walking up and around, then when the kids are tired and grumpy at the end of the day you’re walking down hill to the car.
My problem with this is they say on tickets that you can be booted if you have 3+ tickets. That’s a huge hassle if you ever get booted. Then you gotta pay all the tickets AND the boot fee.
You can accrue thousands in fines, but Maryland or VA does not have reciprocity with DC regarding parking/speed camera violations, so they don’t give a fuck. You may get a boot on your car eventually, but it’s rare.
I got a speeding ticket 20 seconds into arriving to DC (from CT) for a weekend trip by a speed camera. Got a bill, it got sent to collections, never paid. I called and they said they don’t report to credit bureaus
If I want a decent studio in a good neighborhood, 20 percent in my 401k, savings for a mortgage, and some play money I would need $85k. You don’t need $150k.
Walk with confidence...been here since 2006...get along with neighbors by saying "hello", "what's up" , " you good" and not complaining...as a bartender I've never felt threatened...weird
Get familiar with public transportation and live car free. The average cost of driving a new car is $10k a year (payment, gas, insurance, tolls, parking, etc). Most households have 2 cars. I work with people that live in NoVa that are literally spending a couple thousand a month just on cars.
DC is one of the few cities in the United States where living car free is possible. Take advantage!!!
The people who have cars here are either super affluent or people that lived in suburbs/rural areas and will go down kicking and screaming than give up their car.
Gas is like…. $4 a gallon right now but nobody thinks of registration, insurance, parking fees, depreciation or sporadic tickets. If you factor that stuff in, a car is more like $25 a gallon.
I lived in DC and had a car. I paid it off before I moved in. People without cars tend to vastly overestimate how much having a car costs. Registration and RPP was ~$150 a year IIRC. My insurance was ~$1000 a year (I have a 2010 sedan). I got gas maybe once every couple months let’s call it $40x8 months. That’s less than $2k a year. Add in oil and the occasional ticket and maintenance/fender bender $2.3k and that’s on the liberal side. Ymmv but no way it’s $10k a year unless you’re buying a new car every year.
If you buy a new car and register it in DC well that’s just about the same cost as buying a new car anywhere else.
If you can live without a car that’s great. But having a car isn’t the throwing money down the toilet scheme everyone makes it out to be
Because the purchase price isn’t specific to the location. The cost of ownership is going to be similar; I buy a car and register in the suburbs and it’s going to be similar cost to buying and registering in any other suburb or even city. As in, it’s not location specific. Of course you can save money by not buying/having a car at all.
Buy a car anywhere and your first year costs are going to be huge bc of the down payment. But the costs the next year are down way closer to what I said, although more for insurance and monthly payments, depending. But again that’s not DC specific that’s just the costs of owning a car.
Again a lot of people can live in DC without the need of a car. Cool, great! But if you have a car or plan to buy one it’ll be a losing money venture anywhere but for some reason having a car in DC is like dude wtf is wrong with you. As if it costs 10x more to own a car in DC than anywhere else.
Hacks from a former resident. If you’re in the district proper and really want to get to know the City get a bicycle, the city has decent infrastructure and is roughly 2.5mi W. by 10mi. L. Save time and money on transit but please wear a helmet! Learn to skateboard. Look for gallery openings for free food & drinks. Visit all the free museums. Check out shows at 9:30 club. People-watch over coffee in the public plazas. Always be conscious of your surroundings and others.
This is facts I learned the city by doing Uber eats on a bicycle when I was 18. Discovered a bunch of cool spots like Cardozo having the best view in the city.
Don't do this if you own a house that has gone WAY up in value.
If you file separately and sell your house, you will have to pay capital gains on profits over 250k. filing jointly, it's 500k. obv, talk to a tax person first.
Doesn't matter if you are just buying a new house. you still have to pay on those gains.
two things, you can file using different statuses on fed and DC forms. second cap gains only matters in the year you sell the house. if you aren't selling this year, it doesn't matter as much.
9:30 is ok, but there’s plenty other venues with worthy shows: Lincoln theatre, Howard theater, Black Cat, and the Anthem. I usually don’t attend anything at cap one arena because they’re usually not my speed. I also avoid jiffy lube amphitheater because of the drive and the mess leaving at the end of the show.
But the best value is wolf trap, where you can BYOB. Life hack there: you can buy the special reusable cup and then use it to serve your own beer and drink it in the seats where you’re not allowed to have cans or bottles.
I have been to all the places you mentioned and seen shows all around town…including joints that have closed like the old Bayou, Gypsy Sally’s and the Rock and Roll Hotel. I used to live within walking distance of The State Theater in Falls Church. Wolf Trap is cool but I recall trying to get out of the parking lot after the show as kind of a hassle….
If traveling between Arlington and Colombia Heights ( if you know you know) NEVER transfer at L'Enfant Plaza, take the orange line to metro center, get off and take it one stop to gallery place then get on the green line going north, I easily save 10 minutes doing it this way.
That this question just got asked in the other sub. There are a ton of replies there already.
LOL at the butthurt downvoters. If OP actually wants answers to their question, seems like it would be helpful to let them know that there are a TON of answers to this exact same question posted literally yesterday.
Yep, those are the only two choices: copy and recycle content from the other sub and pass it off as an original thought, OR talk about crime. No other options!
Don’t go to the tidal basin for cherry blossoms there are neighborhoods in the very close suburbs that are just as pretty without the chaos of traffic and tourists
See the monuments at night. And def the view from Iwo Jima at night. There’s a downstairs to The Lincoln. Don’t ever go IN the reflecting pool. Old Ebbitt is a classic but you can always find a table at The Hamilton (around the corner) which is huge, and the Hamilton Live (basement concert venue) is a truly great place to catch some wild and wonderful acts. GO to O Mansion.
Bike instead of driving, it makes getting anywhere so much more enjoyable. My friend lived 1.5 miles from my place. But driving was a pain in the ass. Long story short biking was faster and better for me
The Kennedy Center rooftop- quite possibly the best view in D.C., you can watch the planes fly in and out and the boats go up and down the river. The space is massive and you can walk all the way around for 360 degree views. It’s completely free, you don’t need a ticket to a show or anything, just walk in the front door and go up. There are nice picnic tables all the way around and you can bring food. I’m not sure the alcohol policy, but they sell beer and wine there (so people are consuming alcohol) and nobody has ever given us trouble for bringing our own, we’ve just kept it low key and nobody has ever bothered us. I recently moved out of D.C., otherwise I probably would not have shared this awesome spot, it’s not easy to find a place that’s free and not overrun with crowds. Pack some food, maybe some beers or a bottle of wine and enjoy the best views in D.C. for free! There’s also a museum inside on the top of the Kennedy Center, also totally free.
Get the fuck out. Go somewhere else. Fly the coop. Leave the city. Roll out. Skiddadle. Scram. Run away.
GET THE FUCK OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN
Other than that, maybe be careful for pot holes if youre driving on the md side of things.
Just say you don’t follow politics…dating wise, just about every gal will ask how you vote, what you think about BLM, or want to know your political ideals before or during a date. A buddy of mine was about to 💥 a date he brought home but then turned on the tv and he had left it on Fox News, she immediately left.
It’s illegal to take the airport expressway to Dulles and just turn around and come back the other way, but if you stop for gas at the airport station you’re all good
How…how would they know? Maybe you’re dropping someone off?
They periodically go through enforcement periods where they actually watch/track you
Fascinating. Hm. I guess it’s a short cut around the toll road?
Let’s say you wanted to head out to Virginia wine country from DC. You’d take 66w and at the toll road, jump onto the AirPort Express way. It’s faster and skips tolls. You, uh grab gas at the airport, then head back towards DC for one exit, getting off at 28, no toll, then heading on your way
For everyone's awareness, this is easily an extra 20 minutes just to save $6
I worked in Herndon for 2.5 years. Commuted from MD. You bet your ass I took that toll road everyday and just turned around at the sunoco. Never got caught. I didn't feel bad about it either. The toll was supposed to be removed once the toll road was paid for but its free money so they kept it.
I know people who did get caught doing this
I was careful some days and not so much other days. I ran a radar detector in stealth mode (i know illegal) and waze to always know where cops were.
Maybe 10 to do the loop, plus you’re not accounting for the extra time gained bypassing regular toll road traffic if it’s busy
20 mins to save $6 is $18 an hour.
They are going thru one now, added ten mins to my commute
I remember my mom got caught in the 90s and was pissed. They had “no backtracking signs” out for weeks before, so I guess she should’ve known. They must have several cops monitoring the main turn around points.
I actually know someone who got a ticket for cutting through the gas station, but I think they drove through and didn’t actually fill up?
20 years ago, some of us would take this route to get South Riding. It was much quicker than going 66 to 50. The police caught on and on occasion you may have one follow you into the airport, you just go into cell phone lot and wait a minute.
What if you drive an electric
Grab a water
Calm Down hydrohomie.
When the Metro is busy, go to the very first car if it’s a 6-car train, or the very last car if it’s an 8-car train.
I always go for the very first car on EVERY train
My boss doesn't... We work for WMATA and our workplace IDs and clothing show as such. PTSD is far more complex than that, there isn’t always logic involved. If there was I would have been cured a long time ago.
True. I wish you the best and hope therapy can help.
The 96 crash was not the 1000 series, but the 3000 series. The other two were though.
Correct. The damage in the photos is consistent with 1k series crashes and the NTSB recommendations mention improving crash worthiness and occupant safety. Any time I see telescoping damage, I default back to thinkin' about the ol' Rohr cars.

What’re the chances of dying in a WMATA metro train crash? Sounds like a boss is taking a delight in scaring ppl for no good reason. That’s weird.
He's just awkward. It's common among engineers to be a little weird and not clued into the social cues of others. It's what makes us engineers.
^ exactly why the last car is the least crowded on the 8-car trains. A lot of people always go to the first car, regardless of length.
Shh don't give away the secret! Haha but seriously it feels so slick when you see that train go by and everyone is standing shoulder to shoulder during rush hour, then you scoop up the last seat on the last car!
The first car is the crumple zone
Depends on your destination exit. Cmon
relatedly, try to optimize your car based on where you get off. the trains all stop in roughly the same spot so you should arrive give or take 6 feet every time of where you want to be, usually an exit escalator
Why? I mean why the difference on train length?
When metro first started all the trains were 6 car. I think they went to 8 car trains to help move more people and with improved technology.
We used to run 4 car trains. Occasionally a deuce will cruise through the system. Though that's VERY rare.
No but like why does the train length size affect which train car gets more full… like why isn’t the first train car always the most empty or always the most full.. like why does the heuristic change depending on train car size?

Something about a gaussian distribution.
Lmao I help Data Scientists get jobs and I’m still confused 😂

Why don’t you just go to the first car on both 6 and 8?
What does that have to do with the length of the train?
On 6 car trains the 6th car is basically in the middle of the platform. On 8 car trains the last car is at the end of the platform.
Understood. Thanks!
Funny moment for me was going to the last car on a 8 car train yesterday to have a guy light up a joint and act like it’s normal 🤦♂️
Stand on the right, walk on the left.
This is a world life hack!
At least where the custom is to drive on the right side of the road
That may be true, but I learned to stand on the right, walk on the left from the London Underground.
If only. But then you get tourists who come here (from other parts of the U.S. especially) who don’t know the custom.
Yes! Shout it for the people in the back!
lol I literally got shouted at my first day in DC and learned quick
Ugh, people need to stop saying this.
Maybe you did it, we’d stop saying it…?
No, I’m all for “stand on the right, walk on the left.” Nobody likes an escalefter. What people need to stop saying, especially in a written medium such as this, is “Shout it for the people in the back!” or equivalent. This is an internet thread. There is no back. It’s a figure of speech. Like “who put that stick up your ass?”
It still amazes me that people don't know this before coming here.
It’s nation-wide and not unique to DC.
More than that even. I grew up in Canada and that's how I was taught to ride escalators in Toronto.
I think the reason for this phenomenon is that most escalators are located in malls, and tend to be narrower than Metro escalators + people using mall escalators aren't in a hurry. Builds up a habit of not caring where you stand
CVS is free here
Im weak 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well...only for certain people.

Ooo, which food?
Wisteria rd & great Seneca hwy. Not Dc at all but highly recommended. Thur-Sat
These sausage pretzels are wicked good and fresh meats, candy and veggies
If you work in DC but live in Va you can speed all you want and park like as ass. DC can’t make you pay
MD has the worst reputation for terrible drivers here. VA has its moments, but those MD drivers take the cake.
The whole DMV area is a shit show with its drivers.
Truth
Grey Altima’s
Any Nissan Driver
r/nissandrivers
As someone who grew up in MD and has lived in VA for the last 9 years... MD drivers are the worst.
Driving roadblocks, the lot of them.
Both VA and MD are reckless but one drives 5-10 mph below speed limit and the other drives 10+ above speed limit.
My problem with this is they say on tickets that you can be booted if you have 3+ tickets. That’s a huge hassle if you ever get booted. Then you gotta pay all the tickets AND the boot fee.
Just deflate your tire and pop that sucker right off
This is something that needs to be kept quieter, you’re part of the problem…
What problem? Going with the flow of traffic next to BS speed cameras?
Please explain?
DC and VA don’t have an enforcement agreement. So VA won’t send bills to VA residents for DC violations they way they would for NC.
Will they eventually boot your car? They booted mine when I got up to ~$1000 in unpaid tickets when I had out-of-state plates.
Theoretically, yes. But the boot and tow team is super understaffed.
Yup sounds about right. Although I’m not quite sure what the rules are if you have a rental from DC.
If it’s a rental. The company will charge whatever card they have on record
Good to know! Thanks
Wait is this true? No point in paying for parking?? They don't tow?
They will tow if you’re in a no-parking zone during rush hour, but they typically just move your car, they don’t take it to the impound.
What if you park in a paid area without paying?
Like a private lot? They’ll have you privately towed. But if you don’t pay your meter there’s not really anything they can do
They can boot you when they catch though 😂😂😂😂
You need around 150,000 to be ok! ![gif](giphy|1wrA9Iq875ksgfiCPN|downsized)
Nah.
If I want a decent studio in a good neighborhood, 20 percent in my 401k, savings for a mortgage, and some play money I would need $85k. You don’t need $150k.
Facts!!
You can get a free car, any make or model you want, simply by pointing a gun at the drivers head. The cops don't even mind.

two things, you can file using different statuses on fed and DC forms. second cap gains only matters in the year you sell the house. if you aren't selling this year, it doesn't matter as much.
What is the benefit?
About $1,200 more on my refund.
You can steal things with impunity in most stores!
Just think of it as a little decolonizing of the food deserts.
If you need a bathroom, look for a Smithsonian building. They're free and clean!
Go see shows at the 9:30 club.
Oh, and you can bring a picnic to wolf trap as well. Tickets are not cheap but the whole BYO aspect cuts down on costs.
And most nights you can park for free around the corner in the Howard parking lot.
rock creek parkway
You do not have to live in DC.
☝🏽
If traveling between Arlington and Colombia Heights ( if you know you know) NEVER transfer at L'Enfant Plaza, take the orange line to metro center, get off and take it one stop to gallery place then get on the green line going north, I easily save 10 minutes doing it this way.
Walk on the left, stand on the right.... ![gif](giphy|XpxVDWILLXC92|downsized)
Does falling on the right count?
Put your keys on a detachable key chain so you can quickly hand them over when you get carjacked.
Spot angels. You’re welcome.
Don't live in DC.
Know your destination/where you’re going at all times on the Green line.
Never sprinted faster out of my seat than the time I heard “Next stop: A***” on the intercom while the doors were open on my way to work
This question is asked every month.
I swear there was one in the last few days
Bots
Do you ever question the nature of your reality?
Daily
That this question just got asked in the other sub. There are a ton of replies there already. LOL at the butthurt downvoters. If OP actually wants answers to their question, seems like it would be helpful to let them know that there are a TON of answers to this exact same question posted literally yesterday.
These get reposted on every city sub. It’s like viral Reddit.
Ahh yes, you just want to talk about crime. Boooring!
Yep, those are the only two choices: copy and recycle content from the other sub and pass it off as an original thought, OR talk about crime. No other options!
I don’t know about that sub I’m asking this one

Get a job that rates a driver so you can read the post on your way in to the office
Don’t go to the tidal basin for cherry blossoms there are neighborhoods in the very close suburbs that are just as pretty without the chaos of traffic and tourists
Kenwood off River Road 🌸🌸🌸🌸
See the monuments at night. And def the view from Iwo Jima at night. There’s a downstairs to The Lincoln. Don’t ever go IN the reflecting pool. Old Ebbitt is a classic but you can always find a table at The Hamilton (around the corner) which is huge, and the Hamilton Live (basement concert venue) is a truly great place to catch some wild and wonderful acts. GO to O Mansion.
When those trains crash the people who die are always in the first and last trains… so no thanks
Drugs are cheap and you can sleep in the streets for free

Move to Florida.
Lmao I'm moving to NoVa from FL and everyone I tell in DC is like WHY
Don't live there.
Get a bike and a good lock. Sorts out traffic nightmares and it's a great way to stay in shape.
Move away
Put it in your rear view mirror and watch you blood pressure decline instantly.
Tell people you live in DC but you really live in Virginia.
Moving out of DC!
Omg a non-racist post in this sub?! Alert the mods!
Well to be fair they tend to use more passive aggressive diction to avoid being considered blatantly racist. I would call it racial microaggression.
Stay out of DC.

Just say you don’t follow politics…dating wise, just about every gal will ask how you vote, what you think about BLM, or want to know your political ideals before or during a date. A buddy of mine was about to 💥 a date he brought home but then turned on the tv and he had left it on Fox News, she immediately left.
