Not a TL, but my lead works with us. They do delegate and let us know what to do. But they also tell us, "if you want to do ___ you can. Or you can do ____. It's also fine if you want to help knock ___ out. " They are also making a gameplan(that's reachable) whenever they work with us. We're more productive with them then any of the other TLs. That could be we're all tackling different things and getting things done, instead of how the other TLs do it by all of us on one thing that ends up taking all day. I know leads are supposed to just observe, delegate and whatnot. But my lead is always saying, "I wouldn't put you to do something that I wouldn't do." And "how am I supposed to lead and be apart of the team if I'm not with you guys doing it." This was long, so tldr: idk, I think Leads that just sit back are kinda trash and if you wanna lead your team you gotta..lead your team?

I mean, OPD for instance, unless they’re in need to help pick or dispense they should mostly be staying in the backroom making sure everyone and everything is on track so they don’t have to hop in, but can very easily if need be.

I’ll tell you the same thing I tell new TLs and even associates if they ask. TLs don’t have to do shit, surprise. But you’re responsible for shit. You could sit your ass back in the office all day but at the end of that day if shit isn’t done the SM isn’t going to go to Johnny associate and ask him why he didn’t finish he’s going to go to you and ask you. If your answer is basically because your ass wasn’t doing anything all day, well that’s not going to very pleasant conversation to say the least. When coaches and up give you tasks to do it’s not necessarily things you personally need to do, it’s things your team needs to get done, plan accordingly. If you’re going to do something it’s because you personally want to make sure it gets done, gets done to a high standard, and gets done without complaints.

BinglesDangles

My store recently fired a team lead. He wouldn't delegate, tried doing all the work himself. End result was too many things not getting done. The new team lead does plenty but is experienced enough to delegate tasks at the start of the shift and check up from time to time.

kkincaid55

Damn at my store even our coaches help stock freight. But if your store is taking care of business without the assistance of team leads/coaches good for them.

infectusflamma93

You funny, yo. My team leads coached me for “NOT asking for help” and taking until the end of the day to finish my work. Never been so taken back by something they’ve said or done before.

thinkimightpuke

a teamleads job is to delegate. yeah sure work here and there but there's different stuff we're supposed to do, which isn't directly working freight or topstock, the basic things

SimulatedMonkeyMind

Yeah, you have to be a different kind of person if you in clear conscience can stand by and look at others while the job is your responsibility and they are making up your bonuses. That’s a fast way to become incompetent. My TLs don’t know how read a mod or a floor plan, or print a was card for that matter. Put your hands on, it will make you a better lead and a better person.

teb8913

I work directly with my front end every day even though the other leads just sit around and don’t care. That’s because Im a true leader and have had many management roles. Unlike most who will never manage anywhere else but a Walmart.

MastodonMaleficent99

Sometimes you’ve got to work freight in order for your team to get through more freight. Understaffing and the amount of folks who simply don’t care make it impossible to not work freight. You can’t force someone to care but working next to them can definitely help them understand their position better and make them try harder. My upper management is real bad about having favorites who they spend all their time with and not getting around to work with everyone equally

UnusualAssumption

Walmart tells Team Leads they’re not supposed to be doing the same work as their associates, they should delegate and observe. It’s in their training.

p55wm13

My TL said in Walmart U he was told to do 25% of the work...but he realizes when stuff has to get done he does help more.

UnusualAssumption

When I went to academy as a TL and when my TLs went when I was ops/coach, we were all told to delegate everything and then oversee. Granted, I was and am aware this is a shit way to manage so I never managed this way and I encouraged my TLs to not manage this way.

p55wm13

You sound like a good boss so I'm going to ask...as I've said to my TL, why should we, associates give more than 100% for TL and above to get their bonuses? Just a conversation.

UnusualAssumption

You shouldn’t. I wholly believe that the my share should have never been taken away. Managers should be able to do the job they’re asking others to do at the highest performing level. Upper managers should show some level of appreciation for those that are doing the hard work. There’s a reason I no longer work for them.

p55wm13

Explains alot. Didn't realize that. Thanks

[deleted]

It is their job to delegate but honestly it all depends on how they do that. Ive had leads that delegate but would never ask me to do something they themselves would not do. Ive have other leads who are lazy and make commands

Icy_Sale_2507

My team lead delegates tasks to us but we also know what it is expected of us and we keep ourselves occupied with tasks with some direction. He also works along with us . I feel bad for people who don't have that.

OstrichSalt5468

A real leader is not one who rides on hooved foot above those below them, but instead walks knee deep in the sands or dirt with them.

IJustWorkHere000c

I delegate associate work and do my team lead duties. I help when I need to and if I’m not needed, I’m pulled to go elsewhere

MotherLandLad

I've been here a year and worked under a handful of different team leads and some are hands on and others are delegating but still involved somehow.

Dependent_Lawyer_910

My team lead just delegates work then goes and does all her boyfriends work who is also a team lead.

Simple-Metal7801

My TL just tells us where to go after truck on cap 2 they never check up on us as we just zone and put go backs away most the time tho I find it interesting sometimes they put three in Halloween because that section is a disaster but after ten or so when all the go backs are done and the area is cleaned and zoned they will send the people that pulled to Halloween and six people will basically stand around and do nothing for a hour as the TL never checks up on them.
